I live out in Deep Gap, I haven’t been able to make it toward Todd and Meat camp quite yet, only gotten to meat camp creek from Roby greene. I have been staying away from the area so I don’t create extra traffic in the area. Some of my friends live out there and were talking about how bad the damage was. My heart is broken to see rail road grade road destroyed. I plan to come out and try helping pick up trash along the river now that I finally have power and water again myself. Thanks for recording this historic footage!
Such a beautiful place. Those fallen trees can be removed, the bridge needs to be rebuilt. The other bridge should be checked for integrity. Be careful, assume nothing. Thanks for the walk about. Stay safe.
Looks like it might take some time to get back to normal. I went to school in Boone in 1982…beautiful country. Enjoy the bike videos. I dont think I could handle the climbs like you do. I live at the coast now and ride almost daily when Im off work…but no hills! Take care.
Love the mountains and love the coast! Riding at the coast can be surprisingly tough as you are aware. It's flat, so non-stop pedaling and usually deal with the wind which can be like climbing. Thanks for watching - glad you like the bike videos
I wanted to go up there to Long Hope several years ago, where there's some good hiking along Long Hope bald ridge up to Long Hope Mountain at its north end, and then to the east of Long Hope bald ridge there's another nice bald peak, Old Field Bald. But there was a locked gate at the main access road, Petty Drive, leading up there from the south. So I wasn't able to get up there to do the hike. In your video I see that that gate is now open, but the road is gone, washed away, destroyed by Hurricane Helene. Apparently there are other, longer access routes on foot to get up there to Long Hope bald ridge and Old Field Bald -- from the west, from Elk Knob State Park; or from the north, starting from the top of Big Branch. But I ran out of time. Hope to get up there on another trip to WNC in the future. Beautiful mountains. What's the name of that lodge? Once it's back up and running, and the road is rebuilt, if I stay there at that lodge, since it seems that's up Petty Drive, I assume I'd have access to be able to hike Long Hope bald ridge and Old Field Bald.
I have tried writing letters to our North Carolina senator Tom Tillis and our congresswoman Virginia Fox and all I get is a letter of what is going on that you would give to TV or the media. We are citizens of North Carolina and we should have our Congress and senators give us special responses and I believe if we all get together and vote them out of office when they come up. And put someone in because we are going to need help for many years for this area and if we don't have the proper people in to get it we won't get it and I'm talking about Republicans we've got to get them on board.
This nice area but clean and repair heavy equipment will have restriction due bridge not build for this.this is long haul.Calgary alberta got flood 2013 small town area have rebuild better bridge due heavy equipment.thanks video.😮
Given all the stuff that happened in the state this really isn't too bad. They drained the pond a little before the storm in hopes that the dam wouldn't bust so they can refill it fairly easy. That is the level it was drained to before the storm. Still don't understand how the level rose above the dam and poured over the road - the spillway should have stopped that from happening. Sounds like you are familiar with the area. Worst part is probably the road up to that lodge - it's gone - just can't get to it. But no structures damaged and a lot of trees down.

The blue house had been through a flood before. It was on stilts and not ruined.
