    • @1987VCRProductions

      My thought is that if it ever steamed again it would be limited to heritage railways since it lacks a lot of the modern safety features that steam locomotives are required to have for mainline running on today's railway (AWS, modern air brakes, etc.). The engine had AWS in BR days but that was removed when the engine was returned to LNER condition for preservation. If it was allowed to run on the mainline as is it would likely be limited to a top speed of 60 mph rather than the typical 75.

      A very questionable claim. A more objective evaluation would imply the record to be by the German Baureihe 05. There are reasons to believe that the Mallard run was simply not legit while the German 05 achieved its insane speed on level terrain during normal operations between Hamburg and Berlin.

      @@rudycarlson8245although the mallard has the fastest official confirmed speed. The argument that it lost to the 05 locomotive is still incredibly valid, because the mallard was running downhill when it got the record, giving it a HUGE advantage over the 05, while the 05 was on level track.

    I've always thought it's funny that there isn't a bigger push to restore the Mallard. Why did they decide to let her go? Same goes for Union of South Africa (which is nearing the end of it's operating career).

    • @_Zekken
      @_Zekken 3 года назад +3

      Shes too historically valuable. The rail preservation society has a thing about replacing too many original parts with new ones which "damage" the purity of the locomotive in its original form. Kinda like thesus's ship. (If you replace every single part on a ship with new ones over time, is it still the same ship?)
      Thats probably why they wont restore her to running condition again.
      As for the other A4s, I think they are restoring them on a roster or something like that, as Union of SA ends, Sir Nigel Gresley will be finished. (She nearly is but covid delayed the completion) and after that Im assuming they'll start on Bittern.

    • @Christopherbellfan203
      @Christopherbellfan203 2 года назад

      @@_Zekken for me, I honestly wouldn’t care how many parts they replaced. If they replaced every part on mallard, I wouldn’t care. Because it is still mallard in my eyes. The only thing I care about is being able to see her run again.

      Sorry to say, it won’t happen. NS prohibits steam from achieving speed higher than 40mph on their mainlines, steam must have PTC fitted, cab signals, etc. Also due to the recent events in Ohio, I do not believe NS will allow steam on their rails for at least five years. 765, 1225, and 611 are exceptions because NS knows those engines very well. Don’t even think about Amtrak. They will not allow steam on their lines. UP, BNSF, maybe, but I highly doubt it as Freight comes first, even Amtrak has to go into sidings for priority freights. Maximum the T1 will do is probably 80-85mph max.
