- Welcome is an Award Winning South African Short Film About Facing Your Past.
James, a washed up South African writer needs to return to the home, he and his brother Ezekiel grew up in and he ran away from. Upon returning to the home the dark mysteries of the now empty house begin to reveal themselves again and James becomes haunted by the past he shares with the house and more importantly his now deceased father. A mysterious child, an ominous door and a broken home; James is faced with two choices run away again or confront his past.
The Award Winning South African narrative of Welcome deals with something I believe we all can in someways relate to and that is the past we share with the home we grew up in. In many ways our home is symbolic of the person we have become or the person we never want to be and this narrative addresses both those sides; the good and the bad.

Outstanding performances and directing.
The cinematographer has done an amazing job in capturing the light and scenery. Overall impressed with team and production.
I'm no movie critic but this was really good work!! In fact, I lived a very closely similar life story. Dad was not what I called abusive, but more like an extreme disciplinarian. He would not spare the rod, let's say. Well my older brother didn't like any of it, and ran away during high school years. He never looked back. Broke my heart, to this day, dad is long passed away & my brother does not wish to be family with the rest of us. My dad and I made amends when I grew to manhood, so did my other siblings. In fact, I speak highly of my dad because of the lessons he ended up teaching me indirectly. And, he was a provider. Somehow none of that mattered to older brother. Life goes on. Thanks for this film - a glance into reality.
I’m an inspiring filmmaker and I was looking for short films from country and I’m glad I found this 😍.Omg everything in this film is great ,cinematography, sound , acting , the story . I love it , it really deserved to win an award or awards ❤🔥🙌🏾
Keep up the good work 😊
Thank you for the kind comments. Good luck with your filmmaking journey!
Hey Michael
I just wanted to drop you a quick message to say how blown away I was by your short film "Welcome" . The storytelling was absolutely amazing, and the way you played the future AND PAST SCENE AND THE lighting throughout the film was just brilliant. Seriously, it added such depth and emotion to the scenes.
Keep up the fantastic work fingers crossed for a Uitdaging season 2!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Elizabeth, Appreciate it! Uitdaging Season 2 😏...
This African experience framed in a, consciously? accessible way to middle class 'free world' audiences, worked, drawing a deep, panhuman identification with this work. This fifty yr old pakeha(euro), New Zealander, raised in a time when apartheid was a huge social moral issue in NZ, it was a reminder to update my perceptions of SA, and offered another way of reading it, historical, cultural trauma. Ha! I win coming & going! Bitchin'!. Thankyou all involved! :-)
Appreciate the comment! Looking forward to sharing even more projects in the near future.

Beautiful work 🙏🏼🎬🙏🏼

The use of color here, in every scene agh man. How you captured the nostalgia with the sound effect of the conversations when the mother was there. It had this almost nostalgic feel to it. The composition (I don't know anything technical based) you made it easy on the eye.
The story though is one the stands true, I will where I can share this for it saved my life and I know alot more can be moved by it.
Thank you, honestly I did not know such existed here. Agh I'm excited.

What camera did you use?

Great sound design.
Thank you!
@@MichaelOdendaal great film
The story is great even though it could have and probably should have given a bit more insights into the activities of the past whether they were brutal (physical or sexual violence) to the protagonist, or not. Right now I'm just guessing that it could have been a brutal past but I'm not entirely sure about that. Apart from the above, it's an effective story. However, all the adult actors were completely and utterly miscast, which is a shame. I didn't believe any of them as parents or the grown up children of those parents, much less those actors as parents. It unfortunately made the story not to ring true at all, thinking that all the adult actors should look a lot more matured than these actors. Furthermore, rendering the entire film as a well-made student film.
This is truly spectacular!🤍🤌🏾
Appreciate the comment! Thanks for watching!
