  • We are bombarded by social media these days, where camera brands, ambassadors and influencers are trying to tell you what your photography should be, how you should make it, and what gear you need to use. It can be easy to feel insignificant, and your work doesn't matter. Well, I'm here today to tell you your work matters. No matter what.

This video matters too. Social media/influencer culture poisons everything. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much for this. Very well said. If it matters to you, it matters. This is an important lesson well beyond photography.
There is no grand cosmic scale at which your personal work becomes objectively, universally significant. On this planet reside billions of people who have never heard the names Robert Capa, Robert Frank, Saul Leiter, Sergio Larrain...
Pursue universality and you'll only arrive at disappointment.
Your work matters at exactly the scale you allow it to matter, with those you grant the privilege to see it, even if it's only you.

Its a interesting topic especially now that I am a full time student and my studies take higher priority then taking photos. I will however whenever there is a good moment use my phone and document the moment and the best part is that the photos are just for me!
I still have 10 undeveloped rolls of colour film in my fridge that will one day be developed and scanned!

Oh yeah, there are a lot of things that pull you away from photography so it’s important to take time when you can! Best of luck with your studies and thanks for watching 🍻

The hardest thing has been to just put the camera down or away when at family events or just with family. When all you are worried about is capturing the moment you are never in the moment. So I rarely bring a camera to the big family events. Now I interact with family rather just capturing the family.

It’s a tough balance for sure! Thankfully there’s another photographer in my extended family! Thanks for watching 🍻

Agree with you 200%. Unfortunately most people believe what takes the picture is the gear, not the brain. The industry marketing is stronger than reality. Actually I find that it's gear limitation that makes you a better photographer, because they force you to move and focus on the subject. I don't have too many gear, only a "real" digital camera - a D700 -, which I shoot like film: preset it and forget it. Hate menus... Prefer my Rolleiflex 3.5F :)
I find DoubleX works so much better on 120 than on 35, it looks like another film, like the onder Tri-X. Love it!
Thanks for the video! Hope it light some sparks on more and more people

Yeah, the marketing machine is strong! And yes, I shoot my D750 same as film! Thanks for watching 🍻

Good stuff man. I certainly don’t use the latest greatest gear - I typically prefer seeing what kind of images I can coax out of humble gear. I also hardly ever shoot manual - I spend most of my time in Program or Aperture Priority mode.

Great video. I really like those deep blacks in the images. Your words "Shoot what , with and on ...." completely resonates with me. Last weekend a dear friend asked me to look into an 70 years old medium format negative of his father. I made a print of the edited negative. He was really happy to share this photograph with his family. When photography makes you happy or makes others happy that matters.

Oh that’s wonderful being able to work with and print the 70 year old negative to bring joy to you and your friend! Thanks for watching 🍻

That's a great take on the act of taking pictures! It's a hobby, a form of self expression, etc and all that means we make images for ourselves and sometimes closed ones. Not to please x proportion of all humans in earth!
One more note regarding the video itself, I want to highlight that I really liked that the audio levels are more similar between the music and the spoken segments compared to prior videos. It makes for a much more comfortable watching experience at least for me!
    Cheers

Alex great video. I like what you say and do photography for yourself. I post my photos on Flickr and make an album for each time I go out and take photos. Last Saturday I went to Ward's Island with Toronto Photo Walks. I used my old Sony A200 camera. I posted an album on Sunday after I edited my photos and picked the shoots I liked. I was just checking my Flickr stats and since Sunday I have had 4,659 views on my photos.I have almost 3 million views on my Flickr account. I am a guy who just walks around and takes snap shots. For the last few years I do all my editing on a Chromebook using Snapseed. You do not need the most up to date camera. I still use my A6000 A5000 and the one rare Sony camera the A3000 and of course my A200.

You make amazing images Brad! I love seeing all your work! And yes, nothing wrong with older digitals! Even my D750 is the same vintage as the a6000! Thanks for watching 🍻
