  • Using Google Earth satellite imagery, we follow the proposed alignment of the ongoing restoration of the Ashby-de-la-Zouch Canal, from the current limit of navigation at Snarestone Wharf, to the new northern terminus at Bath Yard Basin, to the north of Moira.
The proposed and existing restored sections are shown in cyan, the original alignment is shown in blue, and intersecting railways (past, present and future) are shown in yellow. Labels reflect the present day surroundings, where industry has given way to conservaion and leisure. A second video, following the original route, reflects the industrial context of the canal.

That is a really interesting vid. Wife and I did the walk from Moira to Shackerstone following the line of the old canal. Let's hope the reopening happens.

Cool flight over a future canal we will see in some years and a cool soundtrack too. Thanks for this video.

I would be very happy and pleased to see this project reach fruition but.
The costs involved in replacing lost bridges and construction new as well as digging out the filled in canal would be astronomical. Agreement with landowners to dig up their fields may be an issue and looking ahead if the plan is to hand over management of the completed canal to the Canal and River Trust that may be a problem. The CRT is so starved of funds it cannot manage the waters it has already so I cant see them taking on more.
Our country is in a financial mess and sadly great ideas like these are not even on the priority list.

Can’t see the restoration happening, but after Huddersfield narrow, Rochdale and kennet and Avon, who knows?

We've just spent two days on the Ashby Canal. Magical.
Pity about the absence of decent (by which I mean good food and real ale) along the route.
    As temperatures rise.
Who on earth wants to 50 degree Spain & Greece where you can't even go outside safely
Spend your holiday dollars in UK, and purchase a cagoule
I'd love to see this canal extension built.
How many billions are being spent (wasted?!) On HS2?
Today it's all about the profit.
    People don't come into it
