    Hi Brian,
    Great lateral thinking.
    Excellent job.
    I will have to make one of these :)
    Thanks for posting.
    Cheers Rob

    Ingeniosa manera de re-inventar el uso del mecanismo biela-manivela-corredera.. Felicidades por tu creatividad.

    Now that's repurposing to the max. Well done in my book. And I have tons of engines I can use great idea thanks . Even an old air compressor will work. I had planned on using an old reciprocating saw or even sewing machine head. Thanks for another .

    I really like and respect a build like your filer. You managed to build a very useful tool from all scrap. Doesn't look like you spent one penny extra on this build.
    And it works great. Kudos.

      Thanks Tim C for your favourable comment. You're right, not a penny was spent, unless you count electricity for the machining ,etc. !
      I'm fortunate that, being an inveterate hoarder, I have a vast stock of "that might come in useful someday" bits and pieces to draw from which I regularly make use of in projects like this..

    Absolutely ingenius! Also one of those moments when one realises , "Hang on , i have all those bits and pieces! " Thanks Brian! Very nicely done!

      Apparently I am the only one in 4 years that has read your comment and thought the same thing. I have a old blown up moped engine that may serve a better purpose in the afterlife!

      @@deadboltdon8745 Hah! Now that you mention it - so do I , Little Italjet that came as a job lot , incomplete , would be perfectly suited!!
      Only problem is I have more projects that I have years left! Lol!

      Thinking about this today. The stroke may be a little short. But the adjustable table may help using the whole file.
      A air compressor pump may be a better option.. Why did i just get rid of thé extra pump i had a few months ago....

    Very nice work. Now I see how I can actually build one of these without the use of any machinery.

    Your filer's bed looks adjustable. If he bottom of the file is too worn to use, just raise the table adjustment. When you run out of adjustment, you could just add some wood with a hole as a spacer until your file is completely used up. Nice machine! :-)

    • @confabrication
      @confabrication  7 лет назад

      Yes, Ron, - the bed is adjustable for height so you can use up all the file by adjusting it or adding packing as you have said.

    Wonderful work, cheers mate.How did u eliminate the heat caused due to rubbing of piston with the cylinder wall? I understand that rings are not used, have you reduced the diameter of the piston so that the file holder just slides only through the head?

    • @confabrication
      @confabrication  6 лет назад

      Thanks for favourable reply, Gowri Shankar,
      There is a small amount of oil in the crankcase which lubricates the bottom end bearings and the piston by splash, so no heat is generated necessitating any reduction of the piston diameter. In any case, extra clearance here would only reduce side support for the file holder shaft which is a precision sliding fit in the cylinder head.. Hope this answers your questions.

      Thanks for the reply. Im in process of building one similar to this. Its your video which was the initiative.

    Could you explain a little bit about how you attached the " up and down piece" to the top of the piston?

    • @confabrication
      @confabrication  7 лет назад +1

      Yes, James Olivier, - I turned down the end of the piston spindle (the 'up & down piece' ) forming a locating diameter to match a hole bored in the piston. A thread was formed on a reduced portion of this locating diameter (can briefly be seen at 5:09 in the video), to match a tapped hole in the piston crown. When screwed together a lock nut was fitted inside the piston to prevent loosening in service. Hope this goes some way to explaining it - damned difficult without a sketch !

      Brian Davison makes good sense I understand,. I new I kept that old weed whacker around for a reason! and another project is added to the list!

    • @confabrication
      @confabrication  7 лет назад

      Good man James ! It's great to hear of someone prompted to make a filer along these lines. Please bear in mind that concentricty of the piston spindle, the hole in the cylinder head and the hole in the piston is of the utmost importance - you only get one chance at it. I can't emphasise this enough. Good luck and hoping to see a video of your work when completed !

      Brian Davison thank you so much for the tips and pointers. I can't wait to get started on it! I've actually never posted a video before! I will figure it out and post when I am done, I think it'll be a great first video.

    What is the "DIE" in die filing about?

    • @confabrication
      @confabrication  3 года назад

      To tell you the truth I don't really know either ! I just made this for filing holes as shown. Try Googling it and see if you can find an explanation.

    thumbs up for ingenuity, but I am sure you could have picked quieter components.

    • @confabrication
      @confabrication  7 лет назад

      Yes, Andrei, old starter motors are inherently noisy and this one is no exception. Thanks for the ingenuity thumbs up , anyway.
