- The 2023 refresh of the Acer SFE16-43 is very interesting. It packs a Ryzen 7000 CPU with the impressive Radeon 780m iGPU. The specs look nice on paper but how does it perform in real life? If you enjoy the content consider dropping a like and subscribing. God bless!

It's insane how hard it was for me to find this review, no idea why RUclips didn't put it higher up in the search results considering I think you're the only one with an actual review of it out right now.
Do you have any more info on the cooling or fan noise? I've got the previous model and it throttles when you've got it in the turbo mode, did you have a chance to test that?
It's actually the main reason I wanted to purchase it, since nobody else had a review. I didn't test it in Turbo but the fans did get audible when pushing it and it also throttled a decent bit when putting it through the more difficult benchmarks.
I think having the two small fans helps it keep cool but they produce a more audible noise. It never got excessively loud or hot but those small fans run alot faster to keep that temp down.
Question for you, is the trackpad really loose feeling on the previous model?
@@CrashWilcox Man that's annoying, those little fans make such an annoying buzzing sound. I wasn't really sure what you meant by "loose", like does it wiggle side to side? No it doesn't feel that way to me on the older model.

This looks great except that it looks like the 32GB model isn't available in the US from what i'm hearing. This is a shame because 16GB with integrated graphics taking up 4GB as VRAM isn't going to cut it.

Weird that the 32GB model is not offered in the US. In Finland the 16GB model is 1500€, and 32GB model is 1700€, both including 24% VAT, so 1210€ & 1370€ excluding VAT. At least for business use, the 32GB is no-brainer and allows stuf like virtualization.
@@wallyllaw Yeah, it's frustrating for sure. Also, I believe that wifi 7 might only be available in the 32gb model. I still think it's a nice laptop and virtualization could be a great use for it.

Trackpad for my device - the right side lower portion of my trackpad rattles and feels quite iffy. Besides that little nitpick though, this is such a fantastic device. I'm going to reduce it from 3K to QHD and see if it positively affects my battery life. So far very happy with this laptop.
That is a smart decision. I think going 3K OLED looks good on paper but does more harm than good. Sorry to hear about the trackpad but like you said, it's nitpicky. Overall, it's a very nice laptop.
Main thing I didnt like, the USB4 ports don't have video out so you cant run it off a dock.
Oh yeah, that's frustrating.

Depending on how much RAM you can give to the GPU makes the difference. If you need and can give 8GB for the GPU, then 8GB is NOT enough for system. It's pushing to the limit very quickly.

Interesting I was just watching a review of the (presumably) 2022 version with 6800u with single fan inside, I guess the 7840u generates more heat so needs two fans. Great review.
Are the drivers for 7840u out yet? i know they recalled the first set that came out

First review video ive seen on this machine...cant upgrade ram, and awful top and bottom bezels, bezels i could live with but only 16GB...thats a dealbreaker for me...not prepared to risk it.
Yeah, its a shame really. even if they went with the single RAM upgrade slot, but nope!

Do you get a high pitched sound when the fans run? Just got mine and I hear it. My touchpad isnt rattling at all though
It was higher than others but I didn't think it was too bad. Definitely noticeable but those two small fans seem to be higher pitch.

OK, I had to try myself. I have this laptop (super happy by the way) with the 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD configuration. Today, I opened it and installed a second SSD. It works perfectly. I used a PCIe Gen4 Crucial P3 Plus SSD. Cheapest 4TB I could find. It works great. Just tested it by copying 2TB of files from my external Samsung T7. Very smooth, 55 min total copy time.
Great review. This feels like a $999 product in truth. $1299 is a weird target and is basically the fake price used to base "discounts" on. If there was a 1200P/120HZ/OLED panel that could have knocked the price down even more, this would be a interesting budget gaming device. I'm glad you treated gaming so seriously in this review. The 7840u is being used in gaming handhelds like the GPD WinMax and Ayaneo. The ROG Ally is using a very similar CPU as well. A fun comparison is the ROG Flow X13 which is down to $849 on Best Buy. In that case you get a 3050ti for free and have 680M graphics to use for max battery life.

This is the only I5 model that I can find. If you have a link to the 13500H model I'll take a look. As for this model, the price is good but I just think you could get better for around the same price. If it's a thin and light that you want for on the go, the OLED screen is a real limitation. If it's a something for content creation, the specs will not be powerful enough to be worth it. The same goes for gaming, it just won't be capable. Depending on why you want it, it could be nice to just use around the house, lounging on the coach surfing the web but other than that, i would recommend looking elsewhere. If you want some recommendation let me know and I will try and offer some suggestions.
pretty cool laptop, unfortunely its limitation ram size, but I think it is possible to replace solidered ram to 32GB

Just wondering, how would 4K video editing on Davinci Resolve feel like? I know for 4K you'd need supposedly at minimum 16GB and this is less since the GPU is sharing the RAM but I've seen someone use a 4800U to edit 4K (without proxies) on Davinci with only 8GB RAM as well as the iGPU further reducing the RAM available.
I'm by no means a professional, but I may create a short 4K video once a week.
I'm glad you were able to find the review and thanks for your question. As I mentioned in the video, I edited this entire video on this laptop. Recorded in 4K and rendered out at 1080p. It handled it well enough. I certainly wouldn't want it to be my full time content creation machine but if you need it in a pinch or to work on smaller projects, I think it will manage.
@@CrashWilcox Thanks for the review. How was the 4k playback while you were editing? Did it drop many frames?
@@TKSung It was fine. I used Resolve and optimize the media clips and use a reduced resolution timeline so it was not bad. Might have been a few dropped frames but nothing terrible.
If you are doing simple 4K projects and not that long, this will do the job.

As for the I7 I would say something like the 17-1360p like in the yoga 9i. It runs at the same 28W base power as the 7840u. Graphics won't be as good but should still. Perform well.

You said it has an accurate finger print reader at around the 12:25 mark but I can’t see any literature saying it has a fingerprint reader. Is this correct?

I do believe it's correct and this article on Acer speaks to it as well. I no longer have the laptop so I'm just going off memory. Hope this helps.

Thank you for this review, just ordered - I foresee 16GB being its Achilles heel a couple years down the line :( I usually keep my laptops for a while - coming from a 2015 Dell XPS 13 with 8 GB of RAM that's soo slow now. But maybe I'll switch to a newer laptop earlier this time or maybe it'll be not that bad

Had to scroll down for a while for this review. Seems the only place that's offering the laptop is BestBuy and the price already dropped to $1099 from all the bad reviews. Wish I could just drive down to the US right now as Best Buy Canada doesn't have it yet. I don't mind 16GB, it's just enough for me.
That is a great price for this laptop. It has limitations but it also has alot to offer. I hope Canada gets it soon.
It's not because of the bad reviews lol. It is a combination of the Black Friday in July (Best Buy's Prime Day) and the fact that you should never buy a laptop from Best Buy at the first price. If you don't see at least $200 off a Best Buy price, do not buy it yet. Case in point, the ROG Strix 18 is $400 off for $2099. That tells me it will be $1999 on Black Friday/Cyber Monday. I'm not saying that laptop is comparable, just pointing out Best Buy's pricing strategy. This Acer will probably be $999 for Black Friday. At least in the US.

The difference between "heave work" and "average work" is not that significant, because the most power consuming part of a laptop is the screen.
So base on your test result 4+ hours on heave work, I'd say the battery life is 5+ hours average.
The 8+ hours battery life is more like theoretical value
That's probably pretty accurate. Oddly, the beautiful OLED screen is really the weakness of this laptop. A bright, color accurate FHD screen would have been a better fit imo.
54wh battery, 16 GB embedded memory (can't be upgraded nor even replaced) is not a good news considering the igpu uses, idk 4GB, 6GB?
