    Great video. I picked up Bw when it was on sale because I knew it was great. Been watching it from afar since it came out but never committed to it until now. Finally started producting stuff in and I must say I really love the experience. I still use other daws like Studio ONE (esp when I produce for singer/songwriters) but I kinda switch to Bw from Ableton because I only had the Lite version and an old version 6 with my MPC40. I feel like bitwig is more aggressively innovative than Ableton. I just prefer the Bw workflow.
    Glad you told me about MPE, I'm in the market for a keyboard controller.

      Kewl. It's been a while since I fiddled Ableton. In some DAWs clips are "linked instances" and in some they are unique. Often you can choose to make an instance unique too (like in FL Studio). Fun stuff! Everything is awesome! Thanks for writing.

      Hi Dub. Yes,but Bitwig was built from scratch with all the Ableton features in mind so it got to redo and refine and make it even more impressive, especially with the modulators. Grid system. Ableton may have a mileslong headstart but Bitwig can make it right from the start. Though I think both DAWs have strong features to offer. Let's talk new synths instead. 😋🌞

      In Bitwig you add effects per track. If you want to process a separate clip with say reverb, eq etc. Just bounce thr clip with effects. 🥳🎂, Bitwig has other super strengths too, like the flexible routing AND modulators. If you need to HARD code an effect into an audio clip just bounce the clip with effects. Simple as that.

    I've been a FL only user for more than 11 years. A couple of years ago I tried learning ableton, but i just never really got hooked on it. I have recently installed bitwig, and I never thought i'd ever like another daw more than FL. But damn, bitwig rocks! It took just a couple of days for me to feel comfortable in it.
    The only reason why I decided to try it, was because I heard it basically has flawless plugin delay compensation, and so far that has been the case too! I'm glad I tried it, because its right up my alley with all modulation options and other features i'm too tired to think of right now.

      Yeah Timmy, Bitwig is really superior when it comes to workflow and the convenient modulators which can basically do anything you ever dreamed of. Only thing FL is superior in, is it's piano roll and midi editing. But that's no biggie compared to the wins with quick modulators AND super easy automation workflow. In FL Studio it can get pretty ugly pretty fast when yoou have automation clips all over the place...what belongs to what!? ;)

    I agree with all this! I'd add:
    1). Bitwig has by far the best multi-touch interface for Windows. Other DAWS only allow a sort of single-finger-as-mouse default. In Bitwig I can play polyphonically on the on-screen keyboards, and can mix multiple tracks at a time, and so on. And the touch gestures are brilliantly rethought, not just treating your finger as a mouse -- very useful and intuitive and inventive.
    2). Having session view and arrangement view at the same time is fantastic. (Not, like Abbleton Live, having to switch between them and only using one or the other at a time.)
    3). Very solid/stable. It doesn't crash (sometimes plug-ins do, but they are sand-boxed and you just reload and continue).

    Great video matt, but there's some things I might want to point out, just clear some things out :P.
    (tips for fl studio)
    -if you want to make a fade in or fade out double clicking on the sample will open the sampler, from there you can adjust the in and out or select a fade from the left side of the sampler.
    -if you want to reverse or edit a sample, just right click on the top left of the sample and click on *make unique* which will make the certain sample you want to edit unique, (remember to duplicate the sample before you do this,) and then you can edit that sample without it affecting the original sample (to reverse, just double click the sample which opens the sampler and click on the reverse button)
    -to make adjustments to the sample per say make it shorter or move it back or forward just press shit+s to choose the slip tool and you can make the adjustments & to make these adjustments more precise, you can click on alt while dragging the audio file.
    other than that, super dope video, learnt alot from it, was kinda confused how the automations worked, but now I know how it works! thanks for the valuable info!

  • @Artek604
    @Artek604 5 лет назад +6

    About reversing clips, the fact that in FL (and apparently Logic) other clips are also affected is because those DAWs have functionality of alias/linked clips, so a user-defined group of clips that all share changes to one of them. it's a super powerful thing and very useful, but missing in Bitwig. In FL at least, if you want to isolate the clip you simple select "make unique" and changes to it doesn't affect any other clips. I'm sure Logic also has something like it.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 лет назад +1

      Hey Artur! How are you? Yeah I know about the ”make unique” feature of FL Studio. I use FL too. ;) But it makes it very fast to work in Bitwig. Logic has a similar feature too. But I lift this as one of my top ”likes” because it makes up for a very fast workflow in Bitqig as you don’t have to think about this when you just want to drag out samples, reverse, trim, quick fade etc. To me that’s a faster workflow. ;)
      Good to see you around!

    • @Artek604
      @Artek604 5 лет назад +2

      @@MattiasHolmgren I'm not using either, but I believe you can set up FL to not link the clips by default, so then it'd work like Bitwig in this respect. And at least FL gives you a choice and Bitwig doesn't. If I have a drum loop I'm using in 30 places in my song, in Bitwig I need to track down every instance and modify separately; in FL I'd only change in one place.
      Btw, I'm not saying FL is better, because I gave it a chance 3-4 times but I just couldn't get along with it. But it definitely has some aspects Bitwig would benefit from copying (and vice versa).

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 лет назад +1

      Hehe, personally I've never found this "non-linked clips" as a flaw. To me it's more of a feature in Bitwig, as I can work very fast rather than need to think about if an adjustment will affect my other clips. Just drag out samples, chop them up, reverse, repitch them as you like... copy, repitch, stretch, reverse, refit....awesome beats! It really depends on the user. As with everything. =)
      Cool, didn't know you can find an option / setting to turn that off in FL.
      FL is a really nice DAW too, but this non-linked clips "feature" and quick fades, reverse etc really sold me on working in Bitwig for these kind of edits. And I don't have to worry about a Channel Rack / track list of 1000 channels / clips just because some of them are unique. ;) Yeah I know you can sort them etc. but....you know what I mean.
      Yes, Bitwig could benefit including the choice to link clips. But I would highly recommend that they do not have it active by default.

    Oh, there's still snow in your place!) So nice to see you outside on the sunny nature, Mattias! And thanks a lot for this overall video on Bitwig! Always very exciting and interesting topic for me)
    I think, I totally agree with all your points. I actually started watching Bitwig, I think, even before their first release back in the days, as they announced it on NAMM or what it was. I was very attracted, that they announced Linux support officially and right from the start, it was so brave decision! I should say, I raised the point of Linux support in other DAWs I worked, Cubase, Ableton, used to wrote to Native Instruments concerning their plugins, signed petitions etc., but the result was always either ignorance or "there's no need, because there's no such market". And Bitwig guys just told what I wanted to hear.
    Having said that, it still looked unreal for me to switch to Linux, as DAW is one part of the picture, but we always work with plugins, and there's almost nothing of them on Linux (and now there's a few, thanks to equally brave guys like u-he :)). But through the following years things slowly changed, I always returned to this thought and about a year ago I just realized, that this switch is quite real. And I should try.
    So for my quite unusual case the selling factors in Bitwig were surely native Linux support, quite quality built-in instruments, powerful routing and modulation system and some similarity of the interface to Ableton Live, where I used to work recent years and found it very effective in terms of workflow for me. Now after a year of working on Bitwig on Linux (ok, ok, the first half of it I tried to write my own VST wrapper, so just a half of the year in fact :)) I never regret it. Now I'm on quite far stages of work on my first Bitwig track and I never regret of the switch. It's always quite biased, but I think, I'm even more productive, than I was on Ableton Live, not saying about perpetual boots, reboots, upgrades and failures. I mostly use only built-in instruments, usually it takes time to get proper sound and in some rare cases I even can't get it at all, just something different, but it's highly possible. And still it's a great experience in sound design. I should say, I'm satisfied with Bitwig overall and happy to work in it.
    As always, there're drawbacks, which one notices working with the program every day. Most of them are minor GUI or usability issues or just something not very well implemented, but sadly so less of them are getting fixed. I still hope a lot will be done in terms of user experience in version 3, but given it's already quite feature-rich and major, we might face roughly the same untouched GUI for the rest of the program. Anyway, hopefully, everything would be fixed sometime)
    So yes, to sum up, I think, Bitwig is wonderful, mature and feature-rich DAW with great potential. As DAW is very complex program, I don't hesitate, that in terms of features the user can do all the things in all the DAWs one way or another. But, I think, luckily, that Bitwig team have found their place or niche and is on straight course. There's a lot of work ahead, but yes, it's very promising)
    Thank you very much again, Mattias, for raising this interesting topic! I'm so glad for you, that you as a musician is able to work in multiple DAWs comparable amount of time, having some general look of current state of this area. It's nice, that we have proper instrument for certain tasks and for each personal taste, so yes, will look, how it would evolve :) Have a nice and productive week! And, as always, thank you very much for your suggestions and inspiration!

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your backlog and history on Bitwig. Always good to hear how people got involved with the DAW and opened their eyes to it. Indeed there are flaws for certain tasks, but I find flaws in all the DAWs that's why I go with a power trio of Bitwig, Logic Pro X and FL Studio. =)
      Linux is sure gaining some ground at last. I'm glad for that and I will probably do a little build myself soon when time is given. It's been a long time since I experimented with such OS. I remember fiddling with some Ubunto installation ages ago. But it was plenty of customisation to do simple tasks, like web servers etc. And there wasn't any audio apps at that time. As you mentioned, now we have some really cool apps like Bitwig and u-he plugins running. Great times and bright future!
      I hope more devs jump on the train of evolution.

    Maybe your information is a bit dated. You got a few things wrong about Logic. 1) You can fade without changing the tool 2) Reversing a copy of the sample won't reverse all of them. Most of the things in this video is as easy in other DAWS. Some you have to turn on in the settings.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 года назад

      Hi Mariella, oh yes, of course you can fade without a tool. It's just an additional device to give you extra control without effecting the automation. I know how they all work, I use Logic since it's birth. ;) It's in FL Studio that reversing one sample will reverse them all. You have to make unique copies to make them un-linked. Some users prefer this linked behaviour.
      I use Logic, Bitwig, Studio One and FL Studio professionally on a daily basis so I definitely know what I'm talking about here.
      If you see my other videos, you know what I mean.
      Bitwig has the smoothest interface and workflow of them all...according to my experience. Taste is different obviously. ;)
      No other DAW offer the same flexibility in quick modulation and routing as Bitwig. But
      Bitwig lacks some more deep midi / audio editing tools still.
      Logic Pro X is really good for filmscoring and media composition. I use it all the time for scoring films and games.

    2 reasons why my favorite daw [ Fl Studio ] is a bit flawed:
    - Automation can get cluttered fast and I find myself trying not to automate things at times because it starts to fill up the screen
    - Audio manipulation. I didn't know how much it was lacking until I used Ableton
    But hey those aren't too bad it's still amazing for an endless amount of other reasons.
    Though it's really cool to see how Bitwig has implemented these things so thanks for the pretty objective look at the DAW. I may have to check it out!

      Hi, yeah I try to be as objective as I can because I also love FL Studio and Logic Pro x. They are all good for various reasons. I’ve been using all other major DAWs so I guess I at least have some sense of knowledge to compare Bitwig against the competition.
      Bitwig Studio has done track mixer routing (grouping), and automation and parameter access VERY convenient. The Sampler is really powerful with granular modes, and the Grid in 3.0 is just another great leap for this modern DAW.
      In FL I really like the color scheme and UI, plugin suite, fast boot, Patcher and the music video plug ZGameEditor Visualizer.
      Logic for orchestral scoring, score editor and excellent video support, plugin suite and Flex Time for editing vocal lines.

Annoying! Its also deletes your previous take even if you dont enter any data. Cubase doesn't delete data until your play something over it. Lets say you make a good take in loop rec mode, if you dont punch out exactly at 00:00 your data is gone. Punching out perfectly in loop record when your in the zone is a pain and hard to do. Yes you can set auto punch but when being creative and loop recording until you find a good part Bitwig will piss you off. Try and you will see what im saying.

The basic looking UI is because it uses the libraries that comes with you OS but it's also the reason the DAW is like 15MB and it opens up lightening fast and it takes almost no CPU while running the same plugins compared to other DAWs. But for me Bitwig is the most natural and fluid and flexible environment. The clincher for me is that Bitwig is actually making use of Windows multi-touch -- it's very frustrating to have multi-touch hardware and use software that doesn't take advantage of it, which is all too common.

    I'm genuinely interested, not trying to start a flame war: Doesn't reaper provide all of these features? Some of them you'd have to adjust preferences/toolbars, but you could end up with pretty much the exact same workflow. Although I suppose preferred DAW may be more about how it's set up by default, since it can be a pain to customize it to your workflow.
    Also, reaper definitely works with 32/64 bit plugins simultaneously, MPE, and cross-platform. Granted, the Linux version is still experimental, but it seems to be working quite well.

    • @Artek604
      @Artek604 5 лет назад +7

      True, Reaper is probably the most flexible and customisable DAW out there. But that's also its weakness - there lots of menus, options and settings and it looks like s**t no matter the skin. Bitwig is very focused, showing only the relevant options and excels in easy and fast workflow, trading off the depth and flexibility a bit.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 лет назад +5

      This video is about my personal opinions and preferences when it comes to selecting DAW. Indeed Reaper is highly customisable, I've been using it from time to time in the past. Even recorded a metal EP in it in the past if I remember correctly. But the UI never appealed to me, it's too sterile and was never inspiring. These days it may offer MPE and 32/64 bit, sorry I missed it. But it's not even on my list of recommended DAWs due to the uninspiring interface and too fiddly customisation. Too many options will also scare away a new user. It comes at a prize.
      But I think both Omnisphere and Bitwig (to name a few) has embraced this new design concept where we can have limited functionality at first level, and then we can zoom in and get more functionality if we need to. Rather than having too much menus and options visible. I really like that philosophy.
      I so much wanted to like Reaper, so I forced myself to come back to it. But I mean... I have Logic Pro X, FL and Bitwig. Reaper might be a good choice for some people, but not for me.
      Bitwig truly has embraced modern design, functionality and ease of use. It's very accessible, for new users and experienced producers.

    @isweartofuckinggod 3 года назад +3

    I've been drooling over Bitwig for a while now, but this is the first time I see something I really hate. Coming from FL Studio's Automation Clips, this feels like it would be as limiting as switching to Garageband or Magix Music Maker. What do you do if you rely on lots of complex automation with many different parameters being driven (for example like a granular neuro bass) and then need to move it or duplicate it in a different part of the song? Or, what if you have a shorter complex curve that you want to repeat in a lot of different places, but then you still want to be able to tweak it and have all of it's instances change, too? Would that just be impossible?

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  3 года назад +1

      Automation follows clips, and you can easily copy / past automation (also between different parameters). Just select a bunch of points, then select another automation line, add a point, past the points from memory, done!
      So Bitwig automation is indeed great, although you will probably work with modulators in many of your cases. ;)
      Yes, Bitwig does not work with reference clips, like in Logic / FL Studio.
      But as I said, in most scenarios you are working with modulators instead. Setup an LFO modulator to do some complex stuff in combo with another LFO etc. you can make it as complex as you want, modulators modulating modulators that modulat another modulat.... Then you can copy that same modulation to another track too if you want.
      Take a look at my modulation video which showcases many of the modulators: ruclips.net/video/mTxDMkKWqIg/видео.html
      Once you touched the modulation devices you can't let go. Enjoy Eoku! 🌞

      @@MattiasHolmgren The modulators are one of the things that got me excited to try Bitwig in the first place. I will have to relearn a lot of things if I plan to migrate to another DAW. Bitwig seems better than most DAWs in almost every way, so when I see a relatively average automation system it just stands out like a sore thumb, especially when everything else is very modular and robust. I guess I just had my expectations set a bit too high. :)

      @@MattiasHolmgren thank you for the interest 😉. Probably I'm not very clear, sorry, but the thing I'm talking about is just a standard feature of Bitwig, which me, as other few people, don't like. If you want to try, do this: create a midi track, then, using "external hardware" module, send midi notes to a hardware device (sampler, synth, anything that receives midi). Of course it works perfectly, then, just with a mouse, try to mute the track. You will find that midi data keeps to be sent to the hardware device, so, in a live scenario (or anything else) you can't do this simple task🤔

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 лет назад +1

      That sounds like a very much wanted function for external HW guys sending midi here and there... Here is a little workaround that you might try.
      1. Create a Chain Device.
      2. Put your HW Instrument inside the Chain Device.
      3. For the Chain Device add a Button modulator.
      4. Connect this Button to (modulate (switch on/off) the HW Instrument inside... Each device has a I/O button you can modulate. This should stop the HW Inst. device from sending midi data to external HW, if it's switched off.
      Might do the trick.
      Another solution is to use Clip Launcher. Then just mute clips you don't want to send data.
      Best solution would be for Bitwig Team to implement so Mute also mutes any HW instrument Device in the chains of devices in that track.
      If (track[0].devices[0].HW_instrument==true) track[0].devices[0].HW_instrument.mute();
      Recursive function of course...
      I thought all Live DJs uses Clip Launching these days...since Ableton. ;)

    Great tutorial, thanks much. I don't care very much about the "Grid" or extensive modulation, as I'd rather rely on professional designers to provide sounds for my use in the form of "presets". What I really need, and think may be here--altho not gone into very much--is "Grouping"--a tool to aid in composition arranging parts and transitions without getting tangled in the linear timeline.

      Hi Mario, thanks for watching and commenting. Yes all DAWs have pretty much the similar functionality, if you fiddle enough with tools, settings and options. To me Bitwig is very straightforward and more accessible. I’m glad you found your own favourite. To me Reaper can be fun but it’s not that appealing. I want to feel inspired by the tools I use. And Bitwig UI / UX is king compared to the competition when it comes to instant gratification. Glad to hear your point of view though. I take the other DAWs for a spin from time to time just to keep up to date. And I love tech and see how the products evolve. Thus this channel. ;) Thanks for dropping in Mario!

      Hi, good to hear your experience with Reaper. Yeah, sometimes hardware can drive you insane...or plugins with weird behaviour. Never tried Behringer interfaces thought, only tried some of their mixers which sounded extremely noisy. But hey, they were cheap. =) I still remember fiddling with PC setups back in the days of Firewire PCI cards...it was a nightmare building a solid PC (they never became totally solid) so I went to the MAC side. =) I had a Wamirack 24 back then when I was using PC. The audio interface which I still miss sometimes...The Wamirack 24 had such nice AD/DA and many ins/ outs, and quality drivers.
      But today I have this Duet (2) for MAC (which also works with the iPad) which is kinda neat.
      Had the Duet 1 for a long time too, very solid audio interfaces.
      Back to topic: For me (I'm also a designer at heart), Bitwig is much more accessible and intuitive compared to Reaper.
      I eat with my eyes too, and Reaper can be very "not so pretty" at times, a little like GIMP. And that just takes away the inspiration if you are working long hours in the app. But that's me, I totally understand it works for other producers.
      Anyways, good to hear you are satisfied with Reaper and that it lines up with your mindset. Happy composing!!!

Maybe the modulation works a bit faster in bitwig. No hate on the daw, but seems to me the same things can be accomplished within ableton plus it has video integration. which bitwig really lacks. Also within ableton you have max for live, which allows you to build your own custom modular synths within the daw. Just my two cents.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 лет назад

      Oh yes I’ve worked in Ableton quite a bit in the past. I’ve worked in all major DAWs. Ableton started it all, Bitwig was actually developed by drop-offs from Ableton dev team so it’s no surprise it looks / works similar. Yes wig still misses video support, but aside from that modulation is what makes Bitwig stands out.
      That and the much sleeker ”modern” interface compared to Ableton. Personal preferences as always. Yes Live has Max, Bitwig now has the Grid. Apples and oranges.
      For video I still work in Logic. Ableton has a nice wavetable synth and some nice saturation devices etc which sounds very good indeed. But I really feel the user interface of Ableton is bit harder to ”read” compared to Bitwig. That’s why I switched to wig. Thanks for your view! ;)

    As always it takes knowing exactly how a DAW implements it's various functions. FL Studio can quickly accomplish fades with small volume automation, and as for reversing, simply remember to make the audio clip unique. Of course you'd really have to spend time with a program to learn things like that. Appreciate your video.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 лет назад

      Yeah I have no bad thing to say about FL studio. (The only a bit tedious task is organization in FL, what is routed where etc.) I also love to work in the FL DAW. Bitwig is different and very convenient and fast to work in. Never need to think about routing or what goes where. Very straightforward with powerful routing IF one wants to do that.
      Bitwig has the epic GRID now, while FL has the Patcher. Those are cool environments for an electronic artist for making epic sounds! Thanks for writing Dougie!

      @@MattiasHolmgren Saves me replying on two different videos of yours. Grid is a great improvement for Bitwig, but it would be good to hear how Patcher and Grid compare. Fades, as mentioned above are easily done and and making samples unique is easy too (and, on the subject of sampling, whether Botwig compares well in terms of time stretching and other sample manipulation tools). . I am more curious about what you say about routing and organisation. Did you make a video specifically about how that is better in Bitwig? I'll check, but please let us know if you have a more detailed list of Bitwig's ease of use features.

      @@ccuny1 hi, all those concepts are probably hidden away in many of my videos. Thanks for mentioning this since organization is probably one key factor why I open up Bitwig as primary DAW most of the time. ;) Although I love the workflow in Logic and FL Studio too, I find myself lost sometimes in FL when I start to do routing between channels and it's hard to tell what sound belong to what pattern etc. I see renowned producers looking lost quite often in their own projects in FL. That's probably the outcome of giving the user the instant access to route any channel to any mixer track. A curse and powerful feature at the same time.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 лет назад

      @@ccuny1 yeah, I'll definitely need to do a video talking about how Patcher in FL and Grid in Bitwig Studio are different. And how they are simililar. And don't necessarily think one is better than the other. It's totally different tools if you ask me. Patcher might have the upper hand if you want to layer multiple third party synths since The Grid does not "by default" support adding third party plugins. Only native Bitwig modules. BUT you can route audio from third party plugins into the Grid, though that requires extra setup which the Patcher does not need. Grid is a modular environment with emphesis on the modulation, phase manipulation etc. which isn't really the strength of Patcher. Since Patcher only routes audio signal from one plugin to the other and you don't have extra modules to fiddle with the signal any more than amplitude. There's more to it of course but that's for the video. Thanks for the suggestion Cricri!

    But it does not offer comping except in a very round-about way via the Clip Launcher, and they the small German dev team are totally unresponsive to feature requests -- their advertised 'new approach' really missed a beat when they failed to be customer responsive.

    The only problem I actually have with this program is they need a whole lot more sounds to win over ableton users for example We need better quality stock sounds both for our VSTs and our sample library.
    We need to focus more on covering the basics and we will win all across-the-board trust me we need a variety of sounds like flutes, strings, violin, hearts, leads, plucks, brass and a lot more sounds that you would find in a plugin nexus or a serum bitwig will be the greatest of all time

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 лет назад

      Yeah you can never have enought sounds. =) The bundled sample library that comes with Bitwig is actually very good. But it can be hard to find the sounds you are looking for if you haven't yet mastered the browser and how to wrap your head around the plugins.
      The presets could use some work, but it gets better all the time. A wavetable synth like Serum would be neat, but we have Serum for that. =)
      A great sample library is always welcome, good pianos, strings, plucks etc.
      My personal biggest request is a node based editor like the FL Studio Patcher which is a wonderful environment / playground to create sounds. Hopefully Bitwig 3 - The Grid will give us something similar to work with!

Or you can activate it by zone, but requires extra option fiddling. In Bitwig you just drag at specific place on the audio clip to fade, by default no extra options needed. ;). Though, short question, can you select like 10 channels and insert an eq on all of them at once? (in bitwig) i was trying to find it but couldn't, which looks like nonsense to me, maybe you know what am I doing wrong?😂

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 лет назад

      Arion Sinagra, it’s all about wrapping your head around it. I’m out of the studio today so I might not be totally accurate in describing now, but, If I out of some reason would need to add the same EQ to a bunch of channels at the same time I would put those tracks in a group and apply processing to the group. Good thing with Bitwig is that you can group in several levels. Not just one depth.
      Or I would do the EQ setup on one channel then just copy past the same EQ to the other relevant channels. If you want a really fast workflow you have your pre-defined device chains (you can compare it to channel preset setting in say Logic). And you just load up / drag that chain device of preset effects to the relevant tracks.
      There are several ways to do things. It’s easy just to think about a mixer channel and its inserts. But with Bitwig you can split out / branch in several ways to do some really creative manipulation with plugins. Not just linear top to bottom effect chains.
      It’s a very cool way of working and when you get used to it and try those old linear channel mixer racks of other DAWs you really miss that power of Bitwig.
      I know FL has Patcher and I really love it.
      But the modulators in Bitwig gives you more visual feedback for how various LFOs etc work in conjunction since you have visual representation of the oscillstions.
      One downside here though that I feel need some work:
      In Bitwig / Ableton we have to scroll horizontally a lot. My wish is that we get a whole full window view for devices and wiring within an update. Hopefully Bitwig 3.0 with the Grid will sort this out! ;)
      Because when you start to wire devices and split out / branch audio in various ways it can get hard to troubleshoot.
      At least I feel it would be appropriate to get a full window view when you are designing one track device chains and are focused on that specific task.
      Good times, plenty of new cool ways of working.

      @@MattiasHolmgren I was also considering to switch from lpx, btw, sure grouping and stuff, and if needed I can do several layers with bussing no problem, though thing I was asking is if you know, in logic (studio one, protools, cubase whatever) you just select multiple channels in mixer, select a plug in and it adds this plug in to all selected (same for sends for example, like different bus sends by groups) if I'm mixing 30 audio tracks, I'm pretty sure I need eq on each of them (even if not used just to have spectrum) if it's not electronic then gates almost on every channel, so it just saves time...
      Also, how about having a channel creation menu? Like when routing channels to console I can just make 24 tracks and route them all in descending order

    Hello Mattias, happy Christmas 2020. I am about to buy some more software including Dune 3 but with limited money I was wanting to buy a version of BITWIG but is the 16 track version of Bitwig formidable as a DAW or would it be worth going the full monty ? I'm new to DAWS as you know and bought Presonus Pro 12 months ago but prefer Bitwig but cash is limited ATM. I'm DEFINATELTY buying Dune 3 but your thoughts on the 16 track version of Bitwig ? If I buy the full that's me done for the year but if I buy the 16 track I can buy VST/Spounds as well but Dune 3 is pretty neat on it's own. Hi Stetph, thanks for writing. Personally I wouldn't go for anything but a full version. But that's me, I write full songs, orchestral scores etc. so I don't want to feel limited in any way. But as you are new to DAWs and still in the process of learning maybe Bitwig 16 track can be an alternative, as you also want to grad Dune 3 at the same time. BE aware that Bitwig now comes with a fullblown wavetable synth. AND you can also grab VITAL which is the best free waveable synth out there (very similar to Serum) and you have a wonderful combo! I would go for full Bitwig Studio and VITAL rather than Dune 3. Feel free to go your own path in this. If you plan to grab Bitwig Studio, make sure to use my affiliate code and link:

If you open up the browser (B) make sure you have the "Any Device Type" and "Any File Type" and then activate the Presets Tab. It's important that you have all device types available or they will appear "hidden" from sight.
      If Bitwig also says that the presets are already saved, I'm pretty sure they should be around somewhere.

      By opening it in an another track, while having any device and any file type selected, it says 0 devices under my name. @MattiasHolmgren  4 года назад

      Hi Beatz, regarding instruments. Bitwig does not come with as extensive package as, say, Logic Pro X. Bitwig Studio come with a ton of very nice sounding samples though which is appreciated. It's everything from deep electronic device samples to thick useable loops.
      IMO that's where the Bitwig focus seem to be, electronic music producers. So the package contain a ton of samples / presets suitable for electronic music production.
      But if you want orchestral / world / band patches there is not much. In that area Logic Pro X shines brilliantly. That said, when using Bitwig (and any other DAW) I personally use third party libraries for orchestral / world stuff.
      But for a brand new user with a slim budget I totally understand it would be useful to have a all-in-one package with orchestral / world sounds included too.
      Bitwig is a young DAW and haven't had time to mature it's native instrument package as much as the other DAWs on the market. That said it's still a very nice sample package included with Wig.

      It should definitely be simple and possible in Bitwig too. Instead of automation lane you could use modulators too, for an even more "semi-chaotic and organic sound". It's just about setting up the tracks and quick routing.
      It's exactly the same as in Ableton, except I don't see the need for a "dummy clip" to get access to automation. You don't need that in Bitwig. Well, only if you want to work in the clip launcher obviously. But if you work in the arrangement view you don't a clip to edit automation on a track.
      I just did a similar fx setup in a small Bitwig 4 project, doesn't take many seconds. 🌞

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 года назад

      Hi I don't think it works like that. What you can do: 1. Midi instrument tracks, add a Micro-pitch device (native Bitwig plugin) before any other VST instruments. The Micro-pitch device works with MPE-Ready VST plug-ins, as well as with Hardware via CV. 2. Samples residing in the arrangement view is just audio files (Audio Clips). So those you can re-pitch per single, or multiple audio clips at the same time. Bitwig have several time-stretch / re-pitch algorithms which you can use. And some of them sound really good.
      But overall, no, you can't use micro tuning as a one-stop solution to control stuff in your whole project.
      If all your melodic vst instruments are MPE compatible you can just insert a Micro Pitch and go with that. But
      if you are working with melodic audio clips at the same time, you need to take care of them separately.
      Hope the info helps. Cheers!
