  • South Korea's most versatile writer-director, Bong Joon-ho, discusses how South Korean society has influenced their cinema.
A true cinephile at heart, his work boldly reflects his eclectic taste. From drama to genre, from fantasy to true crime (often with a layer of dark humour), films such as Memories of Murder, The Host, and Snowpiercer have garnered Bong Joon Ho a worldwide audience, with fellow auteurs Guillermo Del Toro and Quentin Tarantino ranking among his biggest fans. His most recent film, Okja, released by Netflix, created quite a stir in Cannes and ignited an important conversation in the industry around distribution strategies and Festival eligibility, all the while enchanting audiences. Tarantino once declared that "Bong Joon Ho is like Steven Spielberg in his prime," and luckily for us all, he has more stories to tell.
    Featuring clips from:
The Man From Nowhere (2010) - Lee Jung-beom
The City of Violence (2006) - dir. Ryoo Seung-wan
    New World (2013) - dir. Park Hoon-jung
    Friend (2001) - dir. Kwak Kyung-taek
Joint Security Area (2000) - dir. Park Chan-wook
    Mother (2009) - dir. Bong Joon-ho
Memories of Murder (2003) - dir. Bong Joon-ho
Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000) - dir. Bong Joon-ho

The classical score throughout the second half of the video is from Park Chan Wook's incredible film Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, and the composer is Jo Yeong Wook.

    6, Okja.

      2. Parasite
      3. Snowpiercer

      5. The Host
I haven't seen Okja and Barking Dogs. Eventhough I ranked The Host at the bottom, I still think it is fantastic movie

it's mostly due to the justice system.
Law solves not much of problem especially related with higher-ups like Prosecutors or Jaebeol.
Those who with powers rule the law by money. Corruption grows wider and deeper generation by generation.
That's why there're ordinary people or gang-like characters face up either to the criminals or the system in Korea movie.

@Lu Up It might not be extreme in where you live. But in fact, it is true in South Korean society since the country went through so much chaos. Everything is chaos including politicians, people's minds, even their leisure times. There aren't many leisure hobbies in South Korea. Leisure is drinking lol. But I have to say it got better nowadays.
