Trying to get the dude with the knives to hit the wheel, constantly missing the jump then falling to the bottom while hearing "Heeeelp" "Not my face" "Hey that hurts" "Razputiiiiin" over and over is enough to make anyone shatter their xbox controller
Only within the past few weeks did I learn that you can just use Shield and the knives will bounce right into the wheel.
You can reach the platforms without using the knives & spinning wheel. After landing at 5:30, just use the levitation jump to reach the bunny. You can skip the 2nd knives & spinning wheel by using a rolling ball jump from the spinning wheel platform. I'm terrible at platforming games (played only FPS games until I bought a Series X & Game Pass) so if I can get past that part, anyone should be able to do the same.
its literally the reason i just gave up and watched this for the ending, AND IM PLAYING IT WITH KEYBOARD. I CANNOT.

Kids may exaggerate. But it dosen't just happen in a whim. Augustus probably never clarified he had no hatred for psychics and raz probably saw more evidence to the contrary

Can I just say how much I love the twist with Augustus Aquato. All game you hear about him like he's this monster, and Raz comes close to calling him abusive.
You forget that Raz is ten. He's a kid who got into a bad argument with his father, he's not thinking clearly. His dad is a perfectly nice dude who didn't understand that his son doesn't need to hide his abilities like he did. He really does mean the best, but he's human. He makes mistakes. When you're a kid, you think your parents are Invincible, so when they make a mistake that you notice, you think they must be doing it on purpose to hurt you.

If you really want to see what's driving people nuts, play this level on mouse and keyboard. Controllers have a massive advantage here.

Played it on a computer on the first playthrough. The circus was absurdly easy in my opinion.
Did it and oh man was it painful. It took me five tries to get past the last platforming section.
I didn’t have an xbox controller when I first played this game, so I had to play the whole thing with mouse and keyboard.
The final platforming challenge was Hell.
Nah people are going nuts mostly because of the older versions of the game (e.g. PS2 port) which had a way more difficult version of the meat circus, one with more enemies that kept killing Morry too quickly.
This is a very unsettling level. A mental connection between Raz and Oleander’s nightmares become a surprisingly haunting combination of a circus and meat. Food levels are usually fun to explore, but looking at all this meat is seriously making me uncomfortable. Then there’s the insane amount of platforming befitting of an acrobat. Some weird distortion that pops up sometimes saying “Razputin” (which thankfully turned out to be Augustus trying to reach Raz). And finally, the nightmare dads trying to kill you. Truly a pretty nice last level for Psychonauts to end in. I wonder what the last level for Psychonauts 2 is gonna be, and if it’ll manage to give off the same feeling of nightmare fuel like the Meat Circus did.
Odd Take: The last level in Psyconauts 2 will have you explore a Necromanced Brain and what that would do to a person. Exploreing what was their near death experience or the brain is actively decaying and you've got to get out of it somehow.
I don’t think the sequels final level could ever meat the expectations set by this level

Man i remember being so hyped for the sequel after this cliffhanger ending ,later on i found out how poorly the game did in sales and that there was no hope for a sequel ,fast forward 16 years later and here we are only few weeks away from the sequel ,words cant describe how hyped iam ,the original game is my favorite platformer ever ,im very proud for the gaming community for making this dream a reality and im proud of tim schafer and his team.
Edit: Finally played and finished Psychonauts 2 and its by far one of the best games i have ever played and was worth the wait its currently my goty of 2021 its an absolute masterpiece.
The Meat Circus ruined this game and the sequel too.

I didn't even KNOW you could confuse the bunny.
This made the platforming bit at the beginning SO MUCH easier than using telekinesis.
Confuse the bunny? I DIDN’T KNOW YOU COULD JUST PICK THE DAMN THING UP YOURSELF! I thought that only young Oleander could pick them up.

Sometimes it just confuses Oly too when he gets close enough while the bunny's stun duration is the first to wear off, so it's not worth it. Just use TK.
@@MisterJohnDoethe video literally shows that that doesn't matter. On the ground level, they do exactly that, confuse both the bunny and little oly, but it doesn't matter because if you pick the bunny up little oly automatically takes it from you and continues upwards
The circus broke me I can’t get past it and every time I get close the little guy gets killed resetting the whole level it drives me insane
I know, I'm just like "boy if you cry I'm about to slap you with my psychic hand!" Ok that was over explanatory on my part but still it's annoying trying to reach him while he's getting hurt by the meat bunnies
On top of that, if you get past that part, later there are some damm fences almost impossible to pass.

I only got pass that section due to a glitch that accidentally spawned further into the level.
Gotta admit though, the theme for Meat Circus is pretty jazzy

It's interesting because Ras's dad has been built up as this evil person, and then you finally meet him and you realize... he's a decent guy.
@@johnkloosterman6277 he just was wary of psychics because of what happened to him. Look at the li-po leak document, it explains the history of the aquatos and there rival. But be warn, that might lessen the fun for the sequel.

16:55 I ALWAYS hated this part of the freaking chapter. You can NEVER tell if you're too far out or if you're too close to catch the fence. To this day, this level still haunts me and forces me to never replay this game again. My hands were COATED in sweat by the time I finally made it through this cursed level.

in here Augustus looks like a master psychic but in the sequel he lost those abilities and become newbie psychic
Well, we also learn that most every psychic has their specialties. Augustus probably specializes in astral projection and telepathy, especially because he could do it without a portal. Not to mention that he's nothing but raw potential at this point, and was under stress at the time.
No, he just spent the entire game trying to master pyrokinesis which he had never used before. That's why he kept causing that pinecone to smoke. That and he was self-teaching it so it took longer.

Piggi5X the Awesome :Do I have to show you why I freaking love Meat Circus ok then here: Probably the most creepiest mental world in Psychonauts I mean cmon a Circus mixed with freaking meat and especially those poor bunnies getting meat grinding to pieces and then sewed together into one scariest creature that’s an amalgamation, and then we got the final boss inside the Big Top which also has a very creepy atmosphere to it like a giant butcher which is Coach Oleander’s Dad that has blood all over his clothes which are the remains of those poor bunnies, then we get a freaky scene where Razputin’s Dad that’s a fake gets thrown into a giant meat grinder that’s in the middle of the Big Top, we then also have an acrobatic stage where the water which is Razputin’s fear where he needs to run for his life, and then the final boss of Psychonauts which is a creepy combination of two of Oleander’s and Razputin’s fathers sewn together into a freaking creepy amalgamations that also has blood all over their clothes, these are the reasons is why I freaking loved the Meat Circus Mental World and I think you guys should also!!!

The Way Augustus Comforts Raz After The Circus
Cognitive dads:
Separate: The Butcher(Oleander's dad) and The Acrobat (Razputin's dad)
Fused: The Acrobutcher
Razputin: *defeats The Butcher once*
The Acrobat: And I took that personally.

I almost want to call the very final boss the "Acrobutcher" now. That's pretty good.
The part with the bunny is probably one of the worst parts I've ever played in a videogame. I don't know what they were thinking adding that.
Escort missions, man.
A lot of the end of the game feels a lot of cobbling together an ending from what was planned to be a much longer ending. Tim Shaeffers projects notoriously go often over time and budget and Psychonauts was no exception. I think this may go a long way to explain some of the poor design decisiona and sudden difficulty spikes.
As for the escort mission itself, beyong being a new and harder challenge, I think they sort of wanted the player to feel like kid Oleander was more vulnerable compared to the guy you jsut had a boss fight with, maybe ? Sort of try to see him in a new light ?
@@s.m.2523 well, I should have explained myself better. While I like the concept and the idea, I do not like how it was put into the game. I actually like even the art direction, but what I completely hate is the ending gameplay-wise. The fact that I like short endings (these feel way more dynamic and give a better sense of wrapping up concepts) affects a lot too.

I learned this from the Psychonauts wiki. From 28:04 - 28:07 you can see Raz's original design (a character named d'Artagnan) peek from out of the outhouse. Very blink and you'll miss it.
Yeah, I gotta agree with everyone here: this is a bit frustrating to go through. The parts with the swordsmen are tricky to go through, falling at any point during the Olly section is basically a slow death, and the acrobat challenge is hard to avoid damage on since you can’t pay attention to him
The rest of it is great, the bosses are fun and the conclusion to the story of Psychonauts 1 is golden

The section when you're grinding the rails is the most infuriating part! Raz won't stay on course or those knife throwers some how just miraculously hit me. Terrible level

Consider the Meat Circus here what I like to call a fusion level, where the developers of a game decided to combine different themes into one level. Plus, this won't be the last time we see something like this in Psychonauts, as one of the new levels, that being within the mind of Hollis Forsythe, second in command of the organization, where it's a casino and hospital fused into a neon filled mess.
I think when designing this level they asked the people working on this game what the craziest dream they’ve ever had was.

That level was a nightmare. Game mechanics working horribly infuriated a lot of people, myself included.
yep. and, as always, there's people who will praise poorly made levels. that whole level was so damn poorly done. Every aspect of it is flawed, not to mention the horrible screaming of the kid while you have to deal with buggy platforms, edges that dont work, one of the worst decisions in human history (the knife throwing guys) and a frustrating experience of falling to the bottom every time something eventually bugs out or just doenst work in its ridiculous time span
Yeah, the game has a lot of good art direction and humor but as a game it is only average. With the decent level design average was passable, but with the horrible level design here it was on full display.
I gave up. Had enjoyed my experience until this level.. It's like there was a bring your kids to work day and they let their children fuck around and design this level.
If I had a nickel for everytime the final boss of a Psychonauts game involved Raz getting help from his family to make a massive mental projection of himself to fight a twisted representation of his family I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice, right?

spent hours on this level only for the game to crash during the middle of the final boss fight! i lost so much time that i dont want to go back a redo so thank you for letting me live through the end of the level via this video lol

I would love to see a remake with the visuals redone, gameplay the exact same just new visuals, because of how disgustingly realistic they can make the meat clumps in this level

After seeing how they did Loboto's Labrynth (so many teeth....) I both need and despise the concept of a remake Meat Circus. Hopefully if they do they'll fix the jank that made Meat Circus so unbearable

Playing this just before getting into Psychonauts 2, I'm surprised how well the game has aged. This level though sure feels like a throwback to a time when the line between hard and infuriating was really, really thin. Either that, or I have become soft with age. I can't believe I not only finished the game way back when, but I also don't remember this level at all. This time around, I just gave up trying to get Ollie all the way to the top and came here to watch the ending on RUclips instead. It's a bit embarrasing...
I got through this game having previously gotten through one third of psychonauts 2. It's amazing how much more frustrating moments are in the first part of this dilogy compared to the second, it's just heaven and earth.

Ugh the climbing those little grates with the fire coming out of them on Ps4 was a fucking nightmare, literally couldn't beat it, the X button wasn't working for a double jump. Whatever, watching it instead.
Playing it on PC right now and I can't double jump either. Literally gave up after like 2 hours of trying, need to cool off a bit before attempting again

The same part is fucking me up right now, badly. I played this game and beat it on the PC back in in around 2008. Now I'm playing it on Xbox One and I'm wondering how the fuck I managed to beat it the first time. Seems next to impossible.

Raz's dad calls you a cheater because you use your psychic powers on top of your acrobatics to make it past the obstacle course.

When learned can confuse the bunny, made part cake walk, but damn ascent up big top with water rising is still crazy as hell!
Another thing i wish hell fix this, if screw up when reach check point, they 2 of em during water acrobatic ascent! Then get stuck there with water close to character, which is also bullshit!

The acrobatic part was hard but the level only took me 40 min.
Fun level just sometimes frustrating gaming.

What's up with Meat Circus is that you're a big baby. Sure, sure, invisibility is very important when Raz's dad is trying to knock you off those tight ropes. And your shield will bounce the knife thrower's blades right into those spinning target wheels. And also you can throw a confusion grenade at that bunny and then just go pick it up, instead of trying to grab it with Telekinesis. Those things are also true. But the main point I'm trying to make here is that first one, about you being a big baby.

Personally, as a person who spent an entire day grueling over Meat Circus, the level design itself isn't that bad. It's just the Lil Oly escort part that's utterly awful. Screeching little kid wailing as you try to platform up to him with those damn dart boards. The rest of the level, I believe, is a testament to finales in gaming, and the level as a whole is one of the best thematically, artistically, and emotionally. However, it is overshadowed by the complete and utter frustration and Hell that the Lil Oly Escort mission was. The level would have been perfectly fine without it (hell, the bosses weren't even that hard).

On the computer version the dad doesn’t throw the fire thing all the time but the ps4 version he does
I’d say the only part I really struggled on was that huge ladder, since I didn’t know that you could climb in different directions.
Decided to play the first game again (it's been 15 years) before I jump into the second... Got to the water rising bit and nope'd right the fuck out. Thanks for the video, was able to see the ending and now can play the second one with my sanity still intact!
Same, there was this Single obstacle with the climbing walls twisting around and I just couldn’t get past it

That was the original version of the game. I had it to. Basically had to have God tier luck to beat that segment....or cheese a the timing glitch in between getting hit with the fire sticks

Finally passed the flame grates. My advice: climb to upper-left corner of each grate & Jump away from the current grate rather than towards the next grate enables the double-jump & float.

What I do is double jump and float to the other side of the next and grate. It's easier to jump between them when you're on the inside of the spiral.

The platforming to get to the father after the fight I just can’t do it my jumps never want to input properly so I’d just fall into the water and it pissed me off so much I had to uninstall which really makes me sad because those last two fights look fairly easy

Let me tell you guys. I've been playing through this game for the first time ever this past week. I got to the flooding level. First time I was able to get up a way before I fell off. But now the trampoline at the very start won't let me use it anymore. I just fall straight through no matter what I do. I was 100% on everything up till then too -_-. Now I'm just watching this so I know how the story ends.

Im at the rail-grinding bit of my playthrough and im extremely frustrated because im having a problem that i dont see on these playthrough videos--when i jump to jump the gaps, raz just goes off course and i fall to my death. Totally not raging at an old game for being a little buggy lmao
If you don't jump and just take the hits you won't fall off

i was stuck on the freaking stairs for 15 minutes just o find out you just slide downstairs ...nice playtrough i figured the shield was the answer to most of the recent puzzles

I raged with the ropes stuck together at the meat piece, right before the spiral climbing section, because Raz’s feet just wouldn’t land on the next rope, but the previous one. And oh boy, the spiral. Between the awful camera angle messing with the direction my character went, and passing from fence to fence made want to break my computer. And I was already mad with Oleander screaming and the swordmen parts.
Did anyone else watch this instead of beating the actual game cus they couldn’t get past meat circus?
This entire level made me almost start screaming curses and slurs into my mic while live on twitch. It is so stupid.

the game crashed for me right as the plane was taking off. I rushed here thinking "I hope I didn't miss anything" instead of playing the last 15 minutes again. Glad to see I was right.
Pretty good game, can't believe it took me so long to get around to it. First time I tried was on an old laptop in 2010 and it ran like garbage. The game still holds up visually for sure. I found the gameplay to be... well kinda rough around the edges. But collecting things was fun, the writing was really sharp and the 3d platforming was pretty solid. It didn't make me want to rush out and get Psychonauts 2 but it sure was worth the wait.
Raz straight up won't land on the platform after the fire rings 🤷🏻♂️
I spent about an hour just trying to do this segment from 16:30 to 17:35. The controls are clunkier than it looks here, and the camera was no help at all.
This level was way too hard for how easy the rest of the game was

The platforming while having to protect baby Coach literally made me ragequit. I'm gonna go back and try again later, but good LORD. This level was such a pain.

Seems like there are a lot of people in this comment section that think this level is genuinely bad, but I really liked it, it was a nice challenge.
My issue was with the lil Ollie escort part when trying to save both him and his bunny. That part was annoying but overall the whole mission is what happens when two minds are one especially the nightmares both share
