Thanks Colin. When I fill cracks or marks or imperfections. I make a pile of sawdust my using the exact same wood. Then I pack the hole really tight with the sawdust and soak it with thin CA glue. I’ll add more sawdust to the top as it dries then sand it down. Works well for me.
Thought the same would be a possibility. Recently bought a paint scraper at HD with extra carbide blades that are slightly curved and fairly sharp. Perfect for scraping a small width line. The other edge of scraper is straight. The blades can be touched up on a diamond stone, too.
It’s amazing how many uses there are with CA glue! It’s pretty amazing stuff. I actually found some CA glue in my fridge a few weeks ago that’s probably been in the fridge for about 3 years. I tried it before throwing it out, and it still worked great, although not sure how long it would actually hold because of its age, I wouldn’t advise forgetting you have CA glue in the fridge, but recommend that you store it in the fridge as it does in fact extend the life of the glue.
To repair screw holes or unseen voids I fill the holes in small steps with baking soda and then add CA glue. After the mixture has hardened, I can drill a new hole for a screw or fill in an unseen void and sand smooth. This mixture makes a very hard and strong repair. It can be used to repair, wood, plastics, fiberglass and even metals.
It’s helpful to use a block plane set to a very fine cut to remove the ca glue blobs first so you don’t end up with a valley in the wood. Sanding is less selective.
I was watching stephen ogle video earlier about filling bowl cracks with epoxy. He said matthias wendel did a video comparing glues and epoxy to fill cracks. Supposedly epoxy did best. Depends how big the void is I guess. If its just a hairline I'd probably use CA, bigger id go epoxy.
I'm a very big fan of CA glue. One thing I suggest is to always speak about the dangerous vapours that the CA glue releases... It's very problematic, specially for people with lungs problems. Great content, as always.
Do one about Hot glue guns, i have a crude reading table for my bed what's literally being held together with hot glue. those things are also amazing, i was careless with one corner as it loosened and used CA glue to fix it. lol.
Thanks for tips! I am new to this and although I have Starbond CA glue you gave me some great ideas on it’s many uses! I particularly like the example of the 3 types at the start of your video. As a newbie it helped me understand the difference - I wish I had seen this when I originally ordered it because I wasn’t sure which to get. I did order the medium and it had worked great so far. Thanks again for all your videos - very informative.
I have opened (but capped) CA in the fridge that still works as expected after ten years (at least). Tube Epoxies too. Store some in a fridge, you’ll be surprised how long it retains most if not all of its properties. Why are all WW channels addicted to ‘accelerator’ with CA? You do know regular CA sets in seconds anyway, especially on wood (and skin) without fancy, cost adding sprays!
Colin HELP? Watching a playlist of your videos, a very long time ago, i saw you talk about the kind of gloves you use with CA glue; but later when i wanted to buy some, i wasn't able to locate the reference again. So, I was so excited, to see this updated CA glue tips video, and I made sure to screenshot the gloves type when shown in white on the screen. But, like some others have said in the comments, I cannot find Polythyrene Gloves. Can you help us out with a Link, or brand name? As always, great content Colin!👍 I love your channel and I very much appreciate all of the care, up to date & welcomed information, and very hard work that you put in to all of your videos. Thanks for over 14 years of wood working goodness! ~ 🛠Lisa♿ PS I will, follow the link and read the full article, in search of my answer, but I wanted to ask about the gloves here, before navigating away. My disability software plays well with RUclips, but I am not always so lucky out on the wild wild web, Thank You.
"Polythyrene" is not a thing. He probably meant polyethylene (same plastic as grocery bags) and confused it with polystyrene (Styrofoam), which gloves are not made of and which would dissolve in the accelerator.
Great info Colin, but I need some help.... but where on earth can I get those polyTHYRENE gloves that you mention? PolyETHYLENE gloves are widely available. But no matter where I search, I've not been able to find polyTHYRENE gloves. Was that maybe a typo? Did you mean to say that polyethylene gloves are safe for CA glue?

If the cracks are big enough don’t use CA at all - use epoxy. Regardless of what you use to fill a big defect don’t sand at all… CA and epoxy are both harder than most woods, save for a few exotics. So use a plane and/or a cabinet scraper to get it flushed up.
@@williambranham6249 Same here. I only got CA glue for live edge bowls, and maybe filling some small checks in wood. CA has its place though, just like epoxy. Dont always need it but when you do it comes in real handy

Thanks for showing me your tips, I feel a lot more confident now to use CA glue.
Easy stick for your rasp? Consider a paint stir stick. Thanks for the tips.
Use a scraper to remove the "bead" of CA that sits above or on the surface. A single edge razor works well for small stuff
I was about to ask if this would be an option. Thanks for the comment!

WTF did I respond too?....D'Oh!
No idea how this ended up here. Was looking at another video....D'Oh!
wrong video!

Love using Starbond, The different size tips Help. I keep in the freezer...
I am literally applying CA glue for the first time tonight. Thank you! Very timely as well!

Most excellent. I use Starbond glue - your recommendation - great tips. Thank you.👍👍

Excellent tips, Colin! Thanks a lot! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
You can get sharpie markers that write with silver ink for those dark surfaces
I use the CA to tighten up knots in the wood. Most of the time the knot won't give you a problem if you do that.
I just use regular wood glue
@@A6Legit the thin ca glue goes in deeper tho
@@stephendonathan6782 true if you have a real loose/deep knot.
How about epoxy to fill voids? Better/worse than CA? A contrast would be helpful. Enjoyed, thanks.
Im guessing epoxy is better. Thats what I plan to use on smaller cracks

"Polythyrene" is not a thing. He probably meant polyethylene (same plastic as grocery bags) and confused it with polystyrene (Styrofoam), which gloves are not made of and which would dissolve in the accelerator.
Can you run it through a planer if you overfill a crack with glue?
do they eventually dry without using the accelerator ?
A more appropriate name would be catalyst. Accelerate aka go faster. Its not required to harden the glue
Are those gloves poly ethylene gloves? I have never heard of poly thyrine polymer before.
How do you stop the glue drying in the nozzle?
Does the viscosity of the CA glue, affect the drying time. Thanks
Thinner dries faster but i couldnt tell you how much of a difference there is. If its a concern thats what accelerator is for
how do you keep tip clear of glue
I use another brand of ca glue.Would the activator that i have work with starbond? I guess my question is are all activators the same?
Most likely yeah. Theyre all meant for CA glue. I got different brand activator cause it was cheaper
CA glue sets in the presence of moisture. Accelerator an unnecessary expense unless you are doing production work.
@@williambranham6249 Its worth having for gluing odd stuff. Rather not sit around a few minutes holding something in place.

As far as i can tell thyrene doesnt exist, as a compound anyway. Theres some supplement by that name but 🤷♂️

What type of gloves? I can't find polytsyrene, or polythyrene gloves anywhere.
Poly-ethylene. Basic food prep gloves.

i just use the paint sticks you get at your local box store
Wear a respirator when using CA. I have to wear a full face one or I'll sneeze for 3 days after.
I had a bad experience after many years . I left a similar safety tip above.
Don't talk about what you don't know!
Polyethylene is de propper word!!!
Honest mistake ff ff

Really you like working with them so much is because you get them for free.
Same reason haters hate. It’s free.
Personally I'd use almost anything else before CA glue because its so expensive.
@@A6Legit If time is important then I use CA glue. 🤭Otherwise I use yellow wood glue with clamps , turn out the shop light and head for the recliner.
