Episode 3 wasn’t sad, per se, it was more bitter sweet. In the end they lived a full life together and went out on their own terms. Sam was only 8, still so young, and Henry also had his whole life ahead of him and he had hope. Joel had just finished inviting them to travel together after Henry sacrificed everything to save Sam. It was bleak.
Honestly I would say it was sad. The dudes died. But I get what you mean. This show has feels all over the place. We grieve together.
29:43 Joel is perfectly capable of defending Ellie, it's just his own PTSD that is making him think he's not capable anymore. Notice how everything he said to Tommy wasn't consistent with the reality of the situation; he said he was too slow and deaf to hear the guy with the gun coming, but the guy burst through a door that was directly behind him. how could joel have known he was coming? Joel mentioned that he stood there when Sam was on top of Ellie, but actually he was about to stop it and Henry fired a gun at him. Joel mentioned that he stood there while the dog was going to rip Ellie apart but they were surrounded by guns what was he supposed to do? Contrast that to the first FEDRA guy who had a gun on them, the odds were more even and he absolutely destroyed that guy. Joel is just really hard on himself. he only got injured in this situation because the bat broke and they ended up grappling, it has nothing to do with how capable Joel is. He clearly won the fight with a much younger dude.
Also he managed to stay calm and hit his shots even though Ellie would have died if he missed

Nathan, dogs are wild with what they can learn. There’s the standard guide dogs for the blind, but there are other types of service dogs. Like, there’s some who can tell when someone is about to have a seizure or their blood sugar gets too low. Some dogs are trained to be able to tell if bedbugs are present in a home.
I swear there is always something sad in each episode! Especially Ellie and her lack of knowledge about life before the zombies
When Joel said “I should’ve been gone 30 minutes ago” I took it as he was being sarcastic or tongue in cheek. Like, I assumed he knew Tommy was coming to the horses and wanted to confront them and give Ellie the choice that’s all. He felt bad about him saying “I’m not your daughter” and acting super cold towards her when she was hurting because she thought she was being abandoned. Then he woke up and changed his mind/realized he acting harshly towards her. I’m pretty sure at least.I could be wrong though, just how I interpreted it
It’s important for Ellie to get to the Fireflies because she’s the potential cure. It’s a mission for the good of humanity, so she couldn’t stay in safety at the community.

Dogs can smell out cancer and they can tell if someone is going to have a seizure and if trained properly can alert someone for help, although some do it on pure instinct. Dogs are awesome! Kitties are great too. We just lost our cat of 17 years this past November. Maria saying, "Tommy was just following Joel," was bullshit! He was a grown military man and knew what it meant to kill people. He made choices too.

Maria is actually one of the very few people who gets told about Ellie's secret and she doesn't tell anyone else about it ever.

My thing is, why didn't tommy just go with them. He'd lighten Joels load physically and Ellie would be fine since Joel didn't abandon her, why not go with them and offer extra protection.
Also when joel and tommy are saying goodbye tommys says 'theres a place here for both of you' joel replys 'coutin on it' Joel was always intending on staying there

Joel was stealing the horse because he is being anti-social and he feels like he can't stay in the town because he'll just "fall in love" and become vulnerable again. That is like his biggest fear. To love again so that he can get hurt again, like with Sarah.
Even if Joel could make it five days, the community would be pissed because Ellie may accidentally lead the raiders there and put them in jeopardy.
