Brings back good memory's of all the rides and the work I did on that loco its hard to believe that Gary Mc Donald has been dead 11 years and West Coast Railway has been gone nearly 10 years thanks Trevor for sharing this
feel that mate, as this brings back memories! still now! I used to clean, oil, and chem the thing in Wbool as a kid! and then, we all went upto the royal for lunch*** as my dad was a truck driver*** and used to deliver alcohol* and that was a pub he delivered to every week* and got to know the publican* so therefore**** as Westcoast Railway was bringing in the economy for WBool* The Pub owner would give most of us a free lunch** ;) some had to pay, but that is because they didnt know the scheme what was happening, The good old Royal! Chips n Gravey or a roast lamb every saturday
thanks for the cab ride, much appreciated. i note differences of opinion amongst some of the comments. i suspect you are all right. i've observed some of the arguments on northern hemisphere sites mostly to do with yanks observing pommy driving techniques and vice versa. thirty five years ago i could have asked my dad who fired everything in victoria in the forties and drove everything except the h and the s's, but he's not around anymore. one of the contributing factors was an illness often suffered by enginemen and firemen. all that coal. do i mean black lung? no all that heat and hard work generates a big thirst for beer. my favourite comment goes to pacnat007. thanks for a special insight. my dad, in spite of the hard work, thought it was a privilege to operate most of the engines. he disliked the e's.
+Ben De Lathouwer it is a diesel MU control stand, they would often double head with a diesel when loads required that, but would still only require one crew.
You sir however do. Most Yank locos are operated with the throttle tho I believe there are a few end of steam era models driven using valve cut off. I think it probably works better with a consistent load & easy grade.
My dad is there! RIP Vic
so excited that today this journey is to be recreated for the first time in 14 years!
Me too. I'm heading for southern Cross now...

They were good trips.

Thanks!
love the vid mate!!! keep it up!
Cheers, I'm trying!
It looked as though the fireman had an easy time?
+oldigger its an oil burner , he just has to turn taps
+chopperking1122 your right he only needs to operate oil and half the valve system and what not.
The joys of an oil burner!
Quick question for what are the brown handels?( the diesel loco styled ones )
+Ben De Lathouwer it is a diesel MU control stand, they would often double head with a diesel when loads required that, but would still only require one crew.
steamfreak3450 - Steam trains around the world thank you for the info ! Didn't know steam loco's can work in multiple with a diesel
Ben De Lathouwer it was modfied to do so
The driver on the outward leg to Warrnambool seems to be using an awful lot of regulator.
+LMatters1 That's how they ought to be driven, full regulator and set cutoff to suit speed
+Match2100 Absolute rubbish
Why?
Match2100 and then to reduce steamflow they will use the reverser. So they use less fuel
You sir however do.

Am I able to use the footage for a documentary i"m making on R711's return to Warrnambool?

Sadly the "west" scenery is as boring as all get out,but seeing the controls on the trip was great, and that whistle....brilliant.
Yep, but good for letting the big Hudson stretch her legs!
the driver seems prtetty layed back
Yep they were pretty relaxed!
