    Nice review. Correct me if I'm wrong, in Japan doesn't they skive with the bevel down mostly? Because I remember buying a skiving knife in the beginning when I started this craft, and it was sold as a right handed beveler (with the bevel down) and I have always done it that way and feel like I have good control and get good results skiving that way. And European skiving knives are as you say bevel up when skiving.

    While I appreciate the product reviews, I don't think I've ever seen a negative review on the channel here. If all the tools you review are good, which are the best? When you don't call out any faults or rank the tools compared to one another, it feels a bit more like an advertisement than a review.

      Thank you for your comment. The reviews are done to show how the tools work and if there were any particular issues they would be pointed out. Using tools is a very personal experience. By showing how they work for Nigel (or me) and giving feedback on how they work feel and look, the hope is that when looking to purchase you have more information to add to you reason to buy. A comparison video would be a personal choice and the tool that worked best for one person or appealed aesthetically, would be different for each individual.

    Tool review! I'd just like you to know your old videos on leatherworking are what helped me to get started; I've just made a flashlight holster and a journal cover, and am currently working on a pair of wallets. Thanks again!

    I ran out years ago to get my Armitage slickers. How do you think these edgers compare to the Montana Edger? Did you notice any puckering on the tight inner angles?

    • @samg8822
      @samg8822 9 месяцев назад

      I (Sam) have not noticed any puckering on the inner edges. But have not used a Montana edger so can’t give a comparison.

      @@samg8822 thank you for the reply. I do a lot of very tight, probably unadvisedly tight, inside corners and curves on leaves, so I'm always on the lookout for these types of edgers/bevelers. I've got a single Montana Edger that's been doing it for me the last few years, but it's a little fat on either side of the cutting face; the shorter toes mostly make up for that.

      I have just put the JunLin tool next to Ron's Montana and the JinLin is about 1mm narrower.
      The construction is similar, and Ron's tool also has the lovely deep grove on the back.
      I imagine, if you are getting a tight corner bevel with Ron's tool, you may get in tighter with JunLin's tool due to it being thinner.
      Certainly, I was impressed with 5mm but have not yet tried it any smaller.

      @@ArmitageLeather thank you! That sounds very promising. I love the Montana, but it is fatter to either side of the cutting area than my other edge bevelers, so these might help cut down some of the frustration caused by my own design decisions.

    This was a timely video to see as I just got my first skiving knife yesterday. I have a question about sharpening if you don't mind....After I sharpened mine I noticed that as I ran my fingernail along the back side I could see the edge deform ever so slightly. A dark spot on the face, just at the edge, would track along with my fingernail. Would that be normal to see? The brand is Wuta and I paid about $19 (US) for a pair, left handed and flat. It is labeled as 420B Martensitic Stainless

      What you're describing sounds like a burr, which is a sign that it is time to turn it over and do a few strokes to remove that burr.

    Nigel - you may help the community by letting everyone know that Seiwa has closed down. Meaning there won't be any Tokonole production unless someone buys the Tokonole name.
    I learned this from Jo at JH Leather in a recent podcast and read several statements from Seiwa.

      They are undergoing a restructuring of the company. I doubt they will discontinue their bestselling product, but then nothing is certain at the moment.
