You can just remove the frets then play the micro tones, will sound awesome, plus you will see the old color of where the frets where so you can be guided and jus place your fingers dead center between 2 lines to get the quarter tone, so this will guide you pretty well - i did that on my OUD when i was first learning, I used a ruler to draw lines on the notes, and this really like gets your muscle memory going at the start
Nothing against you man , but Me" as an Arab who plays oud and guitar" can tell this is not Saba at all, Saba can't be played but can be approximated and thus transitions to other similar scale called Saba Zamzam which can be played easily on the guitar without quarter notes, if you want to start at E it will be like this : E F G G# B C D E , it has the most sad melody at first but when you go down with it, it has "Ajam" Major chord as in C M after the Em u can listen to "Do you love me " old song it has Saba zamzam scale with some major licks in between an then change the key and mode into Major and back into saba, so the F# is not that good in this video even if its approximated, as the F# note makes abit more like Hijaz Kar or Double harmonic minor scale. anyhow Good job the improvisations were good.
To approximate the maqam Saba, the Saba Zamzam is what jumped to my mind as well, I have a maqam Saba Zamzam jams on my channel, maybe you might like to check them out... cheers
I love these scales. Thanks so much. Ever since watching daffy duck in Baghdad, this eastern music has really gripped me. So many different emotions in just one or two notes... But... You can bend to reach the microtones? Sure, it takes a lot of practice, but hey, what's music all about...
People usully harmonize this with the major root chord WITHOUT playing the 3rd so only the root and fifth Key. So if u r playing Saba in D then you can harmonize it with D Major but only playing the 1st and 5th because even though the 3rd which is F# in the D Major is actually INSIDE the D saba scale, however, since the Saba scale just before the F# has F and Eb/2 (E quartor tone) these clash in a rele bad way with F# - plus holding a D Major triad gives a very popular happy feeling which will go against the Saba feeling.
Microtones don't work well with chords. I mean if you wanted to build triads out of the saba scale you could. It's just not done much cause it doesn't sound good. If you really want to play chords over microtonal scales it's better to just build the chords that don't include the microtones.
A better translation of maqam Saba would be E - E# - G - G# The spelling I used reflects how you would harmonize each tone. For instance E makes a major third with G# and E# makes a minor third with G# and if you harmonize it as such you will get the Saba feel even though you're playing it in 12-tone equal temperament.
is their any way to harmonize any of these scales to have chords from them? or do u like use minor chord progressions and add the melody from a particular scale say hijaz or something?
It's wrong man Instead of f# you have to play f And this is scale about tragedy You will feel the sadnes when you play it like that So it is this way : E-F-G-Ab etc.......

Then you're both pretty fucking stupid. He said it wasn't the true saga in the opening of the video.
Watch shit before you speak.

Thanks Murat - this is the fist vid of yours I watch: thanks very much!
saolasin=)
Is anyone thinking about an G# major chord that can go with this? Em-G-G#-G-D-E. Many Greek songs use that G sharp major chord. It really pops.
Could you please tell me what chord could we play with the second note of Saba scale, the real half flat one??
Microtones don't work well with chords. I mean if you wanted to build triads out of the saba scale you could. It's just not done much cause it doesn't sound good. If you really want to play chords over microtonal scales it's better to just build the chords that don't include the microtones.

Do you want to give me private lessons?
I need to learn this scale and the hijaz.
You are a wonderful player.
is their any way to harmonize any of these scales to have chords from them? or do u like use minor chord progressions and add the melody from a particular scale say hijaz or something?
How about Em->D->G->bA->G->D->Em ?
I thought that a quarter note is micro-tonal - but you could make a video yourself to show us?
Yes, a quarter note is microtonal, don't listen to Karim=)
It's not micro note as you said. It's quarter note. Get a fretless instrument, you'll get it right.
It's wrong man
Instead of f# you have to play f
And this is scale about tragedy
You will feel the sadnes when you play it like that
So it is this way :
E-F-G-Ab etc.......
sorry to tell you that but you all wrong
saba scale (maqam saba) notes is D Eb F Gb A Bb C D starts from D string
