The Jukebox came out swinging! They IMMEDIATELY took control of the flow of the event. It had a massive impact on the crowd and the opposing band! The Boom was forced out of their comfort zone because the Jukebox set the standard right away! When introducing one's self, one should speak loud, clearly and with PURPOSE! Props to the SU band staff. Those guys get it.
The absolute best i have heard JSU sound since the late 90's early 2000's, the balance, clarity, volume and arrangements was so on point. I can't say anything negative about there performance, Im a fan. Southern: one word "MONSTERS" they offered everything JSU did, but in my opinion what put them on top is song selection at the correct intervals of the contest(I know they had home field), another thing is, When Southern plays, I feel the music in my soul, my bones, my heart. I just don't get that same feeling wen JSU plays.. Jstate music sounds typical now apposed to the late 90's wen there style and sound was distinctive.. That's one thing I can say about Southern, they are true to there heritage, tradition and culture, I love that, that's everything in my eyes... Southern with the "W"but Jstate didn't take an "L" this night....
From a musician stand point, both bands are great in their own right. I must say I was expecting more from JSU than we received. I have experience them bring it before but they seem a bit off. Not saying that the Human Jukebox didn't have any mistakes but JSU..."what happened?" I'm a true SU alum and was informing many of how JSU tends to bring it, but not last night. I take my hat off to my fellow Jaguars. YOU ALL DID THE DAMN THING! You all truly made me proud! You all brought back so many memories. I swear I could see a stand coming at my headwhile in the band room practicing "Soon As I Get Home," because I sung the wrong note. LMTO! Looking forward to the next one.
Two of THE most entertaining bands that I've ever seen or heard!! BLACK MAGIC!!! I really don't wanna pick but since it was a battle.. slight advantage to SU..there's just something a little more extra special about them!!!
Damn! SU went in from jump and never got out of JSU! We are the Floyd Mayweather of bands....many haters but still undefeated. A person that can't hear can feel SU! We are the GOLD standard! Nothing compares
I'm a SU fan for life and will always be they my babies but people really need to just stop hating on the bands It doesn't matter which band is playing or any band they just young kids trying to have fun with each other just in enjoy all the bands they all have different styles in playing that's it
I think both bands need to clean it up for Oct. 15th. Both had high and low moments and nobody can dispute that. This was great for a botb ... I have higher expectations for both at the actual game.
I absolutely agree, you have stated that well... I was very entertained, but from a musician's standpoint, there is work needed by both bands... Loud does not equal good... I am definitely look forward to Oct. 15th
I was kinda shocked that they came with a march for the first song at "crank fest", but outside of that and the bad count off on the Kanye song, this battle was pretty even.
Lee Jr bruh there is nothing even about this. Put the Beats on or something cause I don't hear anything even... and I'm trying. Other than 1 song that JSU that the felt they had to play the end part twice that was it. JSU did nothing to excite the crowd at all or shock you. All the songs they played they been playing all year and they sounded better playing em at the games vs tonight. SUexcites and shocks. Just listen to the fans reaction. Nothing even about that. And I like JSTate but they just not in the echelon that the S is in...Tell me what was even???
Lee Jr I agree . THATS what I've been telling MFs. This was pretty even. Both had some pos and neg. but these two schools r the most passionate about themselves more than any other hbcu so u can expect each to not really give credit
OMG . Southern came in there like, B**** we got it on our mind, wtf is poppin witcha.. Not gone lie.. after SU intro, then that 1st song. if i was JSU i would have been like, Shit wtf did we just get ourselves into? Fellaz,. let's try to make it outta here alive.
The fanfare and 1st song that SU played, was more about the crowds reaction that made it crunk... The "Lift Every Voice" Fanfare is an old piece, which was resurrected on time, in the height of the pro-black/black lives matter movement... Therefore, any band would have received house for playing that song/anthem... The rap tune after, I was trying to figure out what it was... Yes, it definitely had power, but the trombones and Tubas were so out of tune; that caught my attention more than the overall song itself.
I'll take the booms version... SU is all power and no melody & that takes away from how the song is suppose to sound. They're human jukebox .... their version is a noisemaker compared to Jacksons...
Dallas Edwards this the funniest comment ever! Even with JSU fuck up that arrangement is the best played by any band! SU arrangement is boring the only ok part is the end of the song! 😂
Your opinion. Loud does not mean better. Where are the dynamics as well as balance. Everyone is trying to out blow each other. No tone quality at all from either band. Please check out BCU for tone quality even though their play book is one to be desire.
I think all botb should have at least 3 to 4 marches in it! I miss Southern purple Carnival! One good March will separate the wheat from the chaff! All DAY!
Jackson was not outstanding and please do not bring home field advantage into the equation. Crowd reaction doesn't lie. Jackson was outplayed, outmatched, and out arranged. Their arrangements lack substance and technicality.
2016-2017 JSU is coming from SU at that game. They did good and sound on par with SU now! I would have do the battle a bit diffrently and saved scared of the dark for later especially with the go home chant and the perfect oppurtunity to turn and crank on them. Its the most SU-like song they have and would have been great to throw at them..missed opportunity. other then that THRY BOTH HAVE POWER AND SOUND GREAT THIS SEASON!
I'm proud of my school I thought Doc was going to look at it like any ole other battle of the bands you pulled through for me 😁😁😁Luv Da Boom SU I love y'all so that first song stupid my 2 favorite schools get it dani
JSU slayed I'm a Su fan but JSU did they thing y'all need to give credit when it's due... Su slammed the first song but JSU came hard with the next selection props to both band directors job well done because the talladega vs miles battle was a sleep fest
JSU was true to the signature and original composition of every song they played, and the dynamics were on point... I live for SU's intensity, but half the songs that they played were blasted so loudly, that you could not tell whom had the melody, which part was which, and what the song was period... There was no balance per the sections... Mellos blasting on the baritones, trumpets screaming to be heard, trombones flat, no hope for the tubas at all.
JSU can't come out "pillow soft" against their arch-rival in a band battle! JSU's band director set the Boom up for a "First Round Knockout", and SU threw the Hay-maker! He will learn!!
I am Morris brown alumni so I'm neutral... I must say I like su but jsu BEASTIN!!! The clarity is amazing.. Su strong but my opinion it wasn't good enough too just blow jsu out the stadium like they all said they would...💯
SU band could have been pissing in buckets and SU fans would still say they killed JSU. You are right, they are very delusional... Clearly, they do not know the difference between power and being loud.
+Dejohn Oliver jsu is a loud band bt there only downfall are their arrangements and that's comin from a southern fan bt yeaaa they didn't last past this first clip
umm jsu strongest section was Trombones... plus they need to work on choosing better song selections and better arrangements... Sorry but jsu got that fire L
Derrick Bowie... How so????... See most these comments against JSU are just reaching; especially from those that like SU's band selections and arrangements... Your comment is very inaccurate, though your viewpoint, just like mine.
Lawd, people still don't understand the purpose of the mics being placed in front of the bands... Both JSU/SU have media teams that record their and other bands... The mics that are setup in front of the bands, are capturing the audio sound as the bands are playing. The mics are not hook to any form of output speakers. Now, if there is an overall PA system within the venue, that the venue uses, then the overall sound will bounce off that system and speakers... Both media teams will also employ the use of "grips", which is an audio capturing device that is held by hand, and used during movement as the sound travels; meaning when the band is in motion.
If I were JSU I would have stuck to the marches for at least a couple more rounds, then bust out with the power song after SU plays a march which the undoubtedly would have done....I believe anyway......Instead they got excited and went directly to their newest power song, one of Southerns traditional songs I might add.....
Su had better tone, they where obviously louder, their arrangements are better , and Jsu couldn't keep tempo the whole night. Su's trumpets killed Jsu's 😂 and the song selection for Jackson was sub par... They may seem hard to judge but if you put away your pride and actually listen, it wouldn't be hard to determine a winner. Better luck next time Jackson, much love to y'all but southern has it this time.
You can't out Southern, Southern lol. JSU tubas are nasty, but whatever happened to the JSU style of play. I know they started this a few years back, but I guess of you can't beat them, join them. I guess FAMU and Southern the only two that stay true to their style
Actually not true, SU is not the same as years back when they use to play "Can you feel it". No way in hell. Not going to debate this but SU is no where near the same SU.
Both of these Bands are Blowing on each other they both Sound Dope af to me No lie it was songs SU sounded Better on and It was Songs JSU sounded better on
The Jukebox came out swinging! They IMMEDIATELY took control of the flow of the event. It had a massive impact on the crowd and the opposing band! That "Tourist" Song Pretty Much Did It For Me😎
I'm glad SU played "Sucker For Pain". They are who I had in mind to play it...great job!
Dayum, did SU just hit Lift Every Voice fanfare on them?! I haven't heard that joint since I heard SU crank that joint on Famu in 93! killed it!
Southern's introduction set the tone. All six feet of my body got chills.
The absolute best i have heard JSU sound since the late 90's early 2000's, the balance, clarity, volume and arrangements was so on point. yea JSU ain't no hoe... both are great
From a musician stand point, both bands are great in their own right. I must say I was expecting more from JSU than we received. I have experience them bring it before but they seem a bit off. accidental comment,no comment, can't pick a favorite from these two powerhouses!
Damn! SU went in from jump and never got out of JSU! We are the Floyd Mayweather of bands....many haters but still undefeated. A person that can't hear can feel SU! We are the GOLD standard! Nothing compares

That tourist song sounds like it's the end of the world 🌏🔥

+Dontrell Hickbottom they song after surgery played lift ever voice
+Dontrell Hickbottom sure first song
I think both bands need to clean it up for Oct. 15th. Both had high and low moments and nobody can dispute that. This was great for a botb ... I have higher expectations for both at the actual game.
David Johnson I totally agree with you...in my opinion no band took the WIN...
I absolutely agree, you have stated that well... I was very entertained, but from a musician's standpoint, there is work needed by both bands... Loud does not equal good... I am definitely look forward to Oct. 15th
I actually Lowkey didnt want to click on this because I wanted to save the magic for Oct 15...
I think it's safe to say that those new euphoniums at Southern are officially broken in.
I was kinda shocked that they came with a march for the first song at "crank fest", but outside of that and the bad count off on the Kanye song, this battle was pretty even.
Lee Jr right pretty even to me
Lee Jr bruh there is nothing even about this. Put the Beats on or something cause I don't hear anything even... and I'm trying. Other than 1 song that JSU that the felt they had to play the end part twice that was it. JSU did nothing to excite the crowd at all or shock you. No contest SU buried them Tonight!
JSU need to work on having a clean sound!!!
Lee Jr I agree . THATS what I've been telling MFs. This was pretty even. Both had some pos and neg. but these two schools r the most passionate about themselves more than any other hbcu so u can expect each to not really give credit
lmao su cut straight to the chase no march music
SU squad please stand up 🙋🏽♂️💙💛
The Crowds reaction too Su says it all
OMG . Southern came in there like, B**** we got it on our mind, wtf is poppin witcha.. Not gone lie.. after SU intro, then that 1st song. if i was JSU i would have been like, Shit wtf did we just get ourselves into? Fellaz,. let's try to make it outta here alive.
Lol ikr

nah, Bama State played it last week... with that being said........ SU the first marching band to sound good playing it... lol...
NaJocquin McCoy lol right
Listen, that "Father Stretch my hands" battle was 2013's "Holy Grail" battle all over again. Roles just reversed lol.
I hope this puts that Father stretch battle to bed. JSU version clearly can't even come close to touching SU version.
then jsu fuck up lol
Dallas Edwards jsu version slays su
Dallas Edwards just because they messed up doesn't mean that SU version is better than JSU because SUs version doesn't even sound like the song
Imagine how its gonna be when these 2 MONSTERS face off again in Jackson a week from this coming Saturday!

JSU played TI's King Back @ 8:15 lol. Only band I heard play that was us (Bama State) 07 I think it was.
The Humanjukebox sent the Boom back to Lynch street.
We left some boats for SU tho..you know just in case they need to get Jack town before the floods come back......lol...j/s
OMG that Mega slip up tho... JSU
All on the director and tempo. Not the people playing. That recovery was great
at the end of the day SU is ranked #2 out of all college bands in the country only second to OSU so i guess that means they're #1 in HBCUS
LOL 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂OSU! OSU plays with no soul or feeling.
Your opinion. Loud does not mean better. Where are the dynamics as well as balance. Everyone is trying to out blow each other. No tone quality at all from either band. Please check out BCU for tone quality even though their play book is one to be desire.
BCU was not impressive at all in Charlotte, NC. BCU is far from a standard to be admired.
shawn lee SU is the best in the land.white folks gotta make themselves number 1. Both SU and JSU better than OSU, USC etc
LOL... Dee Madison! SU Still have better tone and and control. But still good luck with that!
you never start over while playing a song that's a big no no
that lost it for me! hard to bounce back from that
terrel you right that was so embarrassed i was seating on jsu side the fans was stunned it was to funny😂
Thats funny i was rolling whenever js poo started off with a march n Southern just started smashing off rip
I think all botb should have at least 3 to 4 marches in it! I miss Southern purple Carnival! One good March will separate the wheat from the chaff! All DAY!
S Alexander i agree but I could see if it was the game thats what we do whenever we warming up but its a botb you gotta bring heat on that first song
Lol
I love southern
that tourist and joyful joyful by southern was the game changer and put Jsu to bed southern is the Truth!!!!
Jackson was outstanding. At the end of the day SU had home field advantage at the end of the day.... boom had some great arrangements...
JSU sounded like shit
Jackson was not outstanding and please do not bring home field advantage into the equation. Crowd reaction doesn't lie. Jackson was outplayed, outmatched, and out arranged. Their arrangements lack substance and technicality.
2016-2017 JSU is coming from SU at that game. They did good and sound on par with SU now! Still my favorite battle su baby
JSU slayed I'm a Su fan but JSU did they thing y'all need to give credit when it's due... Su slammed the first song but JSU came hard with the next selection props to both band directors job well done because the talladega vs miles battle was a sleep fest

i was there sooooo yeah ,,,saying SU smashed JSU is a flatout lie ...
lol ok mommas wrong again.
SU ALL DAY JS WHO

I am Morris brown alumni so I'm neutral... I must say I like su but jsu BEASTIN!!! The clarity is amazing.. Su strong but my opinion it wasn't good enough too just blow jsu out the stadium like they all said they would...💯

Su fans are delusional jsu got the power !! This was a good battle !
Knowles Carter I agree
Even the MIC'S can't catch J-STATE TRUMPET SECTION. #PAPERTHIN
