In a way the interviewer's ignorance on Symphony & Western classical music helped in two ways - Raja sir could reach educate us in layman terms including guidance on how to improve the sensibility, second he showed us, he is becoming more temperant/ kind with our ignorance to be able to accomodate a 27 mins conversation. Wish we get to see another musically rich interviewer or a composer interview him soon.

As Raja said best way to understand symphony is start learn about it. Good example is Beethoven symphony 5 C minor no69 also known as Fate. 4 movement very easy to understand. Listen to William Walton Crown imperial similar type. More you Listen more you understand. I watched Raja's valiant brief introduction and my daughter kindly booked my ticket to March 8th concert and I m sure it's going to be a real treat 🎉
Great explanation by Raaja sir- you don't try understand the music just experience the music and enjoy the feelings and impact that brings within you. Raja brought the essence of symphony to tamil music 50 years ago that is inspiration from Ludwig van Beethoven,Wolfgang Mozart, Bach and many more great composers. However, symphony got its own format of four major instruments string, woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. Just like an art you draw your picture and make improvisation on it without spoilling or deveating the main concept.As Raaja said there is no way to inspiration and should be 100% own creativity . We are lucky people to keep this genius from Pannaipuram to Chennaipuram.This 82 years young man would bring more and more great music. God bless and long live Raaja sir.
Raja sir explains the sonata form(A-B-A Structure) in a simple and clear manner from 10.37 to 11.40 in this video. A symphony has four movements. First movement is usually in the sonata form. Sonata form has 3 Major divisions. They are 1) Exposition 2) Development and 3) Recapitulation. In the exposition section two melodic themes are introduced in 2 different keys. In the development section, the two melodic schemas introduced in the exposition section are fragmented in to various pieces , combined and contrasted together in a series of Key modulations. The final section , Recapitulation, brings together the two melodic ideas introduced in the exposition section in its original form , but this time in the same key.
Getting a chance to interview is such a great opportunity. Making a blanket statement that all songs of Illayaraja have underlying sadness in it is utter nonsense. I am still thinking what was Illayaraja thinking about that question, he might be laughing at the ignorance of the interviewer. There is no one like Illayaraja who has expressed emotions of human and all living creature through music. Whoever prepared questionnaire should take care when interviewing such great people.
Sorry to say this, but the interviewer did a very poor job. The questions were very unstructured, there was no preparation, and zero communication was built up. The worst interviewer from a worst news journal with worst ever possible questions. With utmost patience Raja has tried to start answering, then later withdrawn himself from answering in the latter part. I would have blasted, if i am asked such questions that also repeatedly exposing himself
