- Hey friends - I hope you're all keeping well!!! This is the first tutorial I've ever done so I hope it's okaaay! Let me know your thoughts - apologies that I don't have any sheet music, but I hope the guided walkthrough and midi download are helpful to at least some of you 😊 I'd love to know what you think and if anything can be improved or made more useful, plus I'd love to hear any tunes you'd like to see broken down like this, so please drop them in the comments! ✌️
The midi download is available below - import it into whatever midi software you have (ie synthesia, or a DAW like garageband/logic etc) at 120bpm to see all the notes! 🎹

Thanks as always, and keep well ❤️🌍
I am learning to play again while recovering from a brain aneurysm and stroke. You have no idea how much your teaching method inspires me to play again. I am truly grateful! 😊
This is maybe the nicest comment I have ever got. Thank you for the kind words, and all the best for the recovery ❤️❤️ always happy to give more advice if I can, please feel free to ask!
And in turn, YOUR story inspires me to play more!
Lately I've been paying closer attention to the magic that happens when a specific action (performing/teaching/care-giving) actually creates joy/learning/love, basically out of thin air. And how, once given, it radiates outward from person to person in ways that we can't always see, and will never fully know. But seeing little bits of this process, like how Hank created this joy/teaching from scratch, it radiated to 28mitchell1, who then created more music and shared their inspiring story which radiated outward to all us. Millions of these invisible ripples are affecting us constantly through every interaction. And they all originated from specific acts by specific people, known or unknown to us. My point in all of this is that we all need to better recognize and appreciate when and how this happens, because this invisible flow of joy/learning/love is actually THE ONE TRICK that will allow us to evolve beyond the hate, division, fear, greed, and ego which seem to be regaining traction and slowing our progress toward an enlightened society. You know, one that aliens would be willing to visit. I'm just sayin'...
Thanks so much for this wonderful tutorial, you really helped me decode some of the magic of that track and gave me an idea of how to play around using the same ideas without being limited to what’s on the track
I just started playing at 73 years old, your talent inspires and intimidates. Great vibe and great talent, thanks!
Thanks so much my friend!!! Always a good day to start learning ☺️☺️ enjoy the journey! ❤️🎹
this is the best day of my life
edit: now that I've watched it, I have to say it is the best day of my next life as well. Thank you so much, I can't describe how good it sounds!!
Awww thanks so much my friend, I'm really glad you liked it :))
I really appreciate you doing this. As a guitarist, I’m used to picking any song and finding 47 tutorials available. As a new self taught pianist that doesn’t read music well, I love when I find a great piano tutorial.
Ah thanks so much my friend - I really appreciate that and glad if it helps 😊 I guess piano isn't as popular as guitar aha. Thanks again and apologies for the late reply!
Really beautifully done.. you are a natural teacher with a warm and fun style so please keep it up. I've loved this song for so long but never dared attempt it on the piano until yesterday and can't believe I'm playing it so well in just a few hours after learning with you. A huge thanks and will check out your other videos now :)
Thank you Henry, what an amazing song and you play it unbelievably well - currently learning it as we speak so wish me luck - Gary :)

Not just about the song but in technique a chord fundamentals, Kudos ;-)

I have learned so much from this video thank you for taking the time to make this and share it. You have great musicality - love your runs etc.
Fyi I pay about £15 a month for a video song tutorial website atm. Would easily switch to yours if you did the same because of how you embelish the songs and explain how to get there
Henry - very generous and passionate offering. Seems things are going well for you in London where the challenges are huge. Keep up the wonderful open spirit and enjoy. Cheers, Tony from Australia
Thanks so much Tony! I really appreciate the kind words 😊 and things are good thanks! I am a little outside London in a city called Reading (it's not very fancy, but it is a lot cheaper!). I hope life is treating you well in Australia!!! 😊🌏
You made some awesome phrasing choices!!!
Love it!!!
literally all I needed these days
Yeah, great tutorial. Love this song. I played around with it before, but never really learned it. this will inspire me to finish learning it. Thank you.
Ah thanks so much Ray, I am very glad if it's any help! Enjoy learning it, it's so much fun to play! 🎶:))
Thank you so much! This is such an awesome tutorial and I can't believe it's your first. The way you explained that little bluesy bit around 11:06 made perfect sense first time after I watched other videos timelessly. You really helped me learn this song. Thank you so much.
Sublime. You know, like a lime? You're below that. That's how good you are 👌👌👌
I've enjoyed watching you grow as a musician over the years - multi-platinum or not. Great content and an inspiration to us younger gay guys out there who are interested in music, musical theory, instrumentation, etc. Keep on, mate.
Ah thanks so much David, that means a lot. Keep well and happy music'ing :))
Hi Henry, great to see you back again. That was absolutely fascinating. Learning to play has been a life long ambition which I have yet to fulfil (bit late at my age!). Watching you is an absolute inspiration and I am sure it is to others. Stay safe and keep up the good work... Cheers 🍷🍷

Beautiful music! Love the Bruce Hornsby sound!
This was such a great tutorial. You explained it really well. Amazing that you said this was your first one. Also I love Bruce Hornsby, had no idea he played this, but with all the hammer-ons (sorry don’t know how to spell this!) it sounds like his classic style.
Great tutorial. Thank you!
Beautifully made! Thank you!
great Job Henry1!!
👏👏👏 🙏🙏🙏
What a pleasant surprise.. Keep these tutorials coming ( make you feel my love - B Dylan ?)
Thanks for posting this Henry. I know it takes a lot of time! And you're too cute! : )
Great job
Thanks Gary! ☺️☺️
Oh man. This is wonderful. I want to be good at piano. I've started learning later in life and it's so cool. I really wish I started younger! I'd be so good by now lol
Great job Henry. Would love to see you do the end of the innocence
Awsome Henry!
Thank you. Your piano skills are obviously incredible but your tutorials are wonderful as well. Would love a Fairytale of New York tutorial (I've noticed that's one of your favorite songs). Blessings
Thanks so much Joe, I really appreciate the kind words, and apologies for the late reply! I will try and get one done before Christmas :)) I hope you're doing good! 😊❤️🎶🎹
This is great .!!!!!
:0 now I can relearn it thank youuuuu xx
I hate you so much for being so talented LOL . Seriously great tutorial buddie , just wish i knew enough music theory to follow it :) Keep up the good work and stay safe my friend x
Amazing!!!
Great tutorial the term for hammer on is slip note.
Wow this is exactly what I was looking for!! A video that explains both the theory and the practical application. Will you be posting more music tutorials?
👀🎹👌 more more more, please 😊
This is absolutely incredible. Brilliant arrangement. MIDIs are my favorite way of learning on piano. Can you put one out for the full song?
Henry this is great dude. Best cover yet. How did you learn it?
Ah thanks so much Sam! I learnt it by ear, so really just listened to the Justin Vernon recording and tried to break it down into really small manageable bits to learn, then stuck them together. I sometimes find slowing the video down in the video settings a really useful tool as RUclips doesn't change the pitches, so you can hear the same thing just a bit slower, and give yourself a bit more time to pick out notes 😊 I hope that helps and thanks again, super glad you like it! 😊
Great job!!! If I was a beginner, sure, that would be a bit much / and maybe too fast. But that’s what stop and rewind is for. Such a beautiful song. Do musicians really play the left hand so spread out in concert, or no? Super challenging. Perhaps with practice I can stick it every time. For now seems crazy
Thanks Shaun! Glad it is helpful :)) I often use the RUclips controls to play the video at half speed, it works a treat which I've found useful. And I suspect so with the left hand - wide voicings can sound really nice so I wouldn't see why not to do it live :p They can be easier if you play almost behind the keys as in your hand is closer to you. An example being your pinky could be down on the note c, whilst leaning against the vertical part of the d next to it, and your thumb could be down on the second e above with it's left side against the vertical part of the d next to that e - if that makes sense - playing back of the keys rather than trying to play them on the top surface. This way gives you a bit more space with white notes ☺️ I hope that helps!
thank you so much.
This is an incredible tutorial! Criminally low viewership, sorry to see that! Appreciate your content alot.
Ah thanks so much Narino, I really appreciate it :))
Thank you please do some more
I want full Version cover plz 🥺
Outstanding tutorial! I am in the process of learning music theory to add to my beginning piano skills. I am wondering what it takes to get where you are being able to fly between chords and different inversions like you do so effortlessly. Can you give me a brief run down of practice time and scales? Love Bruce Hornsby and I enjoy your renditions. Thank you.
I’m such a beginner I quit on level three when little but I bought BonIvers sheet music is this identical? I love your music too wish you lived next door I need lessons and could listen to you all day!!
You can make me love you, actually
Beautifully played, I loved the tutorial. Marry me, haha
Note: A hammer-on on a piano is called a “Grace note”. Hopefully this helps!
Ahhh!!! I knew it was something like that ahaha, it's been said before :p I will include it in a future video :)) thanks Ethan, and I hope you're well :)))
Any way you could show us how you do the chorus? ❤
Oh man, I must learn how to play the piano. Any tips?
The "hammer on" is called a grace note
Always enjoying your piano performance. Hope you are ok this days?
you have a nice pianosound! What pianosound is that?
Thank you! It is the Ravenscroft 275 vst by VI Labs I think if I remember correctly ☺️☺️
@@HenryNewbury thank you!
👏👏👏
When I'm trying to import midi files to Musescore, I'm getting an empty screen, no notes. Same thing in a different program. Any clue why ?
It’s called a ‘grace note’, Henry. Thankyou for the tutorial.
Thanks Des, I appreciate that :) funny how I never picked up on that before now 😛 I hope the tutorial is useful ☺️
Please do the chorus 🙏
Hey Henry! I would really like to know how you learnt Tom Odell’s ‘Another Love’ was that by ear?
That is excellent lesson
Lots technically to learn I am a beginner intermediate but love learning
The dminor d,a,f is being identified as dmiin 11 but I don't think that is correct to it basically a dmin as you describe
Is that correct
Thanks so much Tracy! I am very glad if it helps :))
And hmm if it's the left hand and the notes are just d, a and f then I would personally call that a d minor voiced with the third at the top. A dmin11 would imply the 7th, 9th and 11th notes all being added, which would be the notes c, e and g respectively mixed in with the 1, 3 and 5 of the dminor triad (ie some ordering of d, f, a, c, e, g which are the 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 to make up dmin11) which you could also call a C Major triad over a d minor triad. Anyways, this combination of notes could definitely happen in this song and when playing them software might then tell you it's a dmin11, which would be correct, but getting super bogged down in the exact namings of the chords isn't thaaat important so long as you are playing the notes you want to play :)
In summary, a dm11 is just an extension of a dm :)
I'm not sure if that's a reaaally useful answer but let me know if you still have questions! 😊 And thanks again!
Is it possible to get the sheets for this ? :))
Why dont you play in origina e flat minor ? Its harder?
I actually think the original is Bb Major / gminor but may be wrong - but the Justin Vernon / Bon Iver version which I first loved is in C Major so this is from that :p I might do a tutorial in the original key if it would be useful as TBF it has some great piano lines ☺️☺️
Do one on: The Way It Is - Bruce Hornsby
Hi, I love so much your vids, it will be soo cool if you do a train wreck cover by James Arthur 🥺
how many piano keys should i buy for this to play?
If you're going for a keyboard, if you can't get full 88 keys I would recommend getting as close to that as possible. 76 or 73 I think is the next step down, which is a good size - convenient to move around without being maaaasssive and can play almost everything :) You can of course go smaller, it's just a question of how much space you are willing to lose to make up for convenience and smaller size. I hope that helps! :)
thank u

Do some more tutorials Henry! Good this one.? The way it is tutorial??
Awesome video!
Just wondering:
Is it possible to make a video about the equipment you use and the programs you record your music with?
