If I remember correctly, these pins weighed 3 pounds,10 ounces. In most instances, the pins currently used weigh 3 to 4 ounces less. Heavier pins are not as lively.
Is it just me? Or, do these gold-painted pins appear to have less bounce on them? I first noticed this when I watched the ABC Masters where Parker Bohn III bowled the 300-game. When I watched that match, the pins seems somewhat flat to me. Hard for me to describe in words alone. Was there ever a decrease in pin deflection when pins are painted like this?
I see! Quoting Johnny Carson, "I did not know that!" Why did they make the pins heavier, and then went back to the lighter weight? That period was VERY strange. The gold pins... the applauding just before and even during the delivery. What were they thinking!?!?!?
I think the PBA Gold pins were around 3lb 10oz to 3lb 12oz with single voids as opposed to the regular 3lb 6,7,8oz double voided pins in normal use. They used to throw at pins as light 3lb 2oz until the mid 80s when they changed the rule for minimum pin weight

What was the deal with the gold pins in this era
they tried to attract more audience by making everything hideous and hard to watch. And it made everything worse
himmler either lost his ball reaction or threw some real bad shots towards the end of that match.
I think he got too concerned with winning and didn’t focus on each shot
Ah the gold pins of the late 90s. they came out right after ABC ended their run and the tour was trying to regain interest with novelties
