  • DeWayne, KO4VNX, has some question about hotspots. He had bought a hotspot and learned that it work with talk groups but the radio has to be connected to the selected talk group. Watch to learn more about why this is.

Funny enough I have a ic 7100 with dstar and after the first few digital sounding contacts went back to FM for local contacts via the local repeater.

I tried DMR. Then found AllStar Link. Never going back to DMR. Why pay so much money to have such bad audio on DMR. ASL is analog, uses your existing radio, you can make your own node from parts bin junk and RPi. I wish ASL was promoted more. My node has been on line for 4 years and only had to reboot it once.

I agree. I’ve had two digital radios over the past decade and I’m ready to sell them at the next swap meet. I don’t like the way they sound, and hate the fact that I’d your not connected to a hotspot and internet dependent. It’s just not radio to me.

Nice description! However, it should be noted that if you already have a digital radio (preferably a base unit) you can try to hook on local nodes (there are a lot in most cities) so you do not necessarily need a hotspot of your own. 73!!

RFinder eliminates all that and gives you a phone and a DMR radio. You don’t need a repeater and can eat into a TG directly.

Thanks that information on digital, by the way I was able download a copy of a 2005 article in the ARRL that told me how to feed a multiband Moxon antenna.
Let me know if you want a copy.

We have dmr capable repeaters on 2 meter here. People assume you have to have a hotspot, and thats not the case.
