Pen and Ink Beginners: PART 2 - How to Draw Fantastically by Scribbling with Ink

  • In this art tutorial on how to start drawing with pen and ink we look at drawing with three different types of pen and concentrating on Scribbling. The type of scribbling we use is not simply scribbling in a side to side motion, but in a figure 8 motion. This gives a more interesting appeal to the quality of line produced. I explain how to build up tone by building layers of scribbling and try to inspire people into being bold with the use of the pen, to produce different types of line and not to use rules lines. The video is aimed at absolute beginners and those wishing to develop their drawing skills.

I have just started a pen and ink drawing course…..but what I need to learn is when to scribble, when to crosshatch, when to use dots, etc. I hope to learn some tips from your other videos! I have appreciated the ones I have seen so far for your clear explanations. Thanks!

There are no 'rules' in art, you as the artist decide when to crosshatch etc. It's all part of the creative process. What you'll find is that sometimes it look 'right' sometimes it doesn't. Learn from that and follow your gut feeling.

You wouldn't use a blending stump with pen and ink

A bamboo stick pen gives a different line again but they are harder to carve.

True, experiment with different sticks they all produce different effects.
