- South Korea's most versatile writer-director, Bong Joon-ho, discusses how South Korean society has influenced their cinema.
A true cinephile at heart, his work boldly reflects his eclectic taste. From drama to genre, from fantasy to true crime (often with a layer of dark humour), films such as Memories of Murder, The Host, and Snowpiercer have garnered Bong Joon Ho a worldwide audience, with fellow auteurs Guillermo Del Toro and Quentin Tarantino ranking among his biggest fans. His most recent film, Okja, released by Netflix, created quite a stir in Cannes and ignited an important conversation in the industry around distribution strategies and Festival eligibility, all the while enchanting audiences. Tarantino once declared that "Bong Joon Ho is like Steven Spielberg in his prime," and luckily for us all, he has more stories to tell.

Korean movies are always hard-hitting and more towards the reality...just love them
In all the Korean movies i've seen (i've seen lots!) I can't recall any with happy "Hollywood endings"
@@NorthSea0il That's interesting point! I think it's because Koreans are culturally more attracted to ending that aches your heart.
@@lifeseek833 Exactly! which make sthem more unique :)
Bong Joon Ho is a genius and one of the best filmmakers
angry park-chan voices
The classical score throughout the second half of the video is from Park Chan Wook's incredible film Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, and the composer is Jo Yeong Wook.
no history in park's film
his voice is so soothing and so clear to my ear... it feels like what he means is directly transferred to my brain.
E.H.K Thats what ears do.
One of the few true geniuses of our time. I really love his style and admire his worldview.
All his films are great. 'Memories of Murder' is his best IMO.
genuinely I believe the best police procedural movie of all time. Emotionally resonates much more than its compared peer Zodiac
@@thomasyu3842 Madeo is my favorite
The murder caught yesterday
His weakest is snowpiercer
I regretted showing Memories of Murder to my family. They didn't like it. But I think it was his best, too. "Was" because I just saw another masterpiece, Parasite, which I now think is his best.
Im polish i love hes movies specially memories of murder Mother and Snowpiercer he remind me so much of polish filmmakers specially kieslowski

진짜로 멋있다
I remember the first time I watched his movie, the Host in 2006... I was horrified cuz I was living right next to the Han River.
@G F didn't he just explained why he was scared?
@G F The movie is about the monster than appears in the Han river. So I suppose he felt uncomfortable living next to the river after watching the movie.
G F Dude come on. Youre just trying to be a dick to this guy.
this is super cool!

korea’s one of the best gang movies
I hope you like it
it's mostly due to the justice system.
Law solves not much of problem especially related with higher-ups like Prosecutors or Jaebeol.
Those who with powers rule the law by money. Corruption grows wider and deeper generation by generation.
That's why there're ordinary people or gang-like characters face up either to the criminals or the system in Korea movie.
@Lu Up It might not be extreme in where you live. But in fact, it is true in South Korean society since the country went through so much chaos. Everything is chaos including politicians, people's minds, even their leisure times. There aren't many leisure hobbies in South Korea. Leisure is drinking lol. But I have to say it got better nowadays.
i love the guy, i love his movies but the poor dogs
