Persona used to be a niche RPG series that came out of the bigger franchise Shin Megami Tensei which was also fairly niche. Nowadays, most RPG fans have at least heard the name Persona or tried out one of the games in the series. Seeing cosplays, fan arts and a ton of discussion online about the Persona franchise made me wonder what happened to make Persona this mainstream. Why is Persona so popular now?
This video is a love letter to one of my favourite RPG franchise of all time. What makes Persona so special to you?

Is a part of the otaku culture that was very niche back in the 80's and 90's and influenced some people of my gen, gen Xers. Like I wrote in my comment in this video, Persona is the total package of weeb/otaku culture. Since nowadays, most only do gaming or only anime, it wasn't like that during the 80's and 90's, we do it and loved it both, anime and gaming, gen Xers were the true pioneers, when was still a very niche thing. Your gen, either being millennials or Zoomers only maded more popular and main streamed.

"Every time you finish a Persona game, there's this weird feeling of leaving friends behind..."
You're 100% right, and it used to make me do this weird thing where I'd stop JUST short of beating the games!
I'd do every little thing, level up as much as possible, get 99% of the compendium, then save right before the final boss & just keep putting it off because I didn't want it to be over.

Persona taught me more about understanding myself, and that a shadow can be against you or if you accept it. It can change into a persona that fights with you

Persona's appeal is really found at the intersecting points of the RPG and life sim elements that are held together by the awesome visual and auditory energy. In most other games, these tropes become stale but there's something about Persona that's always fresh. It's a lineage that comes down to the talented designers' personal touch. Persona 6 dev team has big shoes to fill, since the big 3 have moved on from P-Studio.

It all started for me as a university student, playing emulator on my laptop and came up with Devil Survivor..Man that game was perfect..Since then bought 3ds,bought everything shin megami related game, spinoffs of persona. Bought Switch played everything related again,Smt 3,Persona strikers to finally play the masterpiece of P5 and of course SMT V, Vengeance etc..Persona 5 was good because everything clicked. The visuals, the story, the amazing battle system..Really love Atlus and SMT related games.

I got into persona through an acquaintance in high school who incessantly talked about Persona 3 and 4. When I saw him during gym class he would always tell me about the characters, story, and personas. Since I didn’t have a PlayStation at the time and became highly interested in the series, he recommended I watch the P4 anime and not watch any gameplay of the other games; wait to play them myself but just watch P4 so I have something to engage with when we talked about persona. About two years later when I went to college, I bought a PS5 the day it released one of the first games I bought that day was Persona 5 Royal. After beating it I was hooked and after replaying it 3 times in a row (I seriously couldn’t put it down, P5 consumed my life in late 2020-mid 2021) After thoroughly enjoying P5S when it released, I figured it was finally time to play through the other games in the series. I found a psp for a decent price and bought a copy of P3P, since it was the only of the modern trilogy I had not experienced to this point aside from hearing about Tartarus and some of the characters from my high school friend. It has since become my favorite game in the franchise. For my birthday that year, my brother got me a copy of P4G on steam, which barely ran on my laptop but I stuck with it nevertheless. Here we are in 2024 and I still actively love this franchise. I have recently been getting into the older persona games after finding a copy of P2 IS for cheap a year or two ago at a yard sale. As corny as it is to say, persona changed my life and I’m so happy that acquaintance in high school decided to share his love of the series with me.

At least Atlus finally acknowledged DDS for it's 20th anniversary with the soundtrack and some merchandise. Though if they are doing anything with the games you will more then likely have to wait till near the end of the anniversary next year.

Part of the big draw for me is that it's not structured like any of its competitors. Pretty much every other JRPG is set up as a globe trotting adventure while Persona is confined to one area and the journey is more about managing your time well as well as discovering and bonding with new friends. Really makes the power of friendship trope feel like it really fits here instead of normally just a deus ex machina.

I initially tried to start woth p3p but since i was still new to the genre at the time i didn't really like it, few years later, in 2019 i saw a trailer of p5r and since it looked so cool i instantly preordered it, then the pandemic came and i was completely immersed in the world of p5r, it's still my favorite persona game and my favorite game of all time, i was obsessed with it, i wanted more, after that i tried p3p again and fricking loved it and finally, since didn't have pc i bought a ps tv just to play p4g, and i loved it as well. After that i played every spin off as well as the classic trilogy. These game completely changed my life in a way no other game probably will, i'm so grateful to have discovered them

Probably it's themes, the slice of life stuff, being very anime influenced and it's jrpg of capturing/training/collecting Personas like they are Pokémon. It's one of the few jrpgs based on our world, timeline and reality, unlike being a fantasy setting, medieval or futuristic setting.

Persona 5 Royal was my first game in the series, and I'm normally a Nintendo person. Let's just say this is my favorite game not made by Nintendo. Is it perfect? No. There are some things with the story where I disagreed with. Mostly with the gay men essentially kidnapping Ryuji for a night. That was unnecessary. I also thought Akechi should have had his own Palace and built up Shido more than they did. Madarame and Kaneshiro didn't feel like they contributed much to the overall story, especially when compared to other Palaces. It's still a good game, don't get me wrong, but there are some changes I would have made to potentially make this game better.
