I think you guys missed something with Philip. When he tells Naomi he saved her life he was talking about the Rosi. He knew his father planned on blowing it up and killing her, that's why he kidnapped her and brought her with him instead. I don't think Marco knows Philip knew and that is why he is pissed at Philip. The big belter guy probably told Philip about the "bomb" on the Rosi which made him take her with him to begin with. It's also why the big belter guy told Naomi she didn't know Philip or why he is doing what he did.
This is how Naomi knew to warn Holden about it, it clicked to her when Philip told her he saved her life.

As for Amos' relationship with Clarissa, in the books they contracted Holden to take her back to Earth because Anna knew if anyone else did it she had a good chance of "mysteriosly falling out an airlock" on the trip back (since she murdered an entire ship of people) and everyone in the systems knows Holden is too much of a boy scout to let that happen simply by reputation. During the trip back Amos befriends her as they were both doing mechanic work on the Roci which is where he started calling her Peaches.
In the show the closest you get is the scene from Ep 1 of season 4 where Clarissa is calling Amos from prison because she doesn't have anyone else to talk to. They are also explicitly NOT in any kind of sexual relationship, their connection is more about how they relate to each other since they both think they are monsters for the actions they've taken in their lives.

I can understand their anger, I mean the actual ring gate was created from the material of mostly belt citizens from Eros Station, that atrocity was committed by an Earth firm. Then you have the battle above Ganymede station that severely damaged the base and the "bread basket" of the outers. This is not including the decades of being treated like 3rd class citizens from Earth and Mars.

Thank you. People who have never been oppressed, discriminated against, and exploited do not have an inkling of what that is like. They expect marginalized people to "protest quietly" or take being mistreated and "just get over it." NOPE. Not condoning what Marcos did, but pretending Earth and Mars didn't mistreat the belters - as you pointed out - for generations?!? Whatever. People get tired of being oppressed. Oh, someone commented on the previous episode something like "just because people are oppressed doesn't make them good." Well, people who DO the oppressing sure as hell ain't good either.

    • @kirkdarling4120
      @kirkdarling4120 3 года назад +3

@@EyeOnSciFiPod Being oppressed doesn't make people good, but it does make them angry. We saw a touch of that when a ship of Ganymede refugees spaced their group of Inners. The arrogance of oppressors lies in thinking they will eternally have the upper hand. At no time did any Inner officials, including Avasarala and Gao, ever display contriteness for causing Belter deaths. There was no indication that Fred Johnson's efforts or Ashford's magnanimity had any effect on Inner oppressive policies toward Belters.
In terms of proportionality, the millions killed on Earth out of its billions (according to what we've seen so far in the show) is proportional to the hundred thousand killed on Eros, the thousands killed on Ganymede, and the Belt-wide starvation caused by the loss of Ganymede among the millions of Belters. It would certainly seem that way to Belters.

Amos, of all people, has no problem with people reinventing themselves, so letting his friend be someone other than the unloved second-banana daughter of an infamous quadrillionaire was something he'd have been on board with. I get the vibe from this episode that Philip is more of a hostage of sorts to his father, and he took his mother to keep her close so she would be safe from Marco. I could be way off, but that is all I could think of after watching his interactions with both parents. I think he is more like his mother, but is trapped with his father. The expanse makes us feel a certain way about a character, and then pulls the rug out from under us. We never know what to expect from any new character. I think the actor for Philip did an amazing job. It's like he has been psychologically abused his whole life and is just trying to survive in his small controlled environment. This episode made me realize how much I love Holden after coming so close to almost losing him.

Edit: In short, the tv show doesn't seem to do enough in regards to how Holden didn't seem worried about sabotage (that will certainly be addressed in the next episode). The book did better so I was surprised at how the tv show has him get on the Rocci so easily after such a poorly veiled threat by Sakai.
zach's comments can be ignored, his statements are wrong. Also, while his explanation on how the Rocci was sabotaged is correct, the source of that explanation is ultimately from the book. Oh, and you can also ignore my back and forth with him, it was long-winded even by my own standards, and ultimately unproductive.
As for Holden not realizing the Rocci was sabotaged, I was surprised they didn't do more to address that this episode. I forget exactly how they handled it in the book, but I remember them running through a ton of diagnostic checks that wouldn't normally be done. I believe Naomi's hack was just made well enough that it avoids detection with even thorough checks. There might have even been some sabotage done that was easier to locate, which threw off the trail from the hack.
As for why less attention was placed on this, well, it made good reading but I can't see how they would have made it enjoyable tv. And there were checks being run, otherwise they wouldn't have gotten Naomi's call before the Rocci blew up. So they'll probably mention in the next episode that they had been paying attention to who betrayed Fred, and that they were being careful due to that. They'll also mention that they didn't have a way to check for the specific code inserted onto the Rocci.
Still, as it is, it does feel like a plot hole right?

    • @runningray

My head canon is "Naomi is very smart. Her code is very good. The code is a passive code and just resides there as part of the operating system. Once the operating system starts up, you get a failure. You don't know there is a problem until there is a problem, hence why so many died on the Moon. There is an Easter Egg for this when Naomi talks about how good she is at breaking things on one of the earlier episodes. Thank God she didnt want to be a terrorist. As for Sakai, she knew it didnt matter where she was because once the Roci blows up, it would have Taycho station with it.

@@zachcreaghcoen2389 That's interesting, because in the tv show, season 5 episode 1 is the first time she even mentions that Marco is the father, and she doesn't mention anything about the hack.
So based off of what you said, it looks like you're just talking about the book. In the tv show, Naomi doesn't tell Holden about the hack.
So for those who have watched the tv show, but not read the book, when they see Holden on the ship preparing to start it up, it looks like a plot hole. Thinking about this further, I'm 100% certain this will be quickly addressed in the next episode. And that's fine, I guess. Not my favorite plot point, but whatever.
Anyway, back to your assertion. If you still think that this was actually addressed on the tv show itself, please, list the episode and at least a rough estimate of the time it was mentioned. I no longer have the faintest faith in your ability to do so, but prove me wrong if you can.

Dumping core only ejects the active fuel pellet that's used to feed the fusion reaction, without damage to the ship. Inside the engine/reactor, this reaction is contained in magnetic fields and all active reaction mass is just flushed into space when they "dump core". It apparently takes a while before the reactor can be rebooted, but they can, as long as they have more fuel pellets. You can see these pellets being loaded into the Roci's reactor and failing, in season 4, when the Ilus planet defenses block all nuclear reactions.

Well, I don't remember they gave explanation about Peaches in the books, either (in the show he mentions it in S04E01, in the books in book 5)... But, Peaches, Tiny, Morti (Murphy... ), Chrissie... it's just how Amos is... But you can tell how he feels about someone by nickname he gives... 😀
Btw, those nicknames are mostly only Amos allowed or tolerated (depends who is other person).
They probably surprised many about Fred and Sakai. Especially, in the books Fred lives (one more book), and Sakai (that's male character there, if I remember now correctly), and is not on Marco's side (or is? - but I think not).
You can see how Naomi is desperate to reach to Holden (because she already figured out about Roci when Filip told about "saving her" - he knows about code on Roci, that's what saving means - for her it's more about Holden than about her life) that she does what she never does - takes a weapon (knife) to kill Marco. And, of course, because she sees which kind of monster Marco is. And she does it willingly. That with Diogo was self defense situation, and she didn't use weapons.
About Holden not figuring out... well they done Sakai very smart, so they even couldn't crack her terminal. So, they probably checked everything on the Roci before engine start (offscreen), and didn't find anything suspicious. So, I think he thought about this for sure. If he had Naomi there, she would figure out something, because she is the smartest one in tech stuff.
Alex did some course correction before damping the core, and they accelerated pretty much, so they have decent but constant speed (just no artificial gravity inside the ship). They can reach very far. They just need assistance to stop. Their current course is at most close to asteroids acceleration Marco done. And if there is any big object on their way for gravity assisted acceleration, this would be even slingshooting.
Well "the juice" is what keeps their body (we had this established in S01E01).
I think they are not on an island. They are on the shore, for sure. Chesapeak Park - If my USA geography is right, this is Virginia. But with sea levels up, we saw in the season 1 some Canadian areas become islands. So, maybe. However, they showed us just coast and forest behind in the last episode.

She lucked out. Peaches sounds much better than Toast.

Amos probably has this nickname habit because of him having to turn from Timothy to Amos.

Holden not realizing that the Roci was sabotaged is an artifact of them changing the order of events from the books, in the book they didn't know Sakai was the traitor until they got Naomi's message

They were running a diagnostic before pushing off. There was nothing _structurally_ wrong with ship. Hell, it was probably in the best shape it's ever been: factory-pristine with some savvy enhancements in order to make the crew feel safe.
Naomi's code was designed to elude diagnostics, ergo her need to warn them.

It's a sci-fi trope that anytime a crew does a "round the horn" station readiness check pre-launch (Weapons... check! Navigation... check! Life Support... check! Sensors... check! Etc etc...), that ship is doomed. Watching Roci run her pre-flight check on the drive subsystems one item at a time was a nod to that tradition.
