I assume you needed to defend because Ruby would have attacked first and therefore landed a critical attack.
I don't like the way you can only see their health while they're taking damage.
This game looks fun and adorable whenever it comes to switch I will be getting it but for the breeding Mechanics I say go with something similar to the dragon warrior monsters series a risk & reward type of thing you lose the 2 blobs used for breeding but get an offspring that is stronger
