Remember when they did this in the 70s 80s especially in Holden's that pissy little 4 in the LX Torana with that annoying carb you put the foot down and didn't go any faster
It’s the transmission that’s better for a lot of applications, not the engine. Everyone goes on about the 2.8 vs the 4.5 but the difference is really the transmission. Put a 6 speed auto behind the v8 and ,,,, But I like my 5 speed manual in the bush.
I’d go back to my 1HZ coil spring front troopy. But that’s not going to happen so might as well accept that the 2.8 is it. Currently own a v8 troopy and I really don’t think it’s that special
@ it’s not that I’m not enjoying it, it’s more the location of the alternator, the added complexity of a turbo engine, a flat panel filter vs a cylindrical one. Paper filter elements vs spin on metal filters . No advantage in fuel consumption for some gains in performance , wider front track , which I’ve corrected with a trutrack. I’m a rusted on Toyota owner but I’m not at all impressed with the VDJ
This a common fault with a 2.8 and Toyota will warrant the repair. Not a big deal some people don’t even bother fixing it. Still impressed with the 2.8s
I took my 2023 sr5 in to suss out the noise. They kept car over night did a cold start in the morning. If it last longer then 30 seconds on cold start or if it’s constant at idling that’s when they replace it. Mine goes away after 5 seconds. The service manager and the boys told me yes they can get noisy timing chains and they replaced quite a few but no one has ever seen the timing chain go bang yet. It’s just a 2.8 thing diesel things.
It’s just the lower chain (not the main one) has an oil pressure fed tensioner. It’s just not tensioned tight before the oil pressure picks up. More of a sound than a big issue
Take it to the dealer inside 5k of the waranty expiration to maximise the overall value. This assumes it remains a light rattle on startup and doesn't worsen.
Very common with 1GDs. We've been through atleast 3-4 different bulitins in NZ on hiluxs, prados etc. Lucky im pretty sure the 70 doesn't have the balance shafts like hiace and prado that grenade the motor. So far Toyota NZ have experimented with billet sprockets instead of cintered metal, different gear profiles etc. But they still seem to rattle, especially with long service intervals. The chains do stretch and tend to bow out. Haven't seen anything related to the 70 specifically, Toyota might look at it depends if your local guy is friendly
Im looking forward to this 4 banger review. Im not one bit surprised I hope you have secretly stored your old V8 somewhere. These 2.8L simply cannot handle what blokes do with these trucks.

U can buy a 2.8 manual now. No one’s done a comparison test yet of real world driving between the two
Mate people who think the 2.8 is better than the v8 are delusional. Even the v8 diesel in the 200 is better than the v6 in the 300
