  • Film Class I: How the 7 Basic Plots Make Up Every Story Ever Told in Human History | The 7 Basic Plots
    #filmclass #podcast #7basicplots
Welcome or welcome back to my channel! Today I just wanted to sit down and have an in-depth discussion solely dedicated to the fundamentals of storytelling. How I analyze, how I review, and how I make my predictions. Aside from just trying really hard to make quality content that provides value, I've legitimately simply studied a lot into the art and history of storytelling in general, having watched thousands of movies and shows, and done a whole host of reading over the years. The "Shapes of Stories" thesis done by Kurt Vonnegut, which led to Christopher Booker's book "The 7 Basic Plots" are probably some of the two greatest influences on my ability to interpret and analyze any given story, therefore, most of this podcast length discussion is dedicated to that. I hope this video is interesting and engaging, and I might wanna consider this an "episode 0" or class "00" to an actual film class series that might be fun to do on this channel!

It looks interesting, it will be interesting to know what will be in future videos, so we will wait) And ... I love good stories, the ones that make you forget that all this is just a show and you are interested in what will happen next with these characters, so I have a question for you - How do you like the story in the Star Wars sequels and prequels (the originals are also if you can), I am interested in your opinion because I want to understand how you think, if you do not mind . I hope you will notice the comment , but now I will just say good luck in your work)

hmmm.. it's hard to do a good job at explaining in only a limited number of words here in a comment. I love Star Wars, my childhood was star wars and harry potter so im very passionate about Star Wars lmfao. If you know or watch the youtube channel "Star Wars Theory", I share many of the same thoughts and opinions with him. I personally love and appreciate the prequels. The idea of prequels in film practically did not exist before George Lucas did it, and he thought of making prequels back during the original trilogy. Lucas himself said the original trilogy films were only 50% of his vision, because he was limited by the technology of the time. He earned his money from the original trilogy, with this he created Industrial Light & Magic, ILM, which pioneered filmmaking and transcended what was previously thought possible right from the beginning. Having all that money now from the original trilogy, and his own vfx company, and the technology available now, he could create stories he wanted now, with no business people or corporate getting in the way. This is why I love and appreciate the prequels even as an adult, not just from nostalgia as a child. The prequels were pure Lucas, exactly what he wanted to create, he wished for a space opera, shedding new light and expanding upon the greatest archetypal mythological story of our time. Sure, the script/dialogue is mediocre, corny, cringy at times, but I look past that because im too busy appreciating everything else. People think Jar Jar sucks and only exists for kids? Star Wars was made for 10 year olds, it just happened to appeal to adults too. Lucas said that himself. I look at Jar Jar as being the first fully CGI main character to exist in film history. Some can argue the knight in "The Young Sherlock Holmes" is the first fully CGI character, but that was also done by ILM. Every star wars movie, the original and prequel trilogies pushed the envelope and lead the way in visual effects and film making possibilities. We got to see the clone wars on a grand scale, something the movies only ever referenced before. George Lucas wished he could have told the story of the clone wars first, or earlier, but he couldn't, because the technology at that time didn't make his vision possible, wouldn't have done it a justice. The pod race sequence in TPM is one of the greatest visual effects and editing achievements ever in film, it was mind blowing and revolutionary. Seeing coruscant as a massive lively city, that was never possible before until then, that's why you never saw massive cities in the original trilogy, you only ever saw Cloud City from a far distance, and then everything else was indoor sets. The chase scene in attack of the clones was something Lucas loved he could finally do. Sure, a lot was blue screen or green screen, but they were also doing things that were never done before at the same time. And people don't realize just how much of the films were practical, either miniature models or full scale sets. I also just think the prequels had so much heart and emotion. I still get goosebumps watching the prequels. You have Liam Neeson, Samuel L Jackson, Ewan McGregor, Christopher Lee, Natalie Portman. Already legendary and now legendary actors. You had locations like Coruscant, Kamino, Geonosis, Naboo, Tatooine, etc. You had antagonists like Darth Maul, which carried into the animated series, you had Qui Gon, who can have so many stories still told about him, we have younger grand master Yoda. The origin story of Boba Fett, AND his father Jango, the origin of the clone army and Kamino, the start of the clone wars, lore on the death star, the rule of 2 and the sith actually being a thing, you had pod races, epic flying vehicle chases, grand space battles, clone vs droid battles, the best lightsaber combat we've ever seen, we have the Obi Wan vs Anakin battle at the end, the death of Anakin and the birth of Darth Vader. I don't enjoy the sequels at all. The fact George Lucas had a template for the sequels, he planned on creating a sequel trilogy before selling to Disney. He was under the assumption Disney would use his scripts and outline he had for his own sequels when he sold, and they didn't do that, which betrays George Lucas and leaves a sour taste in many Star Wars fans mouths. I see George Lucas as the God of the Star Wars universe, anything he approved or said or created is canon to me, anything else is not canon to me. He signed off on and had to approve of all Legends material, so to me it is canon. He created the animated series with Filoni. He was on set a lot and talked with Favreau a lot for Mandalorian, so to me it gets his stamp of approval. No coincidence to me, that Filoni, who worked under Lucas as almost an apprentice, knows how to tell Star Wars stories, same with Favreau. I think Kathleen Kennedy is atrociously incompetent when it comes to handling this franchise. TFA is "good" only because its literally just a new hope, it was such a safe bet, no risk whatsoever. I just think the sequels do such an injustice to Han Solo, Leia, Luke by far. You had such an amazing character in Kylo Ren and do nothing with him. Po had potential and you do nothing with him. John Boyega was completely thrown out into the trash and his character disrespected, to the point he hates the franchise now. The sequels are forgettable at best and make absolutely no sense to me at worst. I've come to change my perspective on the sequels a little bit after listening to some of the interviews Star Wars Theory has done. But idunno, I just see nothing revolutionary filmmaking wise from the sequels, no memorable moments or characters, and don't feel any emotion from the story itself, they don't speak to me, and that's what I need a story to do, speak to me. I wish the sequels would get wiped from canon, but that's not possible. Carrie Fisher is dead, Harrison Ford wouldn't come back to reprise his role, Mark Hamill is old, they wasted a character like Kylo Ren they can't reproduce. To me its just a shame. I purposely try to forget the sequels exist, and just try to appreciate everything else even more. I hope that does a decent job of answering your question

@@JugheadsJourney ,, I personally love and appreciate the sequels,, and ,, I don't enjoy the sequels at all. ,, u mean - I personally love and appreciate the prequels ? I read the comment and can only say ,, WOW,, this is one of those times when someone else says what's in your head. I'll start a little from afar, but I watched the original films and fell in love with this universe immediately, episode 4 for me is the perfect start to a great story, a new world, races and a Mystical force-and all this gives us infinite potential for stories (Tarkin, who was in the film for a couple of minutes and died at the end seemed so alive and real that you don't often see in films, how sad).Episode 5, unlike many people, I liked it less, perhaps because of the love story and some other moments, for me episode 5 was a bridge between 4 and 6 ( I understand this is how it should be), a lot of interesting things happened in episode 5 ( getting to know Yoda, Luke I'm your Dad) that will lead to a great climax, but right now you can take cliffhanger). Episode 6 is my favorite of 6, not just because it's the culmination of a trilogy ( All scenes with Luke, Vader, and the Emperor in my heart ) but also the beginning of future stories of the Jedi Master Luke or maybe even new characters in this far far away galaxy. I soon learned about the prequels, and from the very beginning I realized-this is not the same Star Wars as before, Star Wars has become bigger, we do not watch the battles of the Rebels and the Empire, we get acquainted with the republic and what led it to the empire ( many people call politics boring but when you really try to understand what is happening, you understand - Palpatine has implemented a frighteningly realistic plan to capture vlast). We were introduced to new characters, revealed the characters of the original films and showed completely new worlds, and this is one of the reasons why I respect George Lucas - his imagination, his vision of his galaxy. I also don't want to forget about the Force - The battle against Darth Maul and the battle of Yoda and the Senate(hehe) are just beautiful. I'm a Star Wars fan and I can't help but admit the truth - ,, the script/dialogue is mediocre, corny, cringy at times,, , but I can also say ,, I look past that because im too busy appreciating everything else,, ). And there are only sequels left ... after many years of neglecting the prequels, the Sequels are coming out (episode 7) and those who didn't like the prequels are happy, THEIR Star Wars came out , with the spirit of the original films , and for me it was just a copy of the original, besides a bad copy that missed what SW did by itself. After episode 7, I wasn't in the movie theater, I didn't want to give them money for a movie I wasn't sure about , and episode 8 came out.... Luke dies, the Resistance is crushed and ... Carrie Fisher is dead... the story lines are destroyed and in the end, even anger was not there, only frustration. I'll probably skip episode 9, I don't want to call it a movie. Now I want to ask you about the Mandalorian) I will take the first step this time-season 1, although it was not expensive, it felt the soul of the original films, with a little addition of something new, it's funny that although at the beginning and at the end of the season there was a lot of action for me, the best series was the 5-series about hunting for a sniper, many would call it filler, but it had the charm of a bounty hunter. Then Season 2 came out, it was more expensive, but it was more like advertising new shows than a series about a Mandalorian and completely destroying the danger from stormtroopers by turning them into blind kittens is terrible. But I have to say that I liked it in season 2 right ) One dialogue in episode 7 (based on stormtroopers, if you watched it right away, you'll understand what I'm talking about) and a farewell in episode 8, it was emotional. Sorry if I'm bothering you, it's just very rare to find a person who understands you, something about this is indescribably pleasant) Have a nice day

I can't believe I accidentally wrote sequels instead of prequels lmfaoo thanks for pointing that out, I changed that so quickly. I also forgot to say that the animated series to me are a must watch for star wars fans to really get the scope of the universe, and experience the clone wars and the bridge between the prequels and the original trilogy in full. I also think they really help those who are negative to the prequels actually appreciate them more. I mean Dave Filoni is a genius in my mind, he is carrying the star wars franchise on his back for George's sake, trying to keep the soul and essence alive. Him and Favreau know what they're doing. The animated series were created by George and Filoni together, so just the fact you have these stories coming directly from the universes' creator himself, his vision, how can you not absorb that like you're reading from the word of god or something. And in those series, Dave Filoni was Lucas' apprentice practically, and now he's the Creative Director over at Lucasfilm, in charge of everything creative in the franchise, which is promising. The Mandalorian is the most true feeling and connection to what Star Wars is in a long time. Not since Rogue One and the animated series had I felt like I was watching Star Wars. The Mandalorian Season 1 I enjoyed very much, like I can't describe the emotion like you said, it just simply felt like Star Wars to me, I was happy. Which is saying a lot because with the sequels, the franchise made me everything BUT happy. Season 2 I think was better visually, because they had a bigger budget, I do agree that season 2 was used more as a jumping off point for other stories, which sucks bc it did take away from this actual story. BUT what I love most about is the universe building, and the history/story connections. Luke Skywalker appearing to take Grogu, assuming he is the first student of his new jedi school, which we see in the sequels doesn't end well. Bo Katan from the animated series showing up, building the story of Mandalore and what can happen there, since she was connected to Darth Maul, and her sister was Obi Wan's lover, just the connection that like wow, if Bo Katan and Luke Skywalker spoke, they would have both known Obi Wan and every fan would have lost their minds. Seeing Boba Fett again, not just the character, but the same actor, for the first time in over a decade since attack of the clones. The fact he didn't die in the Sarlac pit. Getting the Book of Boba, which if they go the dark underworld godfather mafia mob type route, would be something fans have been hoping for for a long time, a darker more adult story told in the universe. Idunno, besides the episode that showed the cloning laboratory hinting at how Snoke or Palpatine was getting cloned, I just like that the Mandalorian literally ignores the sequel trilogy completely, doesn't give a shit about that garbage. Filoni knows everybody's love for star wars comes from the original trilogy and everything in the timeline that happened before it, prequels and original trilogy. Tell your stories connecting to that. They're telling new stories, right after the fall of the empire, but they're sticking close to what we know and love, not straying too far, because the sequels are the ugly duckling of the family. I look forward to Mando season 3, though I don't know how good it will be with the mess and problems happening within disney and lucasfilm. Book of Boba will be cool, because, well, Boba is a badass. Obviously everyone is most looking forward to the Obi Wan mini series. I personally don't care about all the spinoffs. Bad Batch right now is pretty boring, I know its gonna ramp up eventually, but its boring right now. That actress got fired so I don't know how that spin off series is gonna go, or how that will affect mando since she was a major side character. And the Ahsoka show will either be a hit or miss depending how adventurous and creative they wanna go. But im glad to have a fellow star wars fan here to discuss with

I havent lmfao I just have it on my list to watch, when im scrolling through tiktok sometimes i see a viral tiktok of someone showing their top 10s, and people in the comments agreeing and raving about particular ones and ill save those videos, someone listed rurouni kenshin and the art looked sick, so I’ll go my animelist or something to see the ?/10 rating and the description, all i read was guy doesn’t want to kill anymore and just save people now. I literally saw that like the day before I recorded this video so its the first one that came to mind, since I can assume a sentence like that implies a redemptive character. I havent finished any other anime to be able to discern whether an entire plot or characters arc is one of rebirth. Only asian film
