When I heard this rendition, I started to cry like a baby remembering my late mother who was a great Coloratura Soprano and performed this very piece at several funerals when I was young. It brought instant memories of her to me. This is by far the most tender and lamenting version I have ever heard.
The best version I heard. No heroic vibrato, no hysteric ff, all is simple and very natural, tempo is also very pleasant. The choir part is also perfect, good balanced accents and dynamics.
I used to love the more bombastic versions of this and Tristes Aprets, but now that I'm old enough to have felt real sorrow, these subdued versions speak to me. They're more real, because when you're utterly broken, you can't muster bombast. You can hear the resignation in her voice.
@@malcolmdale I have, and it doesn't compare in the slightest. No subtlety whatsoever... A Baroque opera should not be sung in a Romantic style, and to say Norman sings in a 'Romantic style' is being charitable.
The west is not dying That is ridiculous! They said the same about the Dark and Middle ages!! Here we are... Rejoice. Remember Me, is the lament. Beauty is with us, as is modern civilisation! 😂🇮🇪🎉🎊❤️🎁🎂🙏😂 To this version of Dido's Lament... I say, Sublime!! Thank You to the up loader!! Much work I know.
I am speechless about the beauty of this song and version. There is deep stillnes within me listening this. That says it all. It is so unbelievably BEAUTIFUL. So well done by Simone Kermes!
Superb performance! Tottaly not frozen or not passionate! It's beauty is actually in this manner of performance! Tottaly out of the corrupted pseudo-romantic manner of super-expression, combined with large vibrato amplitude... I'm in love with this performance! As I am with many of the performances of the so called "scandalous" Simone Kermes!!
This song is a surrender, “Death is now a welcome guest” I love the sweet, decay as the accompanying melody descends... As ego, and body fall away. All that’s left is that high clear “Remember meeee”
yes, this interpretation is so far the very best I ever heard ! You don't realise it is ' philological' , as it is so fluent, natural, intense.. and does not need any horrible vibrato.. thanks a lot to ' gardenofmusician'
using P or even PP to sing high G just bring the sadness and desperation to the max level! This is definitely the best version. Not a common tiresome show off vibrato on high notes version, this one bring you a true Dido, you can feel everything with her. Absolutely stunning!
So wonderfully interpreted. This calmness and tenderness really touches me. And the choir fits in so well. The best interpretation I know. I can't get enough of that sound and triggering feeling
Jehudi Menuhin once called this the most beautiful aria ever written. Nobility obliges and thus presses a heavy burden on the shoulders of the performers. This performance with Simone Kermes is one of the two I know that masters this challenge with braviour and a not to surpassing drama. As a crowning, even and tremendous conclusion follows the final chorus "with drooping wings ye cupids come".
Live in Madrid (concert version of the opera) the 18th of november at the Teatro Real with the Kermès and Currentzis. Just superb! Discreet, poignant. The choir was astonishing. So far the best interpretation I've ever heard. Thank you for sharing.
It touches the grief and melancholy and longing that is lingering within you and then, with gentleness, turns it a little more bearable by bringing out the sweetness that is found in the gloomiest of our life’s episodes. Truthful is he who says that music is divine.
Exceptional beautiful interpretation by currentzis and amazing performance , choir and orchestra, with on top of it all this beautyfull performing simone kermes so calm and dedicated......
"When I am laid, am laid in earth, May my wrongs create No trouble, no trouble in thy breast; Remember me, remember me, but ah! forget my fate. Remember me, but ah! forget my fate."
merveilleux .On percoit qu' elle est" "déjà" avec les anges avec ce "no troube no trouble in my breast" parfaitement phrasé par cette magnifique soprano qu'est Simone Kermès Merci
After this performance there is no point listening of other performances...I am sorry for other great performers of this masterpeace, but it is simply so...
Crazy to think how America wasn't even a country yet and we have such exquisite music being written before that time. What a lovely song. Thank god for the Brits!
Saw this performed at Trinity Episcopal Church on Los Olas Boulevard in Fr. Lauderdale, FL-Seraphic Fire, period instruments, thank you Mr. Quigley. Unforgettable.
C'est juste grandiose, magique, plus qu'émouvant la voix de cette chanteuse...saisissant...j'écoute en boucle...c'est beau !!

Try Xenia Meijer - and of course Emma Kirkby
Condoglianze: mi dispiace
Please, don't cry, though, I'm more than sure your dearest mother's worth of crying 🌷
The best version I heard. No heroic vibrato, no hysteric ff, all is simple and very natural, tempo is also very pleasant. The choir part is also perfect, good balanced accents and dynamics.
I'm quite fond of Andreas Scholl's version, as all.
I totally agree, especially the ff
Have you heard the Jeff Buckley version? I can't find a really good recording but the bad recordings fit the song so well!
Pure to the period, and more powerful for it.
Excellent Interpretation. Just listen to the horrible version of J. Norman! Reminds you of a dying drama queen, pompous and exagerrated
Incomparably delicate version, a real lament that goes deep in the heart. By far the best version I have ever heard.
Επιτέλους και μία Ελληνίς !!!

Dearest Henry, the greatest composer England ever had.
I agree 🎶♥️
There is only one word you need to describe this, exquisite. Pain and beauty conjoined.
This is by far the greatest version of this beautiful lament.
You can't have heard Jessye Norman then.

@@Wilantonjakov I agree 100%
@@malcolmdale not really worth it.
Dido's lament is about the entire western world anno 2021. Very beautiful version, Purcell's music is incomparable, unique.

I love this version as it is not only beautiful but minimal which makes it even more emotional. Thank you
Why must this be so beautiful? It hurts and touches me with its beautiful melancholy.
Simone's voice is exquisite. So clear, and flows effortlessly. I envy her. I wish I could sing.
Na vele jaren nog steeds de meest aangrijpende uitvoering.
Keep coming back to this version, for me the best rendition
Drie uur geleden je reactie 🙂. Wat een schoonheid hè.
Frans van den Berg Heel mooi!

In the fog of the countryside today. I could not listen to something else❤
This is exquisitely beautiful.
The dynamics here are perfect. The composer would have loved the very careful breathing between strings and singer.
Now to get the CD.

Pride dies around 15 min after the body is dead.
Бесподобно! Так передать в песне: тоску, грусть, печаль и неизбежность разлуки!!! Просто рвет душу!
Precies !

sheer brilliance! Genius performance
A WONDERFUL VERSION . BOTH TEODOR CURRENTZIS AS WELL AS SIMONE KERMES ARE WONDERFUL, CREATING A SUPERB CLARITY .
PERFECTION....................no words......
Only the barque music can produce this this sweet refined, delicate sadness
using P or even PP to sing high G just bring the sadness and desperation to the max level! This is definitely the best version. Not a common tiresome show off vibrato on high notes version, this one bring you a true Dido, you can feel everything with her. Absolutely stunning!
This is the first version that really gave me chills, in the good way. Wonderful rendition!

Beautiful piece with beautiful voice..

Very interesting version of this masterpiece! Simone's voice is so beautiful and the choir is perfection; they are so in sync it's almost unreal!?! 😍

A wonderful discovery, both her and the conductor. Now my favourite version of a favourite piece.
höre ich gerade zum ersten Mal. Wie innig und schön! Und auch ungewöhnlich.
