Here’s a pro-tip from someone from Wyoming. If you’re driving through Wyoming to go to Mount Rushmore anyway, why not take a little extra time and drive on up to Devil’s Tower in Wyoming. It’s an incredible thing to see, but not something you would typically plan a whole trip to visit. Many of you may remember the movie, Close Encounters. It was filmed at Devil’s Tower. While it may be in the middle of nowhere, it’s truly a natural wonder.
Absolutely Sonja, and the Bighorn National Forest is also a must-visit, absolutely breathtaking and my favorite part of my trip to Devil's Tower and Mt. Rushmore
We used to go every Sunday after church and it DIDN'T cost anything more or less how ungodly the fees were when we returned on vacation. Never doing it again! Way to soak the tourists! 🤬
Don't go to Rushmore during the first two weeks of August, unless you don't mind multiple thousands of extra people from the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Do drive the Needles Hwy (87) and Iron Mtn Road loop (16A through Custer State Park) if you want some amazing drive/wildlife-views after leaving Rushmore. My absolute favorite area of the USA.
We actually did go during Sturgis, that is why we were in the area, the crowds were not horrible, this was 8 years ago, fantastic time beautiful area to ride.
Hasn't been same experience for me over past 7+ years. Larger crowds at every site in the Black Hills area during Rally days vs other times of year, with possible exception of Independence Day holiday. Not a criticism, just a personal observation.
@Nicolas Crump -I agree! I don't think many people think of South Dakota when they want to take a vacation but I found it to be one of my favorite places to visit. I can't wait to go back.
Went there for a wedding in 2016..didnt think this Chicago girl would enjoy South Dakota so much.. Definitely going back...South Dakota was a lesson in staying open minded and stepping out of your comfort zone... Mt. Rushmore and the badlands were truly beautiful...
You left out so many interesting places in the area: Sylvan Lake, the Needles, Wind Cave National Park, Custer State Park with the wild bison, Evans Plunge in Hot Springs, Hill City, Bear Country, Reptile Gardens and so much more!
the mammoth site at hot springs, the SDSMT geology museum, the depression era dinosaur park, wind cave, jewel cave, storybook island which is great for kids....
We have been there several times. Just love the entire area. If you get a chance take the helicopter tour. We go there in September. No crowds and super low room rates.
We were there over the summer (my second time -- my first was in 1983!). Had to try the ice cream, and it is a very rich, very special vanilla. So good! Don't think that it's just a boring old vanilla! Also, the museum on site is great and very informative if/when open!
I don't know if there's a word for it, but there's this overwhelming emotion I get when there's something I've seen a million times in movies and television and suddenly I see it in real life. It honestly nearly brings me to tears. I first felt it when I was in a car driving into Washington DC and spotted the Capitol dome for the first time. I've since experienced it in Paris, both with Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower, on the one non-cloudy day when I was in Japan and could see Mt. Fuji, and yes, driving around the bend when you can first spot Mount Rushmore.
Nearby is Rush Mountain, a small roller coaster park with a few other amusement park type rides. In Keystone city there, in addition to hotels, are a number of attractions and you can see the profile of Lincoln.
Excellent video! I'm going to save this video when I go out to Mount Rushmore. I've never been out there, so this video will help when I plan a trip to go out there. That ice cream looked delicious. Also, I love the tips about visiting other places near Mount Rushmore. The famous landmark would make not think of visiting other place, but I'll be sure to visit other place such as the Badlands! What was the best time of day to see Mount Rushmore? Why? Thank you!
From a South Dakotan: another great attraction in the area is Custer State Park. Lots of scenic drives and hikes. Also, the lake from the end of National Treasure 2 is NOT directly behind Mt Rushmore. That is Sylvan Lake and it can be found in.....Custer State Park! Definitely take the walking trails at Mt Rushmore. Especially if you’re into photography. You can get really col close-up shots of the faces from directly below. Hard Agree on Thomas Jefferson’s ice cream! It’s awesome!!
Love your state been there many times just there again in September Been Sturgis different times From Wis wyoming another great state people in south Dakota very friendly probably b back in June
Here's my tip for someone looking forward to Mt Rushmore. Don't expect much. Sorry to say. Movies like National Treasure made it looked all super big and epic and all... but dont expect it to be that epic like in the movies. If you're a gift shopper, make sure you carry a lot of disposable cash. They have a lot of cool stuff in there! But it is pricey. Be nice and courteous. You're not the only one from out of state there, There's hundreds of people there at any given time. There's also a drive through zoo nearby as well. Make sure to check that out! I also really liked the icecream they offered over at the cafeteria! Lol.
Thanks for all the recent videos. We are planning to see the US when we retire soon( hopefully post Covid).Great info as always!Stay safe and keep up the great travels.

Hey Mark, As I was watching this video for the second time (showing Colleen) I had noticed that at .22 you said "heads up" and also at 1.53 you said "heads up" again whenever the mountain was behind you. Now that's funny stuff right there. :) :).

You mentioned the Badlands, which is definitely not to be missed, but you should also visit Custer State Park. They have a herd of bison who were just hanging out right on the road when we drove through.
Most of the Bison are currently in the corrals. The park does a big roundup every fall where they bring the herd together for vaccinations and a percentage are sold at auction.
