Channelling Al Jarreau right here but with an extended 'scat' singing. Composed by Chick Corea in the early 70s, Spain has become a jazz standard with different artists covering it. Al Jarreau added the lyrics in one of his 1980s album (can't remember the title). Interestingly Bobby McFerrin also performed this standard with Chick on the piano. Excellent rendition. If anyone out there is interested in 'voice' as an instrument, Bobby McFerrin is a good study. Sorry I digress but can't help it jazz is my passion. So there you go. Thanks Tyra.
the album is titled "This Time" and it's the fourth studio album Al.
He's copying Al Jarreau's scats. That's not exactly in the spirit of jazz singing since scatting is an EXTREMELY personal thing. Katrina Velarde's take is more in line with the right spirit. Gary Valenciano even tries to copy Jarreau's vocal quality such as when he sings "Brighter days...." Look at other Gary Valenciano videos and tell me if his vocal quality is the same as in this video. It isn't. It's too much of a rip off of Al Jarreau for my taste. Even when GV sings the song live it's still basically the same - a not so unique version of AJ's studio original.
@@jaime8318 Its a cover....not many singers can cover this song...have you tried covering it? Al Jarreau is dead...nobody alive today covered this song, except Gary....Covering is literally copying....you shouldn't have watched this vidz..it made you bitter...
@@kikootoyat6238 how much do you know about singing? Do you any understanding of jazz? It's one thing to sing a song following the melody line. It's quite another thing to rip off another singers scat lines. In much of this "cover" he even mimics Al Jarreau's vocal quality which is totally off putting. Its like someone coming along and singing "It's A Wonderful World" with the raspiness of Louie Armstrong as if trying to SOUND like Louis Armstrong when they otherwise dont sound like Louis Armstrong at all. That's what this dude is doing while he is singing...Lastly, what does Al Jarreau being dead have to do with ANYTHING?

Met him when he was 10 in the Cultural Center of the Pholippines (CCP) production and staging of "Oliver" where he was The Artful Dodger. He was already very talented way back. I would say he was a prodigy. When he was 17 or 18, he blew up and became a pop/jazz singer. His live concerts drew 40-50,000 people in venues like Araneta Coliseum. Aside from his talent, he was and is a very humble person.
