Never thought I'd hear a version of this song "WITHOUT" Maurice White (R.I.P.) and Philip Bailey's vocals that I could like, but this was OFF THE CHARTS!
Henry Johnson is as "greasy" as he wannabe !!! I need that clip on loop! I treadmill to this! Never get tired of the varied attacks, or textures of his statements! Ramsey knows what he wants in his sound..
Already an amazing solo and when he hits that part where he’s harmonizing with himself and it sounds like two guitars it just takes it to the stratosphere
I thought that Henry Johnson is a Jazz guitarist because of the axe he has, and something about the way he plays, but I read he played multiple styles until hearing Wes Montgomery had a major influence on him.
fucking great. heard Yesterday's New Quintet/Madlib version, then found the EW&F version, but this is by far my favorite version. wish I was alive in 1980 to see this!
Yes sir I also had the privilege to see that show in person. No flares, just music PURE music. One the best show I have ever been at! Where did you get the DVD ( or VHS lol) ? Never thought I would see this again !!! This was the second stint of the Montréal Jazz festival in a very simple theatre, with concrete all over... But the music just got better !!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Yea that actually is a nice guitar solo. Improvised melody from Ramsey was well put together as well. Shows he really knows it. Bass and drums I give' m an A++++. Creative in the pocket so don't knock it! But back to the guitar. I can tell the action of the guitar is well set up. It has a nice balance with 12 gauge nickel wound maybe 13 gauge played with a light medium pick which gives flexibility and fluidity over the strings. coming out of the board facilitates his playing more, having the power to be heard clearly. He 's got all the George Benson stops which every jazz guitarist must have. He put them in the right place and in his own way. My man!
Fuck man you know your stuff, to help your point I believe ur right based on the sound of strings, I use 12-14 based on my tunings but when you play in lighter tunings (basically standard) the strings are super flexible and easy to use. Also adds a deeper tone to the strings idk but yeah, keep rockin brotha
I played a small chitlin circuit type of club in the mid 70s where my band opened up for Jack McDuff. His guitarist was the great Henry Johnson. It was unforgettable.
No, the genius here is CHARLES STEPNEY. He wrote and produced. People think it was Maurice White…it wasn’t. When Stepney died in 1975, they stole everything. Years later Maurice White had to settle out of court with Stepney’s family regarding the millions in royalties they never received.
Yall i was abt 13 or 14 when this came out. Wasnt the words talking abt a pill called quaaludes? I always thought tht was the name of the song? Im 64 now so if i was wrong ive been wrong for decades 😮
It was originally a Ramsey Lewis tune produced by Maurice White. From the 1974 Ramsey Lewis album Sun Goddess...definitely NOT EWF...they were just the backing band !!
This has just left me with an enormous smile, and the utter jealousy that comes with being an amateur guitar player that cant possibly hope to do what I just saw anytime soon.
I just found this in may 2024. I knew it was going to be amazing when the drummer hit the cymbals with his hands 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
😊
Imagine being such a good guitarist that Ramsey doesn’t even take a solo on this song? “Yeah, Henry’s got this.” He sure does. 🔥
So smooth and jazzy
Of course everyone is searching this song (RIP Mr. Lewis), but I’ve never heard this stripped down version. Absolutely incredible.
Bought that album when it first came out...played it to death...RIP🙏
Henry Johnson absolutely kills it with that funky solo.
Wow ! He killed it !!! So good.
Indeed! He and the guitar are on fire!
Yeh, Gotta check him out. New name for me.@@retromusings

Quando uma música é boa, é boa mesmo. Em qualquer versão. É isso aí. Show demais.
I think I like this version better!
This Cat on the Guitar is what i refer to as a Gunslinger,He's Great !
That;s Henry Johnson. He still plays smokin jazz guitar in Chicago.
Henry Johnson is as "greasy" as he wannabe !!! I need that clip on loop! I treadmill to this! Never get tired of the varied attacks, or textures of his statements! Ramsey knows what he wants in his sound..

What a solo ,madness.
As much as I love the studio version with the smooth EWF vocals (way oh...), this instrumental version is off the chain!!!!!
Electric!
RIP Ramsey Lewis 🙏🏿🙏🏿
wonderful!!...
can you imagine a guitar duel between Henry Johnson and George Benson?
Collaboration would be better !
He said Benson was a major influence
Good music is good music and can not be denied they delivered.
Already an amazing solo and when he hits that part where he’s harmonizing with himself and it sounds like two guitars it just takes it to the stratosphere
Rest in peace my brother. Your music, your legacy and what you gave the world will outlast us all.🎹
I thought that Henry Johnson is a Jazz guitarist because of the axe he has, and something about the way he plays, but I read he played multiple styles until hearing Wes Montgomery had a major influence on him.
What a delight! Thanks for sharing!
fucking great. heard Yesterday's New Quintet/Madlib version, then found the EW&F version, but this is by far my favorite version. wish I was alive in 1980 to see this!
One of the greatest to ever do it. RIP Ramsey Lewis! One of my favorite songs....thanks and RIP to Maurice White as well.

I had never heard about them. Amazing vibes, I loved it. It would be good with samba, that what I was looking for my music.
My word, a quartet sounding like an orchestra!
Rest in Peace Ramsey Lewis and Maurice White, two musical giants☮️

Ain't nothing like the sound of a big bodied semi hollow. So smooth.
This is one the HOTTEST PIECES! Smokin' man, SMOKIN'!
I played a small chitlin circuit type of club in the mid 70s where my band opened up for Jack McDuff. His guitarist was the great Henry Johnson. It was unforgettable.
Drummer was tight and on-point on this live. Excellent performance! :)
The genius of Maurice White.
RIP.
WOW! I had no idea Maurice White produced and wrote this amazing piece.
wiki says: "Sun Goddess" is a single by jazz musician Ramsey Lewis featuring the band Earth, Wind & Fire issued in 1975 on Columbia Records.
No, the genius here is CHARLES STEPNEY. He wrote and produced. People think it was Maurice White…it wasn’t. When Stepney died in 1975, they stole everything. Years later Maurice White had to settle out of court with Stepney’s family regarding the millions in royalties they never received.
@@sabrinaphillips916 thank you for this information. Can you maybe provide some evidence? And correct wikipedia on that topic`?

Yall i was abt 13 or 14 when this came out. Wasnt the words talking abt a pill called quaaludes? I always thought tht was the name of the song? Im 64 now so if i was wrong ive been wrong for decades 😮
*That guitar solo, holy wow!* 🙌🏾😲
INCREDIBLE !!!
Off the chain!
Wow… great guitar solo but they needed to return to the melody before ending it
Great to see the late Ramsey Lewis and his band perform his modern jazz/funk masterpiece which EWF popularized with their unique vocal style.
It was originally a Ramsey Lewis tune produced by Maurice White. From the 1974 Ramsey Lewis album Sun Goddess...definitely NOT EWF...they were just the backing band !!
So funky it must be illegal 😀
