I saw this at the movies with my friends when I was a kid and that has to be the most memorable and funniest line in the movie. This movie came out before all of the Cannonball movies and its based on the actual illegal Gumball Rally cross country race.
Franco: And now my friend, the first-a rule of Italian driving. [Franco rips off his rear-view mirror and throws it out of the car] Franco: What's-a behind me is not important.
Any time I'm driving at night and a truck is behind me, I always feel like the high beams are on, and sometimes they are. But when a truck is blinding me I always shove the entire mirror up and out of the way. Because "what's behind me is not important".
*As a certified Italian I can indeed say that this is true. 2nd rule is if you honk and yell loudest it means you are right in every situation.*
Especially in Firenze...
LOL that created quite the visual
Every time I adjust my mirror, I think of this line.
Likewise 😂
I saw 49 years ago and I have used this line and philosophy in virtually every setting of work, fatherhood, sports etc
I have no idea what I've just watched, but I'm confident it bestowed a life-changing lesson upon me.
The start of "The Gumball Rally"

This quote changed my life.
Raul Julia in one of his best roles!
The one line I still use to this day - and I saw that movie more than 40 years ago.
Please, don't remind me.
I still use it too!

1st rule of having a wonderful life.............what's behind me is not important!
The second rule of Italian driving is: As long as you blow your horn first, anything goes!
Raul Julia always seems to have so much fun in the roles where he can really ham it up.
Gumball rally . Love the movie . Miss that guy . He made me laugh especially as Gomez Adams.
applies to life as well
Great scene, and great movie.
Best line of the movie.
“And now my friend, the first rule of Italian driving: What’s behind me is not important.”
Second rule of Italian driving, there is no second rule in Italian driving.
Norm Macdonald didn't get away with this one.
It wouldn't let me post this on Norm and Adam's conversation.
Fantastic movie!
Me in my Alfa Romeo spider when someone gets too close behind
Same is true in South Florida.
My credo, professionally and I quoted it just today.

So, that's why some people are switching lanes without blinker.
English response;
"YOU WERE ONLY SUPPOSED TO BLOW THE BLOODY DOORS OFF!"

But if you have an Italian car, won't you need that mirror to see which parts fell off and where?
