Great little baking show! I have been searching for some ideas to make my own snacks. The flapjack has always been the great standby. Thanks for this one Manon and I look forward to the next episode.
Some great recipes, love using Nutella on rice cakes as a go to snack for me great for running but can be messy also lead to a Nutella addiction! Top tip for Nutella, when you have run out and can't scrape any more from the tub, fill it with hot milk and stir it round till it all melts, makes a great hot chocolate! Looking forward to trying some of the recipes!
My favorite riding food is rice cakes, I got a rice cooker for christmas I have being trying different rice cake recipes and eating them during and after my indoor training with the help of GCN.
Finally made the flapjacks last night with my daughter! We used sunflower seeds, peanuts, cashews, and dried apricots. They are delicious! Now I need to ride 😎
Love this video and Manon. Miss her from GCN already! Also happy that the GCN Shop restocked the Plant-Based Cyclist and Cyclist Cookbook. Out of stock for a bit but back. I just placed my order. I'll think of Manon every time I make ride snacks for the jersey pocket. Chef's Kiss!
Spookily this was released just after I had made another batch of flapjack from the Plant Based Cyclist Book (even though I am not a plant based cyclist, the book has great recipient and has loads of useful information on nutrition). Unfortunately, I realised after I started that I had used the last of my bananas in my pre-ride baked oats so I had to adapt and replaced the banana with marmalade. I’m pleased to say it worked!
Some great recipes there I’ll be sure to try all 3. Getting sick of my lazy option of throwing 2-3 cashew Lara bars in my pocket and buying a snickers or ice cream while on the road. Was thinking of getting a ultralight stove this year and try making myself a warm cup of tea mid ride this year as a treat. Also a step towards actually doing some kind of bike tour.
Never thought l would see or hear this rather.... GCN + Reggae lol (from about 7:30), made my day. So it must be true that 'Nobody can stop Reggae' as Lucky Dube sang. Good show been meaning to make something along these lines thanks a lot.
Great video!!! Do I keep in the fridge? For how long? The uncooked options I'm not sure is gonna work for me. I live in a tropical weather. But I'm gonna try! 😍
Sweet! For the dried fruit, I recommend dates, figs, cranberries and/ or a few glacé cherries, all chopped of course. For the nuts, try pecans, hazelnuts and/ or pistachios. And use jumbo rolled oats. 😉
I used to love the energy bars from Zipvit before they stopped making them. Home baking is good though and presumably is cheaper? More cooking ideas please. I loooove food!! 😋
idea: make them bar-shaped and wrap them in baking paper (non-stick side in). my thinking is that the non-stick baking paper would still be clean enough to be re-used (given you don't tear it open). otherwise, try a plastic bar soap box. You can probably fit 3 bars in one
I love to cook and I love to bike. Also my tree nut allergy limits my choice of energy bars. I look forward to making my own cycling snacks! Thank you!
To the last recipe you probably can add one egg into the whole mass and bake it in the oven as a cookies, that way it will be easier to wrap and carry with yourself.

I've made the flapjacks twice now, they are one of my new ride foods! They are a bit crumbly, is there something I can add to make it more solid? Maybe melted marshmallows?
Finally got round to making my own ride food. I had a go at Manon's balls and blew up the blender. To be fair the blender was just above the euro bike level. Vintage blender rolled out, no problem. Now I'm good to go.
I use weetabix, ground flax seed, pure maple syrup, PB, mashed banana, dried cranberry’s, chopped almonds, and coconut flakes. Yum! After the mashed banana can add whatever you want.
Yeah, and even if wrapped in foil or cling film, the heat from your body tends to separate the ingredients. Suppose the answer is to store them on the bike somehow...
I have eaten just high5 products, but always wanted make own. I got receip from few year ago when none other else then Simon Richardson give his own receipe and now got this three. Surely this year I try make own.
All well and good however, I'll stick with the ol' stand-by; bite-sized PBJ's. Since I have Celiac, I use Schar's Baguette rolls cut down to eight pieces per long roll. Cut them in half, add some PB and J, and I'm golden! For energy "gels", I use caffeine-infused maple syrup. PBJ's and maple syrup gels work for me.
Manon, how many calories and carbs are in the flapjacks? After making these once, I want to incorporate them into my rides. Need around 60g of carbs per hour
Manon's emergency fuel reminds me of the (germany) all famous granola bar (Müsliriegel) which I like more than the various sports bars, which either get sticky-slimy in my jersey pockets and/or are sooo chewy that breathing while eating them is almost impossible for me. I prefer the "Müsliriegel" and Fruit-bars best without chocolate in summer.
At 66 years of age, I find that comfort food doesn't work, but the food Manon eats is a bit beyond my budget. I buy grains. If Lance Armstrong new about eating raw sprouting grains, cheating wouldn't be part of his legacy, I think! Sprouting grains, nuts, seeds, coconut oil and raw honey cost me about $1000 a year if I buy in bulk. That's three 40lb pails of raw honey and one 40lb pail of coconut oil, and 50 lbs bags of assorted grains and seeds. Buckwheat is a very powerful seed. I've cycled 96 miles, spent 5 hours in the city, and returned before sunrise eating only sprouting buckwheat. After sprouting, crush ( I use a hand crank wheat grass juicer) mix with the oil. Pack it into a tin. Go. The coconut oil is a lard until it's warmed up, so I just keep the snack in a tin and use a spoon.
On 100 mile and 12 hour TTs, I used to take cheese and tomato sandwiches, a banana, and glucose tablets. What I ate had to be easy to swallow after a lot of mouth breathing.
