"what is he doing now that is remotely hip hop?" Y'all living under a rock or not paying attention. Lately Yasiin has been doing DOOM tributes in Europe.
Thanks for educating us. We love different perspectives, but how is that progressing his message. Are artists getting more credit now for performing other people's music over their own.
It was one show, and was that not another cover song performance?
Mos Def should have just called Drake Hip Pop, since he’s obviously a hybrid. I think ultimately Mos Def just meant that Drake isn’t much of a lyricist, but no current rap that hits the charts really has 🔥 lyrics anymore.
Lyricism has been in decline for what is charting Black Thought's freestyle on the Sway show, pretty much showed new jacks what they was missing
Drake hasn't evolved with his original crowd and that's evident in the music he makes now.
Drake has definitely strayed pretty far from his sound when he started
Yeah "hip-hop" might be a popular genre but only this version of it. Ita pretty far removed from what Mos Def thinks of as hip-hop
That is a good point, should there be multiple subgenres of hip hop?
@fromdajump aren't there? Either way....I don't see a time where drake was ever hip hop. At least not in the sense I grew up listening to it. I've always thought drake was trash. You'd never catch me bumping a drake song. That's just me though. Mos Def is the man. Seen him live, still have his tracks on my Playlist I listen to daily.
The degree to which drake fans are getting upset about this comment tells you everything you need to know. If it wasn't accurate, people would laugh and move on.
The Stans will always rebuke any valid critique of their artists for sure
Hip hop is a culture first and genre second. The genre devoid of culture is a skeleton of hip hop. It’s Hamilton, Macklemore, Drake.
So by that you're saying Drake is the least Hip-Hop of the three?
pop is the biggest genre, so you missed the whole point
I think we agree on that and if anything Mos was giving a backhanded compliment versus a diss.
since when has pop been back as the biggest genre?
Mos Def's whitepeople voice is fucking hilarious. I gotta go watch that interview
Have you seen hitchhikers guide to the galaxy? Mos plays a rather large part in it. Great movie.
@@magincap70 Saw it when it came out. Really liked it
We definitely laughed watching that interview
