Hey, Matt. Serious question. I'm starting malazan (on my reread of gardens) but I tempted to read path to ascendancy before the book of the fallen. I've seen MANY people all over say its a good idea/bad idea, as things spoil things in both orders, what's your take? I'm reading all of malazan this year, mixing ICE books in while reading the erikson ones.
I always recommend reading the Erikson books first on an initial read, then the esslemont after. Not due to spoilers, but its just more enjoyable that way. The Ice books aren't as good. I love them, but they are different. They have many of the same characters written in a different way and it's jarring to mix up the books like that. I do think book 3 is the low point so far (I’m in bk 7), but you can judge the rest of the series probably by how book 2 felt for you and use that as your benchmark for if you want more of that or not.
So right about how Lightbringer started to go downhill at book 3. By the time I was in the middle of book 4 and having a slog of a time, I was pretty devastated since I had thought from books 1-2 that I had found a new all-time favorite. Alas, I don’t think Weeks is a good long-term plotter.
What twist do you mean with the blood mirror? It’s been awhile since I read the 4th and 5th book so I can’t remember. I really like the first 3, the second in particular, so I only reread those.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews ohhhhh yea ok. I honestly think I blocked that out, it was definitely a terrible decision by Brent Weeks. I think he just wanted some shock value but it didn’t work out very well
Mmmm seeing my fantasy read kist i see somthing. From 1983-2005 is full, but after has few books. The las original fantasy books i read were from 2003, the last ones were a pair of 2011 books from franchises started earlier. Wich 21 century books do u suggest me? I know tge first recommendation will be The faithful and fallen, and the next possibly The warrior angels, but none of those sre translated here. After the 2007 crisis, nit much modern fantasy books have been translated in my country.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews Thanks for the recomendations. I already read Ice&Fire, Dance of Dragons is on of the 2 most modern fantasy novels Ive read. Heheheh, seems Im getting too picky for fantasy. Malazan is LOONNG for my taste and a bit woke. Elderlings isnt easy to find here, the one I found has a very small letter, I hate pocket editions. Mistborn, I guess I have nothing against it. Stormlight is LOONG, and many say quality fell in book 4. But ey, I have it here, should try. First Law... having half of the trilogy waiting for something happening sounds bad, they too say its a character driven history, and I want worldbuilding and plot, not just characters, if I would only want to see people feelings I would watch Big Brother. Too is grimdark, in grimdark, I like the deviant morality sense and lot of bad things realistically happening, but I hate the "all is crap" view, life has both evil and joy. Is like Black Company? With Black company I was thinking always: Why they dont simply suicide and end their nonsensical lives? I talk too much? Thanks for the recomendations again.
Ups, I forgot to add, I was reading Half king of abercrombie and was entertaining. If his main novels are better, then should try First Law if I find it again.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews oh wait. The first parts of Elderlubgs, assassins and ships books are from the 90s. You refer to the continuatiobs of fools and dragons?

There are so many concepts that are explored and I dont even want to finish it because its just so full of thought provoking quotes. I guess it depends if you want to sit and think while you read. I enjoy stopping and processing what is happening. So many points of view. So much empathy in that book
The lost metal really made lose faith in the cosmere. I don’t plan to read any of the secret novels and will give Sanderson 1 more chance w Stormlight book 5.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews they are novels that comes from japan, I think the name comes from it's simplicity of writing in their original language. I got into reading books thanks to them. The aesthetic are misleading of how great and serious their stories are and their title tend to tell you the whole premise.
Best fantasy light novel would be Grimgar where normal people get transported to a fantasy world and they got to swim or sink, very realistic how normal people would behave

Happy to see the love for the new McClellan book! I’ll pick it up before bk 2 comes out
24:00 N76 I have that book in my BTR lol I want to read it hahahaha
It's really fun! Have you read the first one yet?
My favorite book this year was kings of the wyld.
Great book!
What twist do you mean with the blood mirror? It’s been awhile since I read the 4th and 5th book so I can’t remember. I really like the first 3, the second in particular, so I only reread those.
Without spoiling anything for others...the one where you find out what really happened to gavin
A Song of Ice and Fire
Malazan
Realm of the Elderlings
Mistborn
Stormlight Archive
The First Law
@@adamnesico Yes exactly.
I loved the first Murderbot, but have to say the second I just finished was a bit of a let down. I'll keep going, but I'm getting nervous. Still making my way through the video!
"I felt like the time was done" beep beep beep hahaha that was great!
I really need to read John Gwynne already, he's just all over your top reads! Totally agree on Jade City.
Wow, what a great video. I have the first Durfee book on Audible so this is jumping that series up so fast for me. I think I need to commit all the way to Hobb once I start Tawny Man and stay consistent with that series cause everyone keeps raving about that ending. I also got The Wandering Inn on audible so I'm looking forward to that, sounds right up my alley. Thanks again man, I know it was rough on your voice but it was such a great video!
Thanks for the kind words! And YES on Gwynne - read Shadow of the Gods, it's a good measuring stick to whether you will like his works or not.
And yea staying consistent on Hobb is a good call, just get ready for a couple weak books in the Rainwild Chronicles series.
I can't wait to hear your thoughts on Wandering Inn!
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews Oh man, your recommendation for WI has me dying to read it and completely throw out my whole TBR. Duly noted on Hobb and Gwynne. Looking forward to those so much.
I am astonished by your outlook on fifth season It is such a gripping book for me that essentially every page is just pure GOLD in book form. There are so many concepts that are explored and I dont even want to finish it because its just so full of thought provoking quotes. I guess it depends if you want to sit and think while you read. I enjoy stopping and processing what is happening. So many points of view. So much empathy in that book
Yeah just different tastes for different people! I'm glad it worked for you!
Absolute beast
Funnily, I was never a fan of Camelot saga or Arthur.
Caliban…? Hmm… I think Tad Williams wrote a Caliban book; called Caliban’s Hour.
Great video (:
Thanks James!
@Matt's Fantasy Book Reviews in so excited for you to keep reading the wandering inn! It just keeps getting better.
@@ColdfFlare I can't wait!
Did you take a nap after filming this? I would have. Lol
I always film late at night after my family goes to sleep. So yes...yes I did!
This is entertaining
Thanks Brian!
For the author of the book in last place. Hey, you were only one rank behind a novel that one a Hugo award.
I'm sorry but I loved when you ran out of time 😂 Great effort though. And great video as always
Thanks 😅
The lost metal really made lose faith in the cosmere. I don’t plan to read any of the secret novels and will give Sanderson 1 more chance w Stormlight book 5.
Yeah it's very frustrating. But I will say so far the first secret novel is quite good!
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews well that is reassuring! Im still w u on team hate Wayne tho lol
isn’t lonesome dove part of a trilogy or series ?
I don’t dare show my wife this video. She loves a lot of the 1 star books on this list. 😂
LOL!
Watch Matt not finish his sentences for 1 hour long 😂 crazy
LOL
😂😂😂
I can’t imagine how stressful this was lmao.
Yeah especially the first 1/3 of the video where my brain couldn't comprehend how short 30 seconds was.
117 books in one year!!!
It would take me 5 years for do that.
The faster i went was like 36 in one year.
Hiw u do that?
I just spend a lot of dedicated time reading each day - at least 3 hours a day. 1 hour before bed, 1 when I wake up, and 1 somewhere else.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews do you know how many wpm you can read?
@@coffeedude Honestly no idea. Sorry!
I just can't read fast enough to read that many books in a year. I feel if I try and force myself to read really fast I don't enjoy it
Yeah I don't read super fast, I just read A LOT
@Matt's Fantasy Book Reviews I don't blame you!
I'm 32 and only picked up reading a few years ago. I can't imagine not reading every day now!
Lonesome dove💪
💪
How come you don't read Light novels?
What do you mean by "light novels"? Does that mean shorter books, or does it mean more lighthearted books?
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews they are novels that comes from japan, I think the name comes from it's simplicity of writing in their original language. I got into reading books thanks to them. They tend to be around 200 pages of length and its were wandering inn got inspiration from, the homeland of isekai. The aesthetic are misleading of how great and serious their stories are and their title tend to tell you the whole premise.
Best fantasy light novel would be Grimgar where normal people get transported to a fantasy world and they got to swim or sink, very realistic how normal people would behave
They are some good book tubers that talk about them like @JustusRStone
@@sandroferrer9267 do you have any specific recommendation for what I should read first?
hhahahahaaha this video made me laugh A lot
My pain is your gain! Lol
this video is hilarious
Thanks!
Absolute king shit.
Thanks!
Goblin Emperor is way worse than all the books before it.
Yeah it really is horrible.
How do you read too many Books? wtf
I just read a lot each day. An hour when I wake up, an hour at lunch, and an hour before bed. Plus any driving I do audiobooks.
Did not like American Gods at all. Can't seem to think of a single redeeming quality, especially from someone as prolific as Neil Gaiman. TV show was even worse. I couldn't get further than the 2nd episode.
Okay, so there are at LEAST two of us!
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews Oh man, and I think I told you before how much I hate gratuitous sex scenes. There was one sex scene in particular that turned my stomach. 🤮
Nah, broken empire series was great
