This game makes you work so hard, and do so much for so little. I'll never understand it's appeal. I know it's popular, and I know people love it, but to me it's one of the bottom 10 MMORPGs.
classic ffxi had some of the best and wildest loot in any mmorpg - every piece is unique and dramatically changes your capabilities as a player in a specific class. The feeling of winning a piece of loot that is so saught after, after months or years of farming and camping is extremely unique to this game, and there will never be anything like it. Forever. Looking back, I wouldn't be able to do this again. But I will never regret the time I spent with friends on my server (unicorn). had an absolute blast for 7 years, and had most of the high end gear with exceptions like kraken club or speed belt. Some of my most cherished memories are in this game and it is the reason who I am today. Learned a lot. Struggled and raged a lot. But also cried tears of joy and made many friends that I still connect with to this day. When you say "do so much for so little", I have no idea what you mean. FFXI's loot, rewards, activities and things to do are endless. You literally login and can't decide on what to do because there's so much to do. As for the appeal, think of it like dark souls but as an MMO. Everything is extremely difficult to do and requires help from other players. If you feel, you'll be punished and hard. But when you do win and when you do get loot, it feels euophoric. On that note, the guy in the video is a redmage who is soloing a boss that drops endgame loot. This cannot be soloed by any other job except RDM (back then). So it was and still is impressive. But it requires loot that changes and enhances the capabilities of a redmage. Redmages can also tank, which was an absurd idea at the time, but it was extremely effective. TLDR; the game was awesome because of its rewards and systems, and clearly you haven't played it, or played it enough
i LOVE that people still play XI this was a huge part of my life and some of my fondest memories took place on this game amongst friends
