- This is the Victoria Washhouse Public Laundry shortly before it was demolished. The public washhouse was much more than just a place to do your washing it was also a place where women socialised and they would help each other, notice that while one puts her washing through the ironing machine another takes it off and folds it.
Brilliant - I used to hate it when my Mum asked me to go the washhouse on the odd occasions when she was poorly (In Elizabeth Street Manchester) Pushing the pram with all the washing loaded - it was so embarrassing - but I never thought a jot about changing my clothes maybe twice a day. Poor Mum!
My late mother taught me to iron and look after my home also washing,I thank my lord for my mother and how she taught me these things has i live on my own now thankyou mum, god bless and r.i.p
I love these old wash house videos
@hetsgirl Thanks for leaving your comment, I find that the older I get the more that I appreciated all the things that my mum use to do for us and how much easier we have things today.
No public laundry in my home town. It was dolly tub, ponch and wringer. There was a gas heated copper in the kitchen. Ironing was done using flat irons heated on the gas cooker. This was the early 60's.
When you're poor, you don't buy new when what you have still works
My mom had a tub too.
Thank you for posting this! It is fascinating to me. Yes, I noticed how one woman was helping the other and folding her clothes.
Thank you for posting. It’s fascinating to watch. I agree how the wash house seemed to have a friendly atmosphere with the ladies working as a team together and enjoying their well earned cup of tea afterwards.
It was as much a social club as a wash house. I take my clothes down the hall and never encounter another person. There was something so personal sharing your common dirt in the steamie. We have become so personal that we would be embarassed to have someone else even see our dirty laundry.
Hey @maggs224 this video just popped into my feed. Jeez does this bring back memories.
It was always nice to go to the washhouse in winter as it was lovely and warm especially by those massive slide in slide out drying racks.
How times have changed in such a relatively short time? 😱👍
I used to have to carry and drag a large bag of my dads overalls to the ‘bag wash’ up the high street in Poplar
A place identical to this is shown in A Place to Go 1963 starring Rita Tushingham with Yootha Joyce in an uncredited role doing her washing
very good film clip of how ared washday used to be
My misses gets shitty if i ask her to take the recycling out
Procedures of how to use a copper boiler
I remember discovering poo balls in a Harpurhey Washhouse Manchester machine, luckily before i put my washing in. Excessively dirty nappies that weren’t scraped beforehand left perfect marble size balls of turd in the drum.
I'll bet you some of those women managers of the wash house made certain that certain young women who brought their nappies in had to have them scraped before they went into the washer I could well imagine that
@twintub4 Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment I really appreciate it.
A cup of tea dear ?
Is this still going on in 2019?
Amparo Howell no, apparently the last working wash house of this type was closed in around 1995
Good to no
Mum had 6 of use in 8and a half years I was born 54 and mum did all the washing by hand and she had a part-time job when my youngest brother went to school in 61 I don't know who see looked after the house and aĺ of us plus dad mum got her first washing machine aboutb63 and the day it was delivered me and mum came back from shopping and the front door was wide open and you could see down the hall into the kitchen dad whistling and doing the washing in a washer with rolls dad had only gone out one day and get the washing machine on the never never in those days you didn't brag you bought things and paid for them in instalment
I'll bet you he had a row with her the night before And he did that to get on a good side
