Trinidad And Tobago Is Ignoring Its Venezuelan Refugee Problem (HBO)

  • Cedros, on the remote southwestern tip of the island of Trinidad, is a sleepy fishing village unaccustomed to heavy traffic. Its port is little more than a narrow jetty sticking out into the water and a small customs house on shore.
But in recent months, ferries have been dropping off passengers by the dozen, most of them hauling large rolling suitcases behind them. That’s because Cedros happens to be seven miles away from the Venezuelan coast, where political turmoil and a collapsing economy is driving people out by the thousands.
“Before this situation developed, the number of [Venezuelans] entering through the port was under 100 weekly,” said Shankar Teelucksingh, the councillor for Cedros. “Today we have over 1,500. And that’s just what we can keep track of - that excludes the ones that come into the country illegally.”
Roughly 3.4 million people have left Venezuela in recent years, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The large majority have gone overland to Colombia, Peru, and other South American countries. But proportionally, Trinidad and Tobago has received the most: an estimated 60,000 Venezuelans now live in the island nation, which amounts to more than four percent of its population.
And yet, of all the countries bearing the brunt of the Venezuelan refugee crisis, Trinidad and Tobago has done the least to address it. Venezuelans there can apply for refugee status from the UNHCR, which entitles them to stay in the country. But the government has not otherwise made significant efforts to integrate them or provide them with legal status.
Adults are not legally allowed to work, and children are not given the right to a public education. As a result, Venezuelans in Trinidad live mostly underground. The lucky ones find local residents who are willing to help them.
After months of living in overcrowded conditions with other families, Josué Campos and his family met a local school principal named Kelly-Ann Langdon-Pascal, who let them enroll their daughter for free in her small private school. Langdon-Pascal also rented them her basement apartment for cheap.
Campos and his wife now work odd jobs cleaning houses and on construction sites. “It’s tough, because you have to live in fear,” Campos said. “You’re working and you’re wondering if immigration is coming, if the police are coming. It’s not stable.”
Still, odd jobs in Trinidad are a better deal than a stable job in Venezuela: A day’s work in Trinidad is enough to buy food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Campos said. “With the minimum wage you get in Venezuela, you can’t even buy breakfast.”

Most of the so-called refugees are just economic migrants, they even admitted it openly in the video therefore they cannot be classified as refugees. Open borders ideology is a total utopia and will only lead to greater economic problems and possibly more wars.

Yes, we are willing to take in Venezuelans to an extent. There is a limit that has been reached and at this point we should’ve long ago declared a national emergency. Only the younger generations of our nation understand at least some Spanish..we aren’t properly equipped to handle these refugees- instead other Spanish speaking countries surrounding Venezuela should at least take some of the weight. Mass migration from Venezuela would continue to happen even if tomorrow it became 'stable'. Venezuela has 30mil people. T&T has ~1.5mil. If 1% of Venezuela migrates to Trinidad, that's 1/5 of our population. Their flow into the country would definitely put a further toll on our already strained infrastructure. Wouldn't be surprised if, in 30 years, Trinidad is a legitimate bilingual state.

Trinidad is several times larger than Hong Kong, and Trinidad is also a country which happens to be an island that while not attached is still part of the American continent unlike Venezuela, Guyana and Belize which are mainland American countries, so just to clarify, Trinidad is indeed a country and while nowhere near the size of Venezuela, they can take at least some refugees, which they already have, the real problem lies with the leaders of Trinidad, more people is fine but need to limit the amount of people doing public sector jobs, those people are just consuming Trinidadian oil money, when the oil stops they don't get paid, that's exactly what Venezuela did. They need to diversify their economy in a major way, those Venezuelans need to be farmers, traders and businessmen as do most of Trinidadians, the government has made the citizenry too reliant on getting a government job, or private contracted government jobs, whenever that happens a nation stagnates, people get lazy, no innovation happens, and that country will rely on others to produce goods and services to be paid for with their finite oil money, its just terrible leadership.

Yes, Trinidad is a small country and is unable to accommodate all the people coming in who need help. As far as I could see, the people of Trinidad, especially for a very small island, was way more welcoming than in other countries, when it came to people entering illegally. They were also doing the best they could with limited resources. What is not okay, is your "North American vibe" of causing a division among "Caribbean neighbors". The video comes off as if the country it self, is the problem, when States, as large as they are in the north of the Americas, aren't that welcoming to people who migrate there as well. Bring attention to your own issues in your backyard before you come for others. You all don't come from a good place when highlighting issues like this. How is highlighting this going to help the people affected?? All it's going to do, is cause economic, racial and social friction among the islands... sounds familiar?

They are resister for cards to work here like an average citizen, so they can provide for their families.

    Hi all,
It's refreshing to see this outside of Latinamerica. I am Panamañian born and the Venezuelans that have come into the Republic of Panama equates around to a total of 725,000 people. They can buy houses, get any job they want, enroll their kids anywhere for schooling and even buy cars. They can practice law and become doctors stealing the jobs from Panamañians who are skilled. They have contributed to our heavy as it is traffic and even have resorted to theft, looting and violence among the nation's locals.
The useless government now entitles them to our local social security and while the US and Europe are now blocking their borders for any Venezuelan to enter and saturate the nation, our useless president and his wife openly declared on the news last week that those Venezuelan illegals can come here and settle. It messes with a country's standard of living and today in Panama we make lines for every single thing causing delays and hours in traffic or in line.
Even to buy a newspaper means you have to wait. It's a global problem, it is an epidemic and is like a turmoil waiting to overthrow the nation. Many thanks for sharing your reality as it is in Panama. What a bad dream.

It was so rewarding to make a difference. So I thought. They stole hundreds of thousands from us and we closed. When we told them we closing up do you know what one staff member said? "we "ni**as messed this up". You must not be from Trinidad or owned a business here but labour force is an epidemic that cannot be fixed. Venezuela has close to 4 million refugees more than twice the size of our population of 1.5 million. As you correctly said proportionately relative to our country's size we have taken in more than those South American countries with 60k plus refugees' We aren't a country with unlimited resources like the USA. Hell on a World Scale we are a very small nation. I think we are trying to be of assistance to the Venezuelan refugees and we do feel for them but our resources are very limited.

I am from Trinidad as much as you think Trinidad is a rich country, we are not, we are currently facing crisis due to unemployment. The small country is under strain with such drastic changes in population constantly, you are asking, no! Your not asking, you are forcing us to ignore our own citizens that can barely be supported to due to our circumstances, to support outsiders, we are a country bound on supporting every creed and race as stated in our national anthem but I beg you to have understanding, open your eyes to the reality of the situation, a small country as my own has received the most Venezuelans as stated in the video and you hear them say too its much better than thier privious circumstances, that's all we can do, give them a better circumstance, may not be the best, but we too as a people aren't in the best circumstances so how can we offer it, as this situation is at hand we are currently in recession, there is only so much we can do. It's humanity to help but it's also humanity to understand and rationalize. What we need is help, we need help in helping these people, countries such as Panama aided in helping and they are not quite positively affected, much less for a small country such as my own. Remember there are two sides to a story and most statements are souly based on prospective. Read the comments of my people and try to understand what they are facing. Its easy to judge when your outside of the problem especially when shown such a miss leading video as this one.

The Venezuelans going to Trinidad are from the Northeast, AKA the part of the country that is suffering the most scarcity. People can't even eat garbage there, they're eating roots. To go to Brazil and Colombia, they would have to rely on a crappy public transportation system and dangerous roads full of thieves. I see why they would rather go to nearby Trinidad.

Hopefully these refugees are able to move to another country with enough land and resources to support them. This is why many refugees from the ME go to Europe because their neighbors may be stable, but they also lack the resources to support them and are also on the brink of political/economic collapse.
Many times its the powerful nations that cause these countries to collapse, and the people fleeing is a consequence of these powerful nations destabilizing them for resources.
Developing nations shouldn't have to face the consequences of the greed of these world powers while said world powers close their eyes. BUT, the police in Trinidad are very corrupt and shameless and should be punished for what they're doing.

This is so wrong, Trinidad is not in a state to help a country but still Trinidad is helping them, the Venezuelans are being treated more like Trinidadians than we the real Trinidadians are being treated even tho MOST OF THE VENEZUELANS ARE HERE ILLEGALLY, we Trinidadians need help ourselves, look at the size of Venezuela and Trinidad and most of the Venezuelans are coming here , thousands of people here have lost our jobs here in Trinidad recently but it have jobs for those thousands of Venezuelans here? Like wtf that's so stupid and so unfair to we Trinis, The Venezuelans are getting to work here for a whole year and they don't need job experience, the food cards that some Trinidadians depend on cause they don't have jobs they want to take it away from them and give it to the Venezuelans, now the Venezuelans here are on strike for food here, that is the most stupid thing I have ever heard of,how the hell can someone from another country go on strike on someone elses country and demand for food and jobs when we the Trinidadians need help ourselves, it should be Trinidadians going on strike not them, the Venezuelans are getting so much help from Trinidad yet you're saying that Trinidadians are not helping them, they are getting away from coming here illegally, they are getting free treatment from hospitals and getting it quickly when Trinidadians have to wait days in there to get a hospital bed, they are getting to work here for a whole year but you are bad talking Trinidad?...Trinidadians who have degrees, distinctions in lots of subjects are not getting jobs here in Trinidad our own country but the Venezuelans are saying that the ones who don't like them being here are people who " are not educated,do not have jobs and woman depending on they man" what kind of bullshit is that,we are educated,we don't depend on other people, you and the Venezuelans are saying that Trinidadians are not letting Venezuelans go to school here, how the hell can they come to school here when this is a ENGLISH SPEAKING COUNTRY,well island, there not many people here in Trinidad who can speak Spanish, Trinidad has done so so so much for them but still they want more, that is selfish..., why don't you talk about how they brought a disease to Trinidad, why don't you talk about how they are coming here illegally and demanding the Trinidadians to help them, why don't you talk about how they brought weapons to Trinidad, why don't you talk about how the Venezuelans are killing and beating the Trinidadians here, why don't you talk about how the Trinidadian woman wanted to help a Venezuelan woman and the Trinidadian women brought her to her home with a good mind and the Venezuelan woman cut and beat up the Trinidadian woman in her own home, why don't you talk about how the Venezuelans kidnapped some Trinidadian fisher men just cause they were unknowingly fishing in "Venezuelans water's" and they demanded more than 1 million dollars to release them and they still expect us to help them. that is selfish....Why the hell do you think most Venezuelans are coming here to Trinidad, it's cause they are getting away with everything, they are walking freely in Trinidad, not cause it's closer and because of that more Venezuelans will come here in Trinidad, You should be making a video on that also you should be making one on What will happen to Trinidadians now...Since we got a new Prime Minister he has done nothing for us in Trinidad other than fired thousands of Trinidadians from there jobs and blame the previous Prime Minister for everything when the previous Prime Minister was actually helping the Trinidadians when she was elected as the Prime Minister... So really what will happen to Trinidadians. You should be banned from RUclips for giving false information about my island (Trinidad). I couldn't believe that you made this video, saying only negative things about Trinidad,I would have slap the shit out of you for giving false information.
