Anyone ever wanna learn to comp. this is essential listening. Kelly might not have the name of Hancock, Tyner or Silver, but the comping on this session is truly from another world
I listened to Montgomery's version of Round Midnight from 1965. A superb rendition of a jazz standard by one of the premier artists in jazz. Bravo, Wes!!
9:17 is amazing- Wes and Wynrton are so in tune throughout and after playing for nine minutes to be so sympathetic is what jazz is all about IMHO..... incredible,
It just goes to prove that jazz well played and executed is timeless, and sounds just as good now as it did when first recorded years ago. Hooray youse guys for posting this great music. Frank
This is by far the best Wes Montgomery album; a master piece, I agree with Pat Metheny when he says this is the best Jazz record ever, with all respect for Miles Davis' Kind of Blue.
@@guitarman6742 Yes... I was surprised reading his autobiography - he never mentioned Wes there.. only after he learned about Hendrix... we was jealous of his success... like a leech sucking blood
no, Walt, I think it's the other way around. The fact that Wes did not receive formal instruction on musical theory and could, instead, play beyond the boundaries of traditional jazz musicians may have contributed to the fact that so many contemporaries in the jazz world could not acknowledge him - especially since Wes had a growing fan base among the popular music listener.
walt7500 He is not a lousy guitarist. Try to match his chops, I dare you. We has the greatest octave chops and was able to make the greatest phrases. His thumb technique is not match by anyone! You have no idea what you are talking about
Why come onto a video and bag on Wes...Your just trolling. It's cool if you "prefer" Butler, but come on now. That leaves to believe your just not hearing Wes and could not even if you wanted to.
H0E0M0G14 these people are nuts if they think this man didn't know music theory. Hahaha..are they kidding? Any musician with crazy knowledge about music would tell you this guy was beyond his contemporaries. You will never witness somebody playing jazz guitar with the authority and control he possesses. It's like all they great ones, the confidence in every note is intimidating to all that fall short of it. Jealously trying to bring it down to their level with words and not actions.
he plays an the top three notes of an eb major 7 chord. so G Bb D. which is also a minor triad. But he is thinking e flat major 7 b5 for the most part when the bass player is playing an F during this chorus
They learned in an empirical way, which means they didn't limit themselves by abstractions like theory and it didn´t blind themselves from the essence of music. Music theory can come later in life, it is best to start off by feeling the music.
Listening to Paul Chambers gives new meaning to the old cliché, "Without missing a beat!" Rest in peace, my inspiration for all things double bass.

I recently bought LOTS of Wes Montgomery Albums, including this one!
I have most of them... enjoy ! 😉 There´s all you need to know about guitar playing....
When I think of a swinging blues, this is the song that I think of. One of the great all time guitar solos.
Absolutely.
歴史に残るすごい演奏の1つ😁😁😁
Wynton, Paul, and Jimmy swing so hard, it's unbelievable! And of course, Wes was the greatest!

MIles didn't really like guitar...until he got funky.

A classic album - historic.

Wes Montgomery - always was the guitarmeister even if some of his jazz contemporaries did not acknowledge him - as they should have.

Wes knew what he was doing. Man knew his harmony backwards and forwards.

My favorite recording! Am I the only one who thinks that Wes's guitar is slightly out of tune?
