    🥒 ABOUT BEFRS:
Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

Coming from someone who actually lives in Africa and was not aware of these tribes is actually pretty mind blowing. It’s amazing to see such diversity and different living situations, the more you know huh😭. But in all seriousness, Africa legit seems like a whole vibe to visit one day (US citizen from Texas here)

It’s fascinating to see how certain African tribes hunt their own food. They have a wide variety of animals roaming around, and they never seem to run out of choices. They all go together in groups which makes up for effective teamwork and cooperation.

Well actuallly the old chief told this fella I was listening to, that there used to be thousands of species it was like a supermarket you could pick any animal you could ever want and there was plenty of them. Now it’s just baboons and small game like birds or bush babies. It’s getting harder for them to hunt because the baboons are getting smart along with the hunters.

It's so much different. You talk about the country, the economic crisis, cultural traditions/customs and the most important question you ask a lot of people is are they happy living where they live. I get so surprised by the little things that bring people happiness. Especially the tribes they are happy with what they have. It's beautiful to see. 💞💗

Its one thing just to go and film, but he wants to go further and learn how to complement the food hes been given in the native language. Every single time. I cant imagine how many takes he had trying to click the names as well as the iron will to humbly accept all offerings, paying respect to the knowledge that hes being gifted the foods he gets offered.

There hasn’t been a better time for armchair philosophy than this day and age. I want to relate the documentary to the views of Arnold Gehlen. Gehlen was a Nazi und his major work was written during the second world war, so his views are not getting the attention they deserve.
What makes us humans special amongst all creatures? The easy answer is, we have a big brain which makes us intelligent. But the answer is problematic. First, our brain is not the biggest. Second, intelligence is a poorly defined term. Third, if you look carefully into the nature of intelligence, you will find that a lot of it is bound up in the fact that we have this particular body moving and feeling in a particular situation.
The central view of Gehlen’s anthropology is that humans are deficient being. Deficient in the sense that unlike any other creatures, we morpho-physiologically don’t fit into any section in the purely natural environment. In order to survive, we must transform parts of mother nature to our advantage. And this transformation is of fundamental importance for cultures. Gehlen goes so far to say that our natural world equals our cultural world and our culture is our second nature. Thus the dichotomy between nature and culture is partially resolved.
One can see it from this documentary. The Hadzabe are probably the last hunter-gatherers on earth. These people don’t hunt with bare hands. Making weapons is their first thing in the morning and they have domesticated four legged friends at their aid. They couldn’t completely resist the temptation of convenience of the more advanced civilization. They wear textile, use metal arrowheads, metal knives, modern cooking vessels and cover themselves with cloth blankets at night. Whatever ingredient they use in making the ugali (the porridge) must come from agriculture.

It’s stuff like this that encourages me to go outside, even if it’s not to be some crazy good hunter, it’s just nice to go outside and explore nature y’know? Maybe like climb a tree, or go herping. Heck, try to make a tool or something from resources in the area. (Even if it’s not really well done and is ultimately useless, it’s still a fun activity to do in your free time, at least in my eyes anyway-)

As a white guy in America I look at this and think…these guys got the right idea. Get up, hang around the fire, go hunt, come back and have a big community cook out. None of this fighting traffic to work a menial job or two, just so you can afford a bunch’a sh** and an apartment or house to put it in that your never really at cuz your always working. This to me looks like true happiness. The whole community is close and works together. If they get a good catch they can just hang out for a day or two. No filling out W-2s, no filing paperwork and contracts, no endless bills from every company in the country for all these things that don’t really make you happy anyway. They had the right idea all along.
