    I think people should take into account that Kel is a really sensitive and precious being with a very empathetic and emotional connection to music. She must be protected at all costs.
    I think it really hit me when we were at the Delain/Amorphis/Anneke show together and Amorphis was playing their set, all I could do to comfort her, covering her ears as well.(taking into account that she'd been missing Rich horribly and quite emotional considering the situation with Rich going to Jared's tribute, without going much into further detail), was to just hug her and let her go ahead and experience and release her emotions while I just simply sung to her and hugged her.
    That situation really sticks with me because I think back on some songs I asked you guys to review and I still feel so bad about asking for some songs, even though I didn't realize the depth in which Kel responds to certain things prior.
    You mentioned we all have our fair share of "stuff" .
    Kel, you really understand this more now than before, for sure.
    Kel and Rich, I'd really love to have you guys react to a song that reminds me so much of my late parents ❤️ Once Upon A Troubadour by Nightwish. Gosh I Miss my parents so very much but that song really reminds me of my parents and how very much they loved one another ❤️

    Kel… I’m 75. When I was 72, I rediscovered my love of hard rock through reaction channels. During the pandemic, I wanted to explore genres I had skipped over during my middle age. I found out I appreciate allot of grunge, metal, trip.’-hop. I too listened to it all, trying to stay open to all of it (except rap) so that I could learn. After three years I’ve come to the same conclusion: I don’t like constant growling, constant screaming, constant anger, even if many people do and think I would too if I only “ understood what they’re trying to achieve”. No. And I’m not going to try to convince myself any longer that I should.
    Kel, you and I had different starting points and different journeys but ended up with the same conclusion: we’ve explored the unknown, and now that we DO know, we’ve established our boundaries.

    • @Thanaeon
      @Thanaeon Год назад +5

      I write this not to try to persuade you to listen to something you don't like, but you mentioned not understanding what they were "trying to achieve". Now, this is not universal, and probably often not the intention, but paradoxically I often find the aggrressive growling and screaming and heaviness relaxing. That roaring wall of sound and passionate vocal expression feels cathartic to me and cleanses me. It's like it flows through me and takes all the negative emotions with it as it passes, leaving me feeling simultaneously relaxed and energised.

    • @helenespaulding7562
      @helenespaulding7562 Год назад +4

      @@Thanaeon that’s really cool! Thanks for the comment. You are wired differently from me for sure! For me, the energy gets stuck inside me and makes me feel agitated, nervous snd anxious. Interestingly, I found I could listen to and enjoy some metal and really heavy rock much better when I watch a live performance. For some reason, when I watch the music being performed , the frenetic energy gets more dissipated and passes through me instead of getting stuck. For some metal and rock genres, such as speed metal, even this doesn’t work. Part is age. As you get older , it is easier to get agitated. But it’s also personal taste. Even in my teens, I wasn’t fond of high BPM’s. For instance, Zeppelin is my favorite band, but I never liked Communication Breakdown.
      Regarding what they’re trying to achieve: even after I knew what what was being portrayed, I still could not enjoy it. The music might have gained my respect, but not my liking of it. Pantera might be loved by many but it’s not my bag. I DO like Tool…..ALLOT……but can only listen to 2-3 songs in a row as it’s pretty intense.
      Thanks again for sharing your thoughts! I enjoyed it!

    • @pietrayday9915
      @pietrayday9915 Год назад +1

      I think that for me, I always appreciate it when people who don't actually "get" the music I like, do at least try to understand it, and are willing to ask what I hear in it.
      For my part, I think the more extreme kinds of hard rock and heavy metal work best as exercises in contrast: I couldn't listen to songs that stay either light and pretty or dark and gritty all the way through for very long, without something else in there for contrast. Even the darkest and grittiest death metal albums in my collection work best when they break up the speed, noise, and aggression with a little space and atmosphere, some moody acoustic guitars or synthesizers here and there, some melodic twists and turns, some "clean" vocals or whispers, and so on.
      I do find periods of depression tend for me to be shorter and more tolerable to ride down to the bottom, with anything afterward being a step up from there - I think that's the effect that helps the "doom" metal genre work for its fans, and it works that way for me, but doom and especially gothic doom also have a tendency to mix in classical elements, space and atmosphere, and so on for a lot of the sort of texture I like.
      Listening to Kel's reasoning for having some trouble with darker subject matter makes sense to me: I've had a relatively easy life in the general scheme of things, but even I think the darker subjects are better approached from a certain amount of distance, such as through (literary) fantasy - I'm a long-time fan of horror movies and so on, I think I prefer monster movies or haunted house stories (for example) over, say, serial killers and true crime for at least partly that reason of distance. The sorts of extreme metal that tend toward a literary distance from horror subjects - say, gothic, occult, or Lovecraftian horror - appeal to me a bit more than the ones that aim toward more realistic pain and suffering, like songs about the atrocities of real-life dictators and killers.
      I think that's where my taste in music was really forged: growing up with a family of horror fans who also listened to hard rock, the avant-garde soundtracks of horror movies seemed to me a natural fit against the hard rock and psychedelic rock my parents listened to, and I think all together the whole thing was a continuum of things that I enjoyed in a fairly happy childhood. A lot of the more extreme metal tends to scratch that itch.
      Anyway, I think I'm in a position as an extreme music fan with those tastes and that background where I can definitely understand where people who like something more extreme are coming from, and at the same time understand where people who try the more extreme stuff in good faith but simply find the experience to be a "bad trip" are also coming from.

    • @Thanaeon
      @Thanaeon Год назад +1

      @@pietrayday9915 That sounds a lot like me. Some details are a bit different, but yeah, I recognise myself a lot in that. I find myself hit harder by depictions of banal everyday suffering than I do more extreme stuff, likely at least partly because of the distance you talk about.
      I'm also a fan of contrasts in everything I consume; music, food, art, stories, whatever. Which is why pure death metal isn't to my taste, but there's a lot of melodeath that works great.

    • @w.geoffreyspaulding6588

      I’ve heard there are “hundreds” of metal sub-genres. That seems crazy to me…It would seem a dozen would do. But then you speak of “mellowdeath “ as a sub-genre. Now I understand. There’s a separate niche fir every nuance. I’m glad that classic rock didn’t go THAT far! 😉✌️

    Pain and suffering is just as meaningful as love and pleasure. The beauty of music is the way we relate to certain songs and share similar experiences or mold the lyrics to our own experiences. It's meant to be emotional.

Rich, you've done a great job!

    Hi Kel N' Rich ~ Kel, thank you for expressing yourself so precisely. You are free to do whatever you want to do, and that definitely includes not listening to certain music. One of the things I teach my counseling clients is what I call the Criteria. It involves three questions. Does it work for you, does it feel good and are you okay with the consequences? This applies to everything and absolutely does for you, in dealing with music. Some will not work for you, doesn't feel good and the consequences basically suck, as you described. It's wonderful that you are able (because some people are not for various reasons) to express that and have Rich filter out those songs that aren't going to work for you. Rich, I appreciate you telling us your experience of this song, and how you feel about it and your interpretation of what it means for you. The combination of you both is what makes this channel work and work damn well. It's always a joy to watch each reaction and to hear what Kel thinks of each song. I said it in one of the other return videos, but I'm gonna say it again. I am VERY happy to see you both back on youtube! ❤

    I’m not sure if you guys watched the intro privately…
    He talks about the fact that it’s a very difficult song for him to sing, and he’s going to need some help, intimating that the audience should sing along to give him the strength he needs to get through the performance.
    If it brings you down, and that’s not what you want, it’s not for you. All aspects of music resonate with different people differently, and that’s 100% fine.

Always a delight to see you Kel and Rich especially when enjoying some of my fave tunes like blood brothers and infinite dreams by Iron Maiden. Hope you two are doing great and have a wonderful day.
    P.s. i loved how Kel spoke up and explained her thoughts and feelings. Totally and extremely rational and understandable. Much like movies, video games, books and such, music can be a form of escapism. If someone has experienced pain or suffering or any number of life's difficulties then it makes perfect sense to want to hear some beautiful uplifting, hopeful and happy music for sure. I agree. While I do enjoy myself many aspects of metal, I can't get behind the screaming and growls and all the angry, ultra heavy. I can appreciate the musicianship but I would much prefer to listen to Iron Maiden or Nightwish or Metallica or numerous other bands that while may not be as heavy per say, still very much provide that wonderful musical outlet. Also I cant really stand Bieber either regardless of any talents he has. Unfortunately he's from my country 😕 and we can't just deport him to somewhere else haha.

      Hello Jaim,
      Thanks for your comment but just to clarify things here, we don’t have customers here on our RUclips channel.
      We don’t sell anything and we don’t make any money because RUclips sends the money from the ads to the bands/artists. It’s all copyrighted music and clips used here. It’s not ours so we don’t get the cash.
      We do this for the love of the music, each other, for the fun of it, and for our fellow humans.
      It’s good to be skeptical in life, but those are our true motivations here dude, nothing else.
      Hope that helps.

    Bieber's songs are amazing... when done by other artists. I get it, I do. As soon as a Bieber song comes out and it's a world hit of a banger, first thing i go look for are covers/remixes/etc because there is just something about him singing it that I can't do. The exact same thing with mentioned Taylor Swift. Where differ is, I too and am Empath, and it is strong as hell. My feeling that makes it different is, I need to hear those other things because to me, I NEED to feel what they felt, I need to understand where they came from. In this case, I'm more like Rich. The past doesn't bother me, it makes me better to remind me where I have been and how far I've come. Hardly is there anything negative.
    I think you need a "Sampling with Kel" segment for those that may *tank* and have several different songs when you go to do said segment, knowing it may bust. Listening to bits of many songs, Sampling is appropriate. Also, there are bands who use screams and growls artistically, and they do it well. I'm not into basic scream and yelling, but there are artistic ones out there.

Those same songs I go too, to bring out that emotion to help me process and know I am not the only one that feels this way. Sarah McLaughlin - Angel and Trent Reznor - Something I Can Never Have are those songs. Then I follow it up with Metallica Fight Fire With Fire!! or FFDP - Wash It All Away!!!

    While musical tastes and influence evolve, someone shouldn't have to fight their way through a song or "endure" music. There's plenty of music I won't listen to, even though I consider myself very broad musically - and even from genre's I like there are times when I get put off for a variety of reasons. Thanks Kel and Rich - I do think you should edit what you play based on whatever the hell you want - doesn't matter what people request. I'll suggest instead of going deep into metal or whatever, do that, but also expand laterally into other horizons - there's plenty of cool stuff out there that isn't Taylor Swift or Bieber.

    I will say when I saw your reaction to Cradle of Filth, I thought it might be too soon. I understand you have your limits and those of us who do love the more extreme side of metal shouldn't hold it against you. I'll admit you have to chew on some bands before you're able to swallow them. I will also say that with your limitations it will significantly impact a large portion of metal music. I do think the idea of you bowing out of you can't handle a song while Rich continues might be an idea to consider. Then he can explain the song and you can react to his reaction.
