    The player becoming a goalie was because the Gotham team's goal keeper (Mandy Haught) received a red card for a hand ball outside of the box, which means she was kicked off of the field. If a player leaves the field due to a red card, the team is not allowed to sub in another player for them and they must play down a player on the field. However, they could sub the backup goalkeeper for one of the other players on the field as long as they are still down a player and the player who received the red is off the field, but Gotham had already used up all 5 of their subs so they couldn't
    Also, there are hydration breaks in soccer if the temperature is high enough, and each team is allowed 5 subs total for the game. Half time is 15 minutes. There are also short breaks whenever there are injuries on the field.

      Also the goalie swap happened with only about 45 seconds left of play time. It was stressful I'm sure but not like she had to play goal for that long.

    soccer games do have breaks- its divided into 45 minute halfs. and subbing isnt that uncommon you do it when the ball goes out of bounds like during throw ins, corner kicks, ect

    • @kohlinoor
      @kohlinoor 3 месяца назад +7

      Swapping who takes a corner/throw-in isn't necessarily subbing; people don't normally come off the bench to do it, though it can happen. Subbing is specifically replacing someone on the field with someone on the bench (using the board with the the neon numbers). It's common in that it happens every game, though only 3-5 times depending on the league/federation's rules.

    • @astrid4203

      @@kohlinoor i wasnt talking about swapping who takes it. u can sub when the ball goes out.. aka throw ins. u just have someone waiting at the half line for whenever it does. different orgs might have different rules but its definitely a thing

    This video is such a weird capsule of US sports culture. Forgetting about men's soccer would be impossible practically anywhere outside the US, except maybe those weird rugby countries (Australia, India, South Africa, etc) and the baseball islands (Dominican Republic, Cuba). You can dislike it, but it's pretty much inescapable, like HPV. And seeing local championships as somehow counting more than Olympic medals, confederation championships AND multiple world championships? Very exotic.

    Its so weird hearing Gabe forgot about men playing football. But then i remember that women's football is more popular in the US. Here in europe (Scotland!), while the networks try, mens football is really the only show in town, and of course is the biggest sport in the world.

    • @1MPUL5IVE
      @1MPUL5IVE 3 месяца назад +1

      Men’s football is still more popular in the U.S. by a mile. The NWSL is no where near the MLS in terms of budget or popularity.

    • @W4TSKY
      @W4TSKY 3 месяца назад +1

      @@1MPUL5IVE that’s true when it comes to leagues, but most people in the US don’t watch soccer. if they do it’s the national team and the women’s national team is much bigger than the men’s because they’ve actually won a bunch of stuff. Most people in the US know who Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan or Hope Solo is whether they watch soccer or not, but not Landon Donovan, Christian Pulisic or Tim Howard…

    • @1MPUL5IVE
      @1MPUL5IVE 3 месяца назад

      @@W4TSKY I do agree that the national team is more popular than club football in the U.S. The men’s national team is still far more popular though in terms of actual attendance. More people talk about the women’s national team, but that’s because there’s always drama surrounding it. Rapinoe was in the news because of her support in the LGBTQ community and demanding equal pay (Not because of her skills in football). People know Alex Morgan because of her beauty (Not because of the sport). Hope Solo was only known because certain “pictures” got leaked (again not because of the sport). In terms of attendance, the men’s national team, has always had more turnout, hence why the women’s national team never had the same budget and why they were getting paid far less. They just weren’t as popular when it came to actual marketing because although people talked about them, no one actually bought a ticket to go support them.

      @@JustBetweenUs The juiciest one is the Caitlin Foord and Katie McCabe drama:
      Caitlin Foord and Lia Walti play for Arsenal and were dating for a couple years before breaking up in 2023 or maybe 2022. Katie McCabe also plays for Arsenal and was in a long term and publicised relationship with another footballer called Ruesha Littlejohn. They both play for the Irish national team. Right before the World Cup in 2023, there were rumours that they broke up and Katie McCabe was dating Caitlin Foord - who is Australian. These rumours were mostly confirmed when Ireland and Australia played each other in the World Cup and Ruesha Littlejohn refused to shake Caitlin Foord’s hand before the game. Ruesha Littlejohn said she had her reasons, which made people think there was an overlap. They have now essentially confirmed their relationship. Littlejohn has a podcast where she sometimes makes snide remarks about them and Katie McCabe - who is captain or Ireland - has unfollowed Irish teammates. Lia Walti’s new girlfriend is rumoured to be joining Arsenal next season.

    • @lmnopeepeepoopoo

      @@Eki2456 yeah keeper is a weird position because there is only the starter and no one else ever plays unless the starter is out for some reason. It's so funny that Gabe thought he was about to go to women's soccer and was surprised it was men's.
    I'm in europe and over here it's the other way around: you hear "football" (soccer) and think "men's", and I can easily picture folks being surprised that their friend invited them to a women's game. There's a lot of misogyny in european football (and queerphobia as well, there's no prominent male gay player who's officially out).

    The conversation around pressure on teams and players reminded me of the situation for the Mayo Gaelic Football team (Irish sport). They won the All-Ireland Championship in 1951 and havent since. There are a few stories but the one i grew up with is that the bus returning to the county with the players after the win overtook a funeral procession which is a big no-no. The priest was furious and cursed them, saying that as long as everyone on the bus is alive Mayo will never win again. The Mayo team have come unbelievably close to winning again in the last decade and have missed out everytime, and for a long time only two people of the origonal team were still alive. The almost-wins were so close that if you didnt believe in curses you sure as hell would now. And people care so much ahout GAA (great sport!) that you'd honestly be concerned that someone would have tried killing them. I think theyre both dead now, so well have to see what happens next time Mayo gets to the final!

It was a day meant to celebrate Ali’s entire life’s work and it was such a bizarre choice to do that. It felt pointedly disrespectful and did nothing to help Ashlyn’s image.

The narrative was blaming men and NBA and comparing both leagues salaries and saying how unfair. Even WNBA players gave into that narrative it was shocking. I think then it was said that WNBA is subsidized by NBA and attendances and popularity of both leagues is incomparable. So i think we should have a MASSIVE PUBLIC conversation about this again and if narrative is again just blaming men and NBA the NBA should just 100% cut ties and cut all the funding from WNBA. This question about WNBA is not interesting or hard it only becomes hard or interesting question if you ignore attendance popularity profitability of the WNBA.
