Thanks for sharing- beautiful and atmospheric, the Cape mountains are stunning backdrops.
Thanks you! Yes it is in a stunning part of the world.
Truly beautiful light. What great quality as well Thanks for posting this. :-)
Thanks! That was an amazing trip
I was on this tour so I've enjoyed this film very much. The morning light was superb, what a shame it didn't continue through the day.
Those morning shots were incredible!
Fabulous ! Oh Man ! Can that Garratt roar. Thats the loudest exhaust I have ever heard !.
Might've benefited from compound expansion, to ameliorate the lousy thermal efficiency of recip steam. Much energy lost there.
Sounded incredible! I'll remember that sounds always...
Great footage Trevor, that soundtrack is lovely!
That GO certainly plays the music!
Beautiful video & first class sound track. Articulated loco.
Incredible!
Top video steamfreak
Thank you!
Hi Trevor ! Fantastic. Ddi you ever get any video on the pietermaritzburg to Donnybrook Line or the PMB to Greytown Line? Some real hard work there.
I did a video on the PMB to Albert Falls line but sadly never got to Donnybrook.
My maternal Grandfather used to drive these in NSW AUSTRALIA, this old girl has some serious steam leaks.
Yes the fitters could do a bit of work on that one!
Once did Joburgh to Wankie on a coal train the last two were coaches
Wow that would have been a great journey.
Never could understand why no Garratts were tried on the W side of the "pond." Seems to me that a big 300 psi Garratt with compound expansion would have many advantages over Mallets. Beyer-Peacock licensing fees?
Yeah I'm not sure. I agree they could have made amazing heavy haulers!
There are so many steam leaks on that loco that shouldn't be there. Obviously the fitters didn't tend to all the necessary areas
Indeed! But it looks good in the cold morning air!
That locomotive leaked badly. That I think made it perform as badly as it leaked.
Yes it certainly shrouded itself in steam. It seemed to perform well though.
How steep is the maximum gradient on Houhoek pass?
1 in 30 I believe
i think that garratt whas very old
1954 by Henschel, using cast steel frames from the USA.
Quite young for a steam loco!
