The History of the Mothership Eyeshadow Palette by Pat McGrath Labs

- Опубликовано: 3 ноя 2024
- This week Pat McGrath Labs released Morhership XI: Sunlit Seduction. It's another pink-toned palette and this one doesn't have any baked special shades. I thought it might be time to talk through the history of these iconic eyeshadow palettes from the artistic genius Pat McGrath and speculate on how we got here. How did the most exciting, high fashion moment in makeup (a new Mothership release) become so ordinary? I have theories and in this video I present them to you.
Thanks for watching!
Xoxo

Thank you this was a very enjoyable trip down memory lane, I feel like reminiscing about my own PML journey now. I am definitely the consumer who was disappointed in this release and is on to the brand for phasing out the baked textures. I do have all the motherships, so nowhere to go from here except back into my old treasures.
MARIAM, I adore your channel so much. Your story of biking home when the release was launched really spoke to me. I understand the sense of loss very, very much. Please know your channel has been a balm for me. I love how you show mixing the palettes and really using them. Thank you for sharing your collection and artistry.
@@InfinitegardenbyBethK Ah thank you that is very sweet!!! We shall continue to cherish the older motherships and hope they don't ruin them or worse, discontinue them.
I agree--discontinuation is always on the table in the world of makeup.
As we age, may we all become old treasures. 😘🤗😎

What an incredible video! I was hanging on to your every word! You taught me some things I hadn’t really paid attention to, thank you! I have to add that I LOVE your hair, and I’m elated you ended up purchasing Mothership III you will love it! It’s one of my favorites! ❤
OMG, Patty! I watch all of your videos! You are so inspiring ❤️ Thank you so much for the kind comment. I hope I get my Mothership III this week.
*EDIT I can't believe I wasn't actually subscribed to your channel--the algorithm serves me your videos so I missed that.
I completely agree about enjoying all motherships that have come before. I own all previous 10 and have said the same to other friends, that this should just make us appreciate all the fabulous motherships we have in our collections. We have more than enough artistry to enjoy.
Thank you for this super thoughtful comment! 💖 I may not pan these shadows in my lifetime, but I can try 😂
Devine rose 1 was meant to launch in Asia exclusively. Because there was so much demand for it they launched in other countries.
Thank you for this information! It makes perfect sense. 💖
That's what I was thinking.... Asia is a huge luxury market now and the latest rose collections fit perfectly into what Korean and Chinese makeup uses as shades. I wonder if this is the reason she is not experimental anymore.
Patty Alonso brought me here ❤❤ such a well organized, well spoken, elegant talk!
It’s incredible how Mothership VI is the Cinderella of the Mothership sisters, and then she always grows on everyone owns and uses her.. such a stunning, everyday with a twist palette! A much beloved Mothership
Thank you for the kind words! 🥰😘 I’m so glad you came over to my little corner of RUclips. I completely agree with you about it VI. It’s truly useful and so versatile. The range of looks one can make with VI is astounding!
This video made me tear up a bit, what a wonderful tribute the Pat's artistry. I hope her investors get to hear your plea! I too came to the Mothership world a bit late in 2019 when I discovered the RUclips beauty world (my first video was the beautiful Mel Thompson). I since have found more people who share my appreciation (even nerdiness) for Pat's shadows. I only own 5 Motherships (just ordered Divine Rose 2 last week), and plan to get more before the end of the year before the baked shades are no more. Maybe she can convince her investors to allow her to create at least one more quad of baked shadows before they retired (crossing my fingers). In the meantime, I will enjoy the ones I already have.
Bless Mel Thompson 💗
I haven’t heard that the baked shades are done after the end of this year!! It makes sense but I only had a hunch.
Thank you for the kind comment. 💖
@@InfinitegardenbyBethK I have the same hunch, so I am getting them just in case.
I started with Mel Thompson as well, on Utube. Miss her. 🥰🌹
You said so much of what I’ve been thinking about Pat McGrath‘s current situation. When someone is a true genius at their art, which I consider Pat McGrath to be, they’re going to go in directions you may not want them to go. Whatever the forces acting upon them are, or just that they are leaning into a specific color palette for their work, this has been going on for centuries with the great artists. So I just can’t hate on Pat because she is in her “Pink Period”. I myself ordered some light seduction, I’m waiting for it to arrive, and it may be a perfectly fine addition to my collection! Otherwise I’ll send it back. Heaven knows we don’t have to have everything she does as much as we want to. ❤
I love that you call it her “pink period” 💖 I hope you enjoy your beautiful new palette
I love this video ❤️ I’m saddened by what’s happening to Pat’s iconic brand. It doesn’t seem like she’s in control anymore. And yes, « investors » ruin most things 😣
Thank you 💖💖 I totally feel as you do here. It hurts!
The money, ruin everything.
Without investors her business might not survive though. So it's a dilemma 😓
@@aurigavega yes, that’s simply the reality!
I found you through Patty Alonzo and I'm so grateful she told us to watch you. Instant sub ❤
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you’re here 🥰😘 Patty is the best 💖
Thank you for taking us back and reminding us to appreciate and use what we already have because I must agree with you her baked shades maybe gone for now but I am still hoping not forever.
I hope they’ll be back, too, Lisa! 💖
This is going to be a bit long, sorry! First, I am delighted your video showed up in my feed. I'm about to hit subscribe! This was extremely thoughtful. I also have been purchasing Pat McGrath since the sequin bag days. Until this year, I would consider myself a super-fan. I have every Mothership, every six pan, every quad, and every single. I have all the holiday palates and all of her complexion products. I'm on an extreme budget this year, and I didn't plan to get Mothership XI, unless it went on sale or I had extreme regret. So, there was a supposed glitch in the matrix, and I ended up impulsively preordering it at 30 percent off. I have it in hand, and, because I follow Pat, the artist, so closely, my conspiracy is that she had nothing to do with this. This is not remotely related to what she's creating on the runways, now or last year for FW 2023. I'm sure she signed off on it, but this is not her work and not even what she's into right now. I think this was an investor obligation and a new customer acquisition palette. It is pretty, it is a nice color story, but I can dupe it almost exactly with an old Charlotte Tilbury Stars in Your Eyes (before Pillowtalk takeover) holiday palette that's in my own declutter pile without even needing to dip into other Motherships and that is so sad. I still have beautiful CT quads and blushes from before her brand sold and turned into Pillowtalk, inc. and I think we are on the cusp on that here. I want to be happy for these hardworking, creative artists that all are from humble or ordinary beginnings to becoming extremely wealthy, especially as they are getting a bit closer to retiring from an exhausting profession. I think they just need to be careful of what bears their name and legacy. There are cautionary tales for many artists, here and sadly departed, of what happens when you no longer control your company that bears your name. Ok, I'm babbling, but she is warm, generous, curious, creative, and above all, a perfectionist. There is no way anyone can convince me that she had anything to do with this palette, the formulas, the color story, or even the regurgitated box. Mothership 1 and 5 are my most used, so I feel like that's what I should spend my money on since I had no idea until today that they were that old!!! Sorry for the block of text, I just had thoughts and felt this was the right video to share them. Thank you!!😊
This comment hit me so hard-thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts! I have had the exact same inkling. I love literature and am a fan of David Foster Wallace (he inspired my channel name). He talked about hour you can read a paragraph from a writer and just *know* they wrote it. He called it a “tang”, the words have a certain tang that you can identify. This palette absolutely doesn’t have the Pat McGrath tang. It feels AI generated. Pretty? Yes it really is-but it doesn’t sit right with me.
1000% agree. Pat herself cannot be creating these pink pallets. Far too stale for her wheelhouse.
@@angeliquemcfarland171 I just watched @morganturnermakeup review this palette and it doesn’t seem to offer much range either. Her other palettes offer a wider variety of looks that can be created. It’s part of the value!
This was exactly what I was thinking!! There's no way she'd release something less than perfect. After seeing a lot of reviewers are having trouble with that red special shade in Mothership Xl has met more convinced that there's something fishy going on. I no longer think she has full control over what's being produced based on quality alone😓 I hope that if it's the investors trying to milk the company for money that they'll listen to the consumers concerns, frustrations and us wanting more from the brand that they'll give Pat back the reigns so she can continue to create beautiful unique palettes again. That's if any of that is at all true, which I hope is that rather than Pat just being lazy. But I don't think she'd risk her name being tainted 😢
I’m so happy someone shared this video with me! What an incredible breakdown of one of my favorite brands. I think it’s so important to critique the things we love and right now PMG Labs really needs to start listening! You voiced the brands history and perception by consumers beautifully!
Thank you, Joseph! I appreciate your kind comment. So many of us truly love this brand, and I think our critiques are fair. 🤷♀️
this was a fantastic video. I really like how you talked about how consumers sometimes get a window of opportunity to partake in artistry and avangarde products and just because that window closes, it doesn't mean we can't appreciate what we have gotten to enjoy. in all of this controversy we find ourselves with the new direction of the Pat McGrath brand, it's important to remember and celebrate the incredible motherships she's put out on the market and how much joy we've all gotten out of them. I too hope that her investors or the teams involved in setting up the direction of the brand in future don't lose sight of what made the brand such a stand out experience for all of us who love Pat's incredible talents.
So well said 🥰
Thank you for this video. On another note, you look stunning with gray/white hair. Not everyone can rock it.
Thank you!! It’s been life changing to embrace my natural hair. 💖
Wow as you said we have 23 shades of baked formula, I realized we DO have a lot of baked shades, even if it's now being phased out. Let us take a moment to appreciate the things we do have ♡♡
Yeah --it’s a ton!
I am just a regular makeup lover and I want to say that I have about 90% of all the eye products she has come out with especially all of her mothership palettes except this last one. It no longer inspires me and I don’t feel like pay a high price for something I already have. I will say that if it’s available when she has her 30% sale and this is included, then I’ll consider buying it but until then I’ll just enjoy all of my other pallets including the six pan ones. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Btw.. I just found your channel and subscribed 😊
Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here! 🥰😘
I truly know how you feel. I’ve been so happy and satisfied up until now, but the good news is that now we have loads of gorgeous eyeshadow to use and enjoy. Thank you for the kind words 🥰😘

LOVED this video. Your grace, elegance and honesty are very appreciated.
You are so kind! Thank you 💖
I agree that by removing one of the baked shades from Huetopian dream, PML was testing the waters to see whether they could continue this trend.
And by the reviews of them, it seems that the non-baked shades of moonlit seduction were a better iteration than the ones in sunlit seduction. (Man the name sunlit, so much scope to introduce yummy new colours! Even muted tones would have worked. Something orange, yellow, blueish, raspberry. A shifting multichrome to reflect sunset/ dawn! Transformative toppers just like when the sky changes colours 🤩)
I think the motherships are the soul of Pat Mcgrath Labs, they really take center stage. Perhaps can even be called the brands identity. So in my humble opinion, each palette should be an unique, curated color story. Which I think numbers 1 - 10, even if three were pink heavy, were able to do. Giving each palette and shade awell chosen name + unique packaging too, helped establish a palette as a mothership.
After having finished 1 - 10 and entering a new volume, it would have been nice to see something fresh and innovative to kick off with MS 11.
What made the motherships worth the price tag to me, were firstly the four special shades, unique to PML in terms of texture and colour and 6 great matte/ metalllics/ satins + luxury packaging.
My first mothership was DR2 and gosh, did I fall in love! The way the mattes blended like a soft fluffy cloud into my crease. The way the sparkles reflected like a thousand stars on my eyelids, oh my! 😍
Without the baked shades and the freshness of creativity that they provide, I do not feel motherships are worth the price. This 11th mothership just doesn't cut it for me. It's boring! The special shades could have elevated it, but I feel they do the opposite.
The end of an era, yes and I will never buy this mothership, not even on sale. (Don't mind being gifted it lol).
Between PML motherships, quads, quints, 6-pan palettes and mega motherships, I'm set for life with all the pinky shades.
Like someone said, truly the end of an era.
I think you hit it right on the head-the
Motherships are the soul of the brand. This is why people are so upset. We’ve been chill about the Quads and six-pans, etc. But the Motherships were a genius artistic creation and it pains some of us to seem them made ordinary.
Thank you . Didn’t know she used to release 2-3 motherships per year
You are so welcome 🥰😘 Yeah, it was fast and furious for a while there!
This is the first time I’ve watched your channel, and I’m so impressed! What a wonderful snapshot of Pat McGrath’s journey in the development of her brand! My first mothership purchase was also Divine Rose I, and I’ve been adding them to my collection ever since. I still haven’t purchased any of her previous motherships, but I’m tempted to get her Subliminal palette with the cool tones and beautiful blue. I did purchase Mothership XI, and I’ve toyed with the idea of returning it, but it is a lovely palette. I’ve been familiar with Pat’s career as an avant garde makeup artist, and really appreciate her artistry in the field. We can only hope that her investors allow her to continue bringing us the amazing quality she’s been known for with her brand.
Thank you so much! Subliminal is both super wearable (the six “foundation” shades are so good) and the special shades are what dreams are made of. I love it-but I tend to be cool-ish. If you can wear DR I, I would bet you can wear Subliminal. 🩵
✨This was an absolutely perfect summary of the Pat McGrath story. I love how you took us on a journey and ultimately honoured the artist. I completely agree with your observations and sadly, will not be purchasing Mothership XI. As a makeup artist, I cannot justify adding this palette to my collection as I have these types of shades on repeat. Unfortunately for her diehard fans, we will lose out to consumerism. Mass appeal pays the bills and this is economic reality - even for an artist like Pat McGrath. Maybe she should develop a high price point artistry palette (Super Mothership at $128) and a lower priced “mass market” palette in less expensive packaging (maybe at a $80 price point) in a year. That way she will sell the volume via the mass appeal palette and add additional revenue (and still maintain her creativity and brand) through the sale of limited and exclusive artistry palettes. Thank you for your insights - I’ve just subscribed for more 🫶🏽✨
Thank you for this thoughtful comment and your kind words 🥰🥰 I like your idea for creating different tiers-almost like a PML select level. I would be here for that!
Love this idea!
Great video. The absolute disrespect & hate I’ve noticed in comments highlight the fact that most customers respond emotionally to what are obviously strategic business decisions made by the brand (including investors) and not Pat herself.
Pat is booked & busy creating the high fashion makeup looks for multiple top designers for multiple seasons, and has chosen (upon the coaxing and encouraging of her initial IG followers) to grace us with her additional efforts to share her beauty products and secrets.
Hear hear 👏👏👏 this is a very healthy perspective (if I may say so)
Thank you for your perspective. I have them all including number 11. I miss the older ones and I must cherish them more.
I hope you enjoy this new palette! It’s very beautiful, and I seems like it will be daily-wear friendly. 🥰😘 it’s important to remember to cherish the great stuff we have.
This was so cool to do a formal breakdown of all the mothership pallets…great job thank you!
Thank you!! 🥰😘
This is a great video. This latest palette looks like its where I leave the mothership journey. I have all of them and at the price point each purchase process has been an arduous one. Her makeup was always my splurge item for the entire year, but i dont need another pink palette. The indie brands are producing incredible special and highly sparkly shades these days and pat's brand is no longer competing in this unique texture/finish category. Other brands like danessa myricks have also caught up here with her lightworks palettes.
Thank you 🙏 😘 I really your comment and the points you’ve made. We have lots of options and our spending power is precious. It’s okay to switch it up. 😘
Pinky/golds and mauves are very flattering on me, and I’m new to Pat McGrath. I only have a few products of hers, and neither of the Divine Roses. I feel like this palette is meant for people like me, and I’ll definitely pick this up, though I’ve yet to buy a Mothership at full price, and I don’t think I will start now. I understand that when brands attempt to expand their market, they run the risk of alienating core fans, and I wonder if that’s what is happening here. As a member of the expanded market, I appreciate her reaching out to me, but I sympathize with core fans.
I also want to mention that I’m much more comfortable spending $80+ on a palette I know I’ll really get a lot of use out of than one that is more experimental for me.
This point of view makes a ton of sense. Your comment about the core fans is good, but I’ll also note that the Divine Rose formulas are likely superior to the latest release-if you value what the baked formulas can give you. They also allow for a broad variety of looks in one palette. I watched Morgan Turner’s review of XI last night, and it seems the latest one can only offer pink looks. The original Divine Roses can do neutral, pink, light and dark. Just something to consider! In any case, enjoy these gorgeous palettes 💖
I do have all of the Motherships and particularly enjoy Mothership X, which I often (if not always) pair with Mothership 1. I picked up Mothership XI and my problem with it is that you can ONLY get a pink look. With Motherships VII, VIII, and even XIX, I felt like their was more variety in the looks you could create with their color stories. It’s a bummer. Had I gotten it from Sephora and not PML website, I might have returned it. What I will end up doing is pairing it with other Motherships so that I can get more neutral mattes at least. Interesting video. There is no question that the investors in PML are driving the ship b/c the pink trend was evident in all of the Bridgerton releases too.
This is such a great point about the other pink palettes and I appreciate you sharing your first-hand experience with XI. I love the Divine Rose duo in part because you can wear a gorgeous stealthy “boring” look or a bananas dramatic look-the structure of the palettes allows for so much variety.
Since you have all of them, what is your least favorite mothership?
@@SamanthaD89 I’m missing III Subversive and V Bronze Seduction. Subversive is on its way to me-I hope to receive it this week.
I’m happy to share a ranking video with my reasoning. A large part of it has to do with my specific coloring and what looks good on me, which of course might not be true for you. I can tell you I love Divine Rose I, Moonlit Seduction, Midnight Sun and Subliminal. Im a little cool and a little olive.
@@SamanthaD89 My least favorite is XIII, Divine Rose II.
I really enjoyed this video. Not just because I feel like the Pat McGrath that I loved is gone but the reality of how often this happens. People fall in love with something because it has a spark for them of some kind. Whether it's clothes, restaurants or beauty. ,Once it becomes popular higher profits margins, wider distribution and mass appeal take over and the magic is lost. I love your philosophy of get while it lasts and enjoy the heck out of it. I feel this way about Michael Kors. Before the ready to wear and overly logo'd excess he made the most beautiful clothing. I still have a blue dress from 2007. I wear it to this day it's incredible. But, for me, the magic is gone from the brand. So I will enjoy the heck out it until the next spark hits me.🎆
Ugh, yea! I had the most beautiful pair of wide legged black linen pants from Michael Kors from like 2007-ish. The linen was so heavy. I can’t imagine why I don’t have them now-they were impeccable. No logo, just a great cut and gorgeous fabric. You just can’t take anything for granted. 🕯️
I really enjoyed this video!!!! I started learning about Pat McGrath in 2020 so I love hearing the history of the past releases!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! 🥰😘
I have Subliminal and the Star Wars edition of Midnight Sun. I like them both but I’m glad I got them on sale.
Oh, yes! I love both of those palettes 😍 amazing special shades and super wearable mattes (for me).
@@InfinitegardenbyBethK same here! I have a pale olive skin tone, so the mattes in both are near daily shades for me.
@@malloryp8341 same here-light cool olive. Divine Rose I works for me, too. Moonlit Seduction has been super flattering as well.
This is an amazing, informative video! I love it, thank you! New subscriber. I really enjoy that you looked at the releases from the side of the buyer, the hard-core makeup fan and the brand. I didn't get back into makeup until 2019/2020. And I fell hard for eyeshadow palettes, my collection as quadrupled, lol. But, I have learned so much about my likes (love indie brands like Unearthly cosmetics and Sydney Grace) and my dislikes (too faced, and some other mainstream brands). It's all fun.❤
P.S. Martina Lily promoted this video and I am thankful I found her and you!
Martina is so sweet for doing that. I love her channel and watch all her videos. 🥰😘 I too went really crazy with makeup during COVID mostly because I was growing out my silver hair and it drastically changed my look. I felt like I needed to switch up how I do my makeup, and I just went nuts with online shopping.
Honestly, I was excited when I saw the new PML Mothership palette. It meant I was saving $200 Canadian (with taxes). I also have most of her palettes so I don’t feel like I’m missing out.
Yes. Same. 🎉
This is such a healthy point of view! 💖
Thank you so much for this video. It is especially astounding to me, that I also share a similar timeline to yours regarding my own PML journey with the Mothership palettes. I also completely agree that the first 3 Motherships are what truly demonstrates Queen Pat’s genius and totally educated me about high end makeup. I have those first 3, and am so grateful to have access to Pat’s artistry.
Those first three are chefs kiss for sure! I got Subversive on Monday and I’ve been exploring it-I’m surprised that it’s so much more wearable than I assumed. I’m so inspired!
Thank you a much for this video, definitely miss her old motherships….your hair is BEAUTIFUL btw!!!
Thank you for the kind words 🥰😘 I miss them, too.
What a kind beautiful video. I completely agree with you and instead of buying this new mothership got the first one, subliminal with a huge discount. I had been eyeing that one for ages and will get a lot of use out of it. As you said we have the older ones to enjoy and I'm happy with it.
Subliminal is so gorgeous! It’s so wearable for everyday and the special shades are out of this world. It’s so good, I hope you love it. 🥰😘
Me, too. It was $88 less 30% in a set with a lipgloss, so less than 50% of the MSRP plus a travel size blush, which I’ll definitely use since it’s one of my favorite shades. I bought sth else to push total to $100 or more to get the free gift.
This was absolutely wonderful! I resonated with so much of what you said. Especially the lack of baked shades in M10. Even though I love it, I knew we probably wouldn't get more baked shades. I went on a frenzy to find the single baked shades from the original kits (I already own all the big motherships + baked quads). At the time, I felt some guilt in purchasing them, but not anymore 😅. I appreciate all my baked shades even more.
Ooo, did you find the singles on the second-hand market!? Thank you for the kind words 🥰😘
@InfinitegardenbyBethK Yes, I did; mostly on Mercari. And you're very welcome.
Thank you so much for this appreciation video! I came to know Pat McGrath just recently, and I am sad that I will never experience the true excitement of a Mothership release (I agree with Alicia Archer - this one doesn't feel like a Mothership to me). I myself got me Sublime yesterday. (Btw, it's curious to me how on the day of Mothership 11 release Mothership 5 and 7 are the ones that sell out.)
Enjoy Sublime! Blitz Emerald is positively exquisite 🤩 it’s a super wearable palette for everyday, too!
This was so interesting to watch! Thank you! :) I just recently got into the Pat McGrath hype and picked up Moonlit Seduction during a sale. Even with the formula changed I don't have anything similar in my collection formula wise, it really is something special. Sad to see where this amazing brand is heading. I will be buying the first 3 motherships and Midnight Sun when I have the budget. I just hope none of them will be discontinued in the near future.
I hope you are able to get everything you are interested in! They have been such a joy for me. 💖
So interesting what you said about Midnight Sun - that it didn't appeal to the masses!
I actually love that palette a lot, it's like the ulti-ultimate fall palette.
Having said that, I do have olivey undertones in my skin. (I'm South-Asian, from Pakistan). And being born and bred in the Netherlands, I actually never found matching concealer and foundation shades. Eventually when I found out that I have greenish tint in my skin - a world opened for me! I now knew what to look for when doing makeup. What would flatter me the most.
And yes indeed - the colors in Midnight Sun look fab on me. (If I may say so myself haha).
If Divine Rose blew up because of Taylor Swift - it was exposed to the market that it would appeal to, perhaps Midnight Sun should be made 'famous' to the population it will most likely appeal to. Like Latin America, South-Asia.
I love this comment so much! 🥰🥰
I think Pat knew exactly what she was doing by creating a Mothership for everyone-maybe not expecting everyone to buy all of them.
I also have some light greenish undertones from my Eastern European father, and I find Midnight Sun very wearable for me. I understand what you mean about struggling to find complexion shades that match. I require a neutral tone, but a slightly olive tone would be even better for me. It’s been a struggle-foundations always always always looked too pink on me and I just kept going lighter and lighter because I didn’t understand what was going on 😫
Thank you so much for appreciating!
Love that you take the time to read and reply to every comment ♡
Lovely to read about your own experience, Midnight Sun seems like the underdog, but it's just 'misunderstood' haha.
For the tones and undertones: nowadays with all the inclusivity that's going on, there are so many liquid products that one can mix into their foundation to reach the match you desire. I also believe Charlotte Tilbury has base products with olive undertones.
Amazing breakdown of PML and the Motherships allure!!!
Thank you!! 🥰😘
What an interesting video!
I'm a bit bitter with the brand since they canceled my order on the glitch day (if you don't know there was a glitch in July 27th, palette was available, there was a 30% off promo code, they canceled my order and basically told me to replace my order but to pay full price lol)
I'm fed up with pink palettes, these are almost all of her latest releases. I'm a bit concerned because we don't get as many baked shades as we used to.
They offer many sales, i don't see the point to pay full price for it.
Oh, what an unfortunate customer experience!! I was observing the multiple release dates and discount codes-but I hadn’t heard a story like yours.
I think we’ve seen the last of the baked shades. I hope I’m wrong.
@@InfinitegardenbyBethK I don't know if you're a part of the Facebook group, but I think I'm the only one who got this issue.
I'd love a special release with a special palette with only blitz astral shades 😍
@@Sandycvgx I am a part of the Facebook group but I don’t post much beside comments. An all blitz astral mothership-no matter the price-would sell. I know it would.
Thank you for this very thorough breakdown on the PML motherships. I only have Huetopian Dream, and I LOVE that palette. I use it all the time. I was going to skip Mothership 11, but I couldn’t resist those two Astro blitz shades🥰. I’m excited to try a different Astro blitz formula that you made me aware of.
You’re welcome! 🥰😘 Enjoy Mothership Xi! It’s a beauty for sure. If any of her earlier palettes appeal to you, I’d recommend checking them out. The delicate baked formula is beautiful.

This video was very refreshing. I've been telling people I doubt Pat is in creative control of the brand, so it was nice to hear it from someone else. For me, that explanation is the only one that makes sense.
Motherships I-III are my favorites since my preferred aesthetic is dark, smoky, messy grunge, etc. Needless to say, I love VI as well.
Thank you for this video and sharing your journey with PML. I, like you, do hope the investors do Pat's name justice and go back to producing unique color stories.
Thank you so much for the kind comment 💖
It’s just a hunch-I certainly don’t know, but it’s just not the same. That high-fashion edge was exhilarating 🤩 I feel lucky to have these palettes and I plan to enjoy them.
@InfinitegardenbyBethK You're welcome. There was a private investor here and there, and the timeline fits. I'm with you, I miss that high-fashion edge of the Motherships, and I'll enjoy the Motherships I have 🙂
I got mothership 11 and it is STUNNING!!!! So wearable and every shade is just beautiful! I loved this video!! Thanks soooo much xx

Completely agree with you about Moonlit Seduction, the pink outrage when it launched was so unfounded. I love that palette with or without baked shades. Sunlit Seduction not so much…
Moonlit Seduction is excellent!! So many different looks, so much to explore. It lives up to the Mothership standard.
What a great video !! It made me want to bust out my older Motherships and use them !
Thank you 🥰 I hope you enjoy diving back into the Mothership magic 🤩
I love your white hair, suit you very well! Also, you remind me of Meryl Streep 😇
Love the calm way you explain and the CHARTS and inserts of everything, yes gurl yes!! Keep on doing the great work ♡
Would love to see more about motherships, like perhaps what Martina Lily did, swatching (perhaps comparing too) all baked shades of all motherships. Or what Mariam A has done, swatching all gold/ blues/ greens of Pat
Thank you for the kind words!! 🥰🥰 I’m glad you appreciate my charts and visuals. I can’t help it-they help me prepare and understand the subject I want to talk about. I’m glad you like it 😘
I would really enjoy making a video like that. Stay tuned! I love both of those creator’s channels 💖
Your channel is definitely something unique - glad I got this video in my recommendations!
Thank you! This is really good to see everything together and see how the palettes have evolved. I've chosen not to get Mothership 11 and have instead ordered Mothership 1 to get the cool colours with the four baked shades. This was £63 and included the shadow glue in the Xclusive offers tab. The same offer is available with the first 10 palettes. I doubt I'll buy another one in the future because of this new format and cheaper packaging.
Wow, that’s an extraordinary deal! Mothership I Subliminal is stunning and one of my very favorites. The mattes are so useful and the special shades are ethereal and perform beautifully. Enjoy!
Yes, it's amazing. I'm hoping there is a similar offer available for other countries. I'm really looking forward to having this Mothership, it's mentioned so often 💜 Also I should have mentioned earlier, I love the graphs and visuals in your video, it's really helpful to see 🥰 Thank you!
I bought Pat during the pandemic too. But I think I also had a lot of time to play with my makeup again. I may or may not buy Sunlit Seduction. If I do, it will be on sale. I think it will be very wearable. I am also aware that these have a shelf life and they need to be worn not just admired. I really appreciate your fair and balanced perspective on this. Thank you♥️
Yes, I was working from home and had more latitude to experiment. Because I was growing out my silver hair I wanted to try everything all over again. It was a lot of fun and I came to love the special shades.
I have the first 10. I passed on 11. I’ll love and use what I have.
I’ve been concerned about PM products showing up at TJMaxx. What does that mean?
I really enjoyed this history. Thank you.
Thank you, Leah! I wonder if they're going to TJ Maxx because she had unsold merchandise and she needed to liquidate it. It's concerning for sure.
I’m a Pat McGrath fan and I lover of all the “basic” color stories. I’m holding off on buying Mothership XII only because I don’t need it 🤪 and Pat will have a sale soon enough. Thanks for the great video.
She does basic so beautifully! There’s no doubt XI is super pretty 😍
I loved this, thank you ❤ I did buy mothership 11, I hope I like it. I own 5 motherships, this would be my 6th.
I’m so glad! 🥰😘 It’s SO PRETTY, and I am torn. I’m sure it will be a great choice for many people. Please let me know what you think! The lavender shades are what have me at the crossroads 😵💫
@@InfinitegardenbyBethK I've had it for a few days and had time to play with it and I hav some thoughts. Overall I like it, I will get lot of use out of it and I think the quality is there for the most part so I don't regret my purchase HOWEVER I think it's very mid toned which works very well for my tan deep skin tone but might not offer versitility for very fair or very dark skin.
I particularly love the 6 non special shades - The mattes are beautiful and the metallics are the lovely satin metalic formula which is usually only reserved from skinshow shade. The special shades are not as special as the baked special shades, they don't quite have the layering , tranformative, shifty qualities of a baked astral or the molten devine shine and glimmer of a blitz. Particularly that amythst shade which on the eye sadly looks like a standard metallic. For me I will use these special like a "normal" eyeshadow and not how I would usually use a special shade.
Some shades are very similar to past shades but again I have made my peace with this as I think that's a given - most people don't own multiple motherships or eyeshadow palletes in general, dups within ones personal makeup collection is really only an issue for the niche consumer who is a collector or enthusiast.
That wine / maroon top is a stunning colour on you ! ❤
Thank you! This is one of my favorite colors to wear 🍷
Your hair is gorgeous!! I don’t think I could pull it off with gray and look as young and beautiful as you do!😊
Ooooh, welcome to my channel!! I have a whole playlist on gray hair. 💖 it was an incredibly liberating experience for me to ditch the dye. Food for thought. 🥰😘
Beautiful hair. I love that you choose to keep it grey.❤
Thank you! I dyed it for 15 years and transitioned to my natural color in 2020-2021. It was a liberating experience 💖
I know Huetopian has a light pinky metallic and a mauvey matte shade (thus continuing the pink 'fever' of Mother Pat), but man, do I love that lilac glitter! 🤩 And the multichrome - perrrrfect one and done.
Yes, pity that it isn't in the baked formula, but I prefer the shade over the multichrome in DR2. I find the coral matte in there also very fresh and could work as a beautiful blush too. I follow Erin Nicole on RUclips and she created some wonderful looks with this palette.
I read a comment describing this palette as a 'fairy palette' - haha that's such a cute and fun way of describing it!
I really like Huetopian Dream, too! That vivid Cora matte is flattering on me and I agree that the multi chrome is super wearable. The DR II multi chrome shifts deep green, which not everyone loves. I have no regrets about any of the palettes I have-I just have so many now!
Thank you for the work you did in putting this video together! I really enjoyed
Thank you, Heather! 🥰😘
Fantastic thoughts, I totally agree
I couldn't resist buying this latest release, later on, I might order Divine rose Vll To say goodbye From pat to in view of events. We will enjoy his great talent with what we already have waiting for a release in which we will see again the show to which we were accustomed. A cordial greeting from Spain.
Hello! Thank you for the kind comment. Divine Rose I/ Mothership VII is wonderful-especially if you have a light skin tone and look good in cool tones. It is very flattering on me and I love it so much.
@@InfinitegardenbyBethK❤ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥I have been able to find a fantastic deal in the United Kingdom impossible not to buy. Immensely happy because two mothership motherships will arrive soon, I resisted thinking it was boring.
But taking into account that everything can change with the signature (let's hope not) I'm not going to let it pass by without doing anything, I wanted it to be so. And on the official website at a good price, luckily also more a blush gift also comes to Spain mothership Xl.
Maybe Pat isn't that involved, I can't regret not getting them in time.
I can say that my only fault in the collection would be number 4, in any case "you never know what will happen in the future"
Strong hug with lots of happiness ☺ ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love this video. Thank you for making it.
Thank you for the kind words, Collette 💖
This was wonderful. Really enjoyed your video, thank you. Subscribed!
Thank you! 🥰😘 I am so glad you’re here.
Thank you for such a respectful and compassionate breakdown of this whole situation! I can understand why diehard fans were upset, and I can also understand investor pressure to put out something that performs. I just bought my first Mothership (Sublime) last year, and grabbed Huetopian a few weeks ago when Pat's sale happened to line up with 15% cash back from Rakuten so I basically got it half off 😯So I have an old and a new. I wasn't as bothered because I still have all the others to discover. I think my next move will be collecting the rest of the Holy Trinity as various sales as they pop up!
Thank you for the sweet comment. Subliminal is absolutely stunning IG cool neutrals suit you. If you like warmer tones, V and VI are great. Midnight Sun didn’t sell as well but it’s an absolute stunner if you have olive tones. Have fun!
@@InfinitegardenbyBethK Thank you for the advice! I have neutral undertones and brown eyes so the eyeshadow world is my oyster 😂I'd like to play with cool tones more since I tend to reach for warm color stories, so subliminal is probably next on my list!
Love this video … I bought it … think I own it … will try it tomorrow keep you posted . I am a collector she is brilliant. Just think she isn’t inspired right now .
I hope you love it! I understand being a collector (all too well 😂). It looks beautiful for sure.
Totally agree with you. There was an influencer that looked up about pat mcgrath looks like the company is not doing as well as it was so she is catering to what investors want not what her customer base wants
.
This just makes so much sense and it’s the way the world goes. It’s really hard to watch and I think a lot of us feel similarly.
Fantastic video, thanks! Sorry if I missed it - but are all the motherships that previously had baked special shades having those phased out and replaced with the new formula? I hope not! 😬
No one has said that, but I think people are afraid that they might not be around forever.
Thank you for a great video, well articulate and comprehensive. You've covered it all perfectly. 💕
Thank you, kindly! I'm so glad you enjoyed it ❤️
I cannot WAIT to watch this later! x
Hay, girl!! 🥰😘
just came across your channel and first off love your hair! : ) really enjoy how interesting and informative this is! I'm always confused and don't know what to get from Pat McGrath since those palettes are not affordable at all lol anyway, great job!
Hey, thanks! I’m guessing from your profile pic that you might be a silver sister, too! 🥰😘
From what I’ve learned over the past four years of playing with these, my recommendation is to start by looking at the mattes in the palette. Do they look like your go-to? Could you use them every single day? If you can, I’d say you might then look at the standard metallic shades. Do those look right? Could you wear those colors most days? And then last look at the special shades. Are they inspiring? Do you want to experiment with them? Do they spark joy? If all of that seems present, it might be worth it. But that’s for you to decide 💖
that's is awesome advice! thank you and yes! just found another silver sister😆 🥰😘@@InfinitegardenbyBethK
Great video. I pulled out my MS1 this last week to experience the glory of what this brand was. The Top putter special shade is my favorite one and some of all time. I was actually thinking about buying the other two of the original trio for the exact reason you said. How sad.
I LOVE Subliminal-the special shades are ethereal and so elegant. I find the other six shades so useful and wearable.
I’m in my 50s and have a lot of these. I’d love to see how you use/apply them! I get overwhelmed and I’m good at makeup. 😂
Yes, they are overwhelming! I have a few Mothership Videos in my “Makeup Obsession” playlist. And more to come!
@@InfinitegardenbyBethK I'll go find them. Thank you!
I never realized that the special shades were in different color pans. Interesting. The first one I bought was Moonlit Seduction because i love cool toned shades. Next, I bought Bronze Seduction and Divine Rose II. I am still eyeing Subversive then I think I'm done. I'll have a nice selection of shades.
I just got my Subversive palette today-it’s gorgeous. I have to say Sublime is a magnificent cool toned palette, too. The mattes are perfectly wearable for me every day.
This was a beautiful video. I own all the motherships 1-10 and I am planning on doing exactly that. Love and use them more now that PML is testing the waters with all of the shades of divine rose. Hopefully mothership 12 is the one that surprises us all ❤
You have a stunning collection! I hope you enjoy using them without caution 🤩 thank you for the kind words. 💖
Here from Marian’s channel.
I tried to look for some information on investors. She got the first investors in 2018. Apparently the investor exited in 2021 and there is a new investor group. It does seem that the brand is suffering from the private equity curse. The PE owners need to squeeze out costs to get more profits and in doing so degrade the brand. It has happened in all industries. Very sad.
I decided to order it because with the new eye base duo it was a good price…and I do have all her palettes. And I really like the color story.
That said, will have to watch the next launches…and see what happens. Maybe the end of new adds to the collection.
I did buy buy a back up of subliminal…my absolute favorite…at a great price.
Thank you for stopping by and for sharing this information! I hope you enjoy your new palette 🥰😘
Have a great Sunday...appreciate your support. You are such a great friend.❤😊
Enjoy your Sunday, Tom! So nice to hear from you 🥰
Realy interesting, thank you! I am not buying this one but thinking about the old ones !
You’re so welcome! The older ones are glorious 💖
Thank you for a thorough review.
Thank you! I wonder if we’ll get another mothership this year. 🤔
@pattyalonso sent me over as she enjoyed ur video so much and wow I’m so glad she did. I feel exactly the same way you do. I too have an august birthday and always bought the palettes as a gift to myself. I was so excited for 11 cause this year is my 50th bday and I was again going to by my mama Pat palette but I’m not so sure I will. I think if I do buy it it will certainly be later on when there is a good sale. This video was great and you have a new subscriber here. Thank you for sharing your views. ❤❤❤❤
Welcome! And happy birthday 🎊🎂🎁 I hope you have a great one 🥰😘
@@InfinitegardenbyBethK thank you so much!! Happy Birthday to you also!!💚💚💚
Wonderful video, and the most sensible and rational one I've seen about this topic. This is making me want to run and fill in the palettes I don't yet have from her first six motherships! However, if I haven't wanted them in all this time, then it is probably very silly to go rush to get them now! I think it's Decadence that I do really want. Because I prefer cooler tones, Midnight Sun and Bronze Seduction just aren't for me, though they are gorgeous, to be sure!
Decadence is great, but I personally gravitate to a few of the shades and tend to leave the others. It’s fabulous, though. If you like cools, Subliminal is divine. The neutral colors are great for every day. I suppose you have to likes blues and violets, but that’s a great cool one.
This was an amazing and so informative! I agree with everything you said 💗💗💗
Martina! 💖💖 I love your channel. You have me wanting the new Isamaya palette 🤩
@@InfinitegardenbyBethK Aw thank you so much!! I'm just new to your channel but have subbed instantly! You are so lovely 💗💗
Welcome!! 💖
I am so happy to see video where someone is taking a stance. Everyone keeps saying it's s repeat but I will still buy it. . .madness
Thank you, Jamilla 🥰 it’s just not for me. The more reviews I watch, the more I am convinced I do not need it.
This video is amazing! Thank you so much for the history--I learned a ton. Question: If the newer Motherships do not have the baked special shades, do the older Motherships that are made now also do not have the baked formula? Did they change the formula in those older ones to sell now?
Thank you! This is such a good question. I ordered Subversive and it arrived today with the classic baked formula-so pretty! I think some of us have a hunch that they might be an endangered formula ultimately. I have not yet heard of someone ordering an early mothership and getting pressed glitter.
@@InfinitegardenbyBethK thank you!!!! I am thinking of ordering Subversive myself so it is good to know that PML hasn’t changed the formula!!!! Thanks again!
This video was lovely ❤ very interesting to see, I have been a fan of Pat McGrath work for a long time, but before Huetopian Dream I was kinda scare of her palettes! After buying that one, I felt just like you said, I felt like I could see and live a little bit of the glamour of the high fashion world! After exploring more with makeup, my second was Subversive and I started to love the artistry, so I’m feeling just like you with this new one, I’m trying to keep an open mind but we know what companies want at the end of the day :/ hahah
Thank you for the kind words 🥰😘I just received my Subversive this Monday, and it’s extremely inspiring 🤩 so much to explore.
I don’t own any Pat McGrath palettes, the brand has just never appealed to me-same with the Charlotte Tilbury-not for any reason; I’m sure the eyeshadows are great.
I think if she made a palette with the special shades only I might consider buying it. I enjoyed the video-nicely done.
An all special shade palette would be amazing!! 🤩
This video exceeded my expectations! Great dive!
Oh wow! I’m so glad. Thank you!
Great Pat McGrath lesson I was directed to your page I don't own any of the palettes and do not plan on it but i really enjoy watching makeup videos. Makeup has a shelf life of 12-24 mos is it possible that some of the colors are duplicates because of that shelf life, or that the original palettes aren't available anymore, or the colors are the most used and loved?
Hello! Yes I think the duplicates might be because in this case they were perfect-possibly. The astral sparkly shade is flawless and it’s possible she wanted to use it again. It’s neutral and unbelievably sparkly and wet looking.
Shelf life is a good point to bring up. My understanding is that the baked shades are more stable than pigments in a wet medium.
FWIW I think that window you described has closed haha. It's too bad what is happening to PMG Labs but it's the story of pretty much everything that takes off during late-stage capitalism. Isamaya Beauty is giving me a lot of the same vibes as early PMG so might be worth checking out
Ugh, I know you're right, I just didn't want to be the one to call it. I have been enjoying the reviews of the latest Isamaya palette reviews very much. Martina Lily has a great one. I am absolutely tempted.
@@InfinitegardenbyBethK Someone has to! I only have the first Industrial palette. Took me a bit to wrap my head around it but it was fun exploring and playing around. The topper shades in it are so great. Not as sparkly as the Pat's Astral shades so they are great when I want to amp something up subtly
Best video I've seen on PM and I've seen alot!
That’s a huge compliment. Thank you! 🥰
Love the hydratermission haha!
I’m a 🤡
Wow! Very telling! Artists, fashion professionals and business persons think very differently and you can tell with PMG that the heightened priority of appeasing the investors has crept in at every release over the last few years...I have repurchased Mothership 6-Midnight Sun (and no not the deceptively repackaged Star Wars version of Mothership 6) but I have not purchased any new since the Mothership 6-release or the Celestial Divinity-release (whichever came first)...Yes Mothership 7-Divine Rose 1 is at every Ulta and Sephora in the country...and yes it is praised for how "wearable" and "everyday friendly " it is but...In my opinion creating and releasing a "safe, soccer-mom-pink palettes" like Mothership 7-11,or, the Voyeuristic whatevers, or, even the sedative Bridgeton collection palettes defeats the purpose or intention of the high fashion, iconic, artistry that PMG had been promoting years beforehand...There are plenty of makeup brands that provide everyday, "workhorse makeup" or "the happy-hour glitter bombs" and... I feel very comfortable keeping that kind of makeup in my office's desk drawer (just in case)...but...None of those item are high fashion or iconic and the artistry is intentionally limited...Most importantly...If those brand makers were to set a price point of $125 for any of it, I would think that I was being pranked or punk'd...So yes...just like you I am using and enjoying my "OG-Mothership palettes and quads" and hoping that Dame Pat will find her way back to her roots...
Yes-the shift from high fashion to safe bestsellers wasn’t handled well enough to make sense for the brand. Thank you for you super thoughtful comnent.
Do you think the past Motherships are going to be the same formula. I only ever bought her first large holiday palette and I was disappointed. Never bought anything again. Very insightful video thank you. Oh btw what is on your eyes today?
I’m not sure how the formulas differ from the big holiday palettes, but a clue is that the Motherships are made in Italy. Sometimes her six pans are made in the USA, and the formulas seem different. Beyond that I’m not sure.
In this video I’m wearing Lisa Eldridge’s Myth palette. I’ll have a review up this coming Sunday!
I’m glad I bought Huetopian Dream because I prefer it way more than divine rose 1 and 2 and I think I would also love Sunlit Seduction way more than those two. I only wish I could trade 😂 lol idk if it’s worth it knowing that I have those 3 already. Very informative video. I’m sorry for those who want the baked shades but I prefer the more sparkly version baked or not.
Huetopian Dream is gorgeous! I think you’re not alone about being lukewarm on or just not focused on the naked shades. Maybe the PML team decided to risk it because a lot (maybe most) of her customers didn’t really mind. Thanks for your comment!
@@InfinitegardenbyBethK Appreciate the response! You are probably right. I know a lot of people that are disappointed with this release tho, and I admit I was disappointed with the color story at first too, but those astral blitz shades look very good, I’m tempted to get this if I find it on a good discount. I still confused a little on who buys all these rose palettes, because her die hard fans have been disappointed with the last few motherships. I bought mine second hand so idk if I count.
This is very informative. Thank you for making this video!! ❤
I’m so glad you enjoyed it 🥰😘
Love how you presented the timeframe of her releases over the short time she has been releasing makeup. It is hard to believe she has only been releasing makeup since 2015. I remember “waiting in line”‘to order her mothership palettes and things would sell out so fast. I understand she has investors and those pinky shades serve a large population, including myself but it is sad to see the creativity she has been known for simply fade away. I would say Mothership V is one of my favorites of the mothership palettes. So VI was the last one that was truly unique as every palette starting with VII on has been different varieties of pink. I was disappointed that she didn’t give maybe a last hooray to her diehard, long term fans t something unique with Mothership X, but she went back to the pinks.
The only way I will purchase anything from her brand is during a sale. It is not worth it for a palette that is less than exciting, especially paying $128 for special shades that no longer exist. What is frustrating and disappointing is that consumers notice the changes, comment about such changes on her social media, yet she never responds. I wish she would just come out and address the concerns but she just keeps thinking folks will just continue to purchase, which i think folks will continue to purchase but her diehards will probably hold off. I get the idea of catering to the masses but that demographic isn’t always the most loyal, so we shall see what’s next with her brand❤
I remember “waiting in line” too! I even remember when her lipsticks were in long skinny lab sample tubes before the sexy lip bullets. It’s all evolved so quickly.
I have been watching the IG comments section, and I wonder if Pat is still working the controls of her account. The language she uses to reply to positive comments isn’t like the language she used to use. It feels off. I think there’s a social media team managing this and working hard to control the conversation. It’s a bummer.
@@InfinitegardenbyBethK OMG, I remember those lippies too!!! Wow, things have really evolved for her brand, some fantastic and others not soo much. I actually really love sooo many of her products besides just the motherships. I’m sitting here with a cart of a few thighs hinges from her website now since she is once again having a sale. I agree with her social media team, it really doesn’t seem like her and when was the last time she got on IG and did a tutorial or talked about her products the way Natasha Denona and Danessa Myricks do these days. I’ve also read that folks who make negative comments on her social media platforms get blocked and that isn’t a good look for her brand.
Hey, I’m still buying her products, too! I LOVE her lipsticks and glosses. I just bought the complete Nude Venus lip kit and I have at least five of her powder blushes. Her products amazing! I have no plans to stop 😂
I have DR I, II, and hutopian dream, and I thought they were all similar but I ended loving all of them, especially hutopian dream 😂
Huetopian Dream is gorgeous-punchy and warm. 😍
Great video Best vid review
Thank you! 🥰😘
This was an amazing video. Thank you for doing it
You’re welcome, Leazette! 🥰😘 Thank you for the kind comment.
Ive found that the new formula even with eye primer and artistry wand creases on me ..baked shades lasted all day 😢
That’s super interesting, and a shame. I know I gravitate to the delicate astrals use sparingly and they perform perfectly.
Beautiful video. Well said. I just ordered Subversive as well
Thank you, kindly! 🥰😘 I’m excited to explore Subversive.
