Burning off the Pasture, Getting it ready for seed.

- I decided to burn off an area of the pasture. This area has never been mowed. It has very tall dead grass laid over. Burning it off should help the grass grow back. How long will it take for the grass to come back. I was very surprised on how fast it recovered. The pasture turned back green very quickly. Now we plan on planting grass and clover seed to re-seed the pasture.

Nice burn. The dirt in your yard from the basement isn't necessarily missing nutrients so much as it is missing organic matter and the microbes that make for good soil. Do a soil test on it and fertilize and add amendments to get the pH right. top dressing the entire bare area with some kind of mulch for a year or two can really get it going in the right direction; whether that be tree mulch or just unrolling hay over it a few inches deep each year until it starts growing things well. I have seen a few people go to a farmer with rotten round bales and use those a few times and it does work but can make you soil acidic (I think it was). you can also buy things like peat moss, sand and/or mulched leaf litter and till that into the ground to alleviate some of the troubles of what looks to be clay soil and give water a place to soak into instead of making slick mud that it runs off of. use a search engine and you can find this stuff fairly easy and get you headed in the right direction.
Good ideas. It almost looks as if they stripped all the top soil and didn't put it back. We have builders here in the Northeast do that, strip a ft of top soil and only put back 2-3'' back. Really grinds my gears !
I second doing a top dressing rather than putting more seed down.
I burn off about 2.5 acres of meadow we have every other spring or so does wonders for the grass and keeps weeds down. Got a drip torch this year makes it so much easier.
Saludos, mi amigo disculpa si no estoy de acuerdo con usted, esa maleza que anteriormente cortaste con la cuchilla del tractor, podías fabricar como un rastrillo para ser jalado por el tractor y incorporarla a la composta, se que la costumbre para todos los agricultores es desaserce de la la maleza es cortarla esperar que seque y prenderle candela, pero difiero en esto, que para extensiones no tan grandes es mayor el beneficio atravez de la composta que la quema.

i am proud to see you burn against the wind. it is slower but burns much more thorough. i have seen people burn with the wind and basically achieve nothing. i really enjoy your videos and hope they keep coming.......g
Glad to see the grass is starting to come back nicely :) Something to keep in mind: Don't forget though, you have animals now, if you can't (or don't want to) deal with other areas like that on your property due to wind or proximity to buildings, you can always just use your goats and chickens. Al from Lumnah Acres has his laying and meat chickens on their grass, and within a couple weeks it's always growing back greener. He said that they got their property in an action (or it was foreclosed, can't remember), and all of the great grass they have now that they use for their pasture was really overgrown and the chickens eating it / stomping it down combined with their dropping brought that grass back to life. And goats are Great for clearing brambles and bushy / overgrown areas, ect (as long as you make sure that there are no plants in the area you're going to have them clear that are harmful to them) :))
We need to burn a few sections of our pasture, but it's been super windy. Don't want it to get out of hand! LOL! We burned around our pond last year & it grew back super fast & was very lush!
Mixed reviews on pasture burning....while it does make K available quickly, the same availability occurs (albeit at a slower pace) if grass is mowed and left to break down naturally. The negative impact of burning is that you lose all that wonderful organic matter which protects the soil surface while "green-manuring" your pasture. Don't burn too often...I'd say about once per decade would be about right...
If you have a issue try using a petrol blower that helps the fire go the way you want i do it all the time

Burning your pasture is an excellent idea, especially if it is warm season grass. I burned a bit earlier and will burning again when it dries out a bit more. Not burning is why we have so many invasive species taking over. Spring is OK for overseeding, but fall is always the best. I do both myself.
Try adding some gypsum in the areas that contain construction soil. It breaks up clay.
Get a big spring rake that attaches to the tractor and go over the future pasture area before seeding this will break the top crust giving seeds a better chance to take hold 🏴🏴
So, are you saying “Burn baby burn “. Grass normally sprouts quickly after burning. Better fertilizer from the burning?

Why put up with land that is difficult to utilize? Find a good excavation company or even a large landscaping company, They can cut down the high spots to build up the low spots and rework the drainage so that area doesn’t hold water. Two good operators can knock it out in a day and half maybe two.
A sign out at the end of the driveway saying clean fill wanted works sometimes, depending where ya live ? Fill that hole right up with a pipe going through or do what you said.

Worked 25 days with one day off. Wow that's burn out pace. What do you do for a living ?
Actually, that was part way through, I ended up working 32 days with 2 days off. I work electrical maintenance and we had a shutdown we were working. Glad it's over, don't have to do again for a year.
During a shutdown, if we are working 7 days a week, I get a day off every 14 days. I work in equipment maintenance and we have shutdowns every year or so, where we do major maintenance. Basically we take everything apart and put it back together.
You might look up Cedar Rust on your apple trees and take out those Cedars!!!! Its just a pain in the butt to clean them out here!! LOL

I read a article about after Mount St. Hellens exploded the hippies went in an planted an area and the forest service left their area alone and the area that was left along came back faster and better because nature knows what it is doing.
If that grass gets any higher you may be wasting seed planting it this year.
