  • Olympus M.Zuiko 150-400mm F4.5 PRO - Better With The EM1-X or EM1-iii || Discussion Time
    Olympus have just announced a new lens! The Olympus M.Zuiko 150-400mm F4.5 PRO which is any wildlife photographer dream lens!
    In todays video I talk about why I went for the Olympus EM1-iii over the EM1-X and I talk about which camera I think is best suited for Olympus's new telephoto lens (M.Zuiko 150-400mm F4.5 PRO).
    This video has been made to create discussion so please comment your thought below. Will you be buying the new 150-400mm F4.5 lens from Olympus? If so which body will you be buying/do you have, the em1-iii or the em1-x?... lets discuss!
    As stated in the video I will do my best to get hold of Olympus M.Zuiko 150-400mm F4.5 PRO and trail it out in the field with the EM1-iii on either the kingfisher or birds of prey. If you're interested in that or more content like this then don't forget to subscribe.

    I got rid of all my Canon gear, including 7D MKII, and went over to Olympus. I now have the E-M1X, which is the best camera I have ever owned. I also have the 12-40 f2.8, 40-150 f2.8 and 300mm f4 Pro lenses. All superb kit. Now looking forward to updating with the bird tracking for the E-m1X and lottery win permitting, getting the new 150-400 f4.5 zoom one day! I have never enjoyed my photography as much or taken such sharp images as I now do with Olympus gear!

    I’m on the edge at present, I have the original 7D with a 16-35/4, 70-200/2.8ii, 100-400 Mk1 and a 500/4. I also have many Sigma lens inc 10-20, 100 macro and a 300/2.8.
    I’ve been waiting forever for the 7D3 ( now probably to be the R7 ) but I am contemplating another brand ( also own a Fuji XP1 and an XT1 ) inc Sony Fuji Olympus.
    After my focus being in buying lens I will now need an adapter to workwith them, and maybe they won’t play well with an R body ( I may try an R6 ) and adaptor, then I’ll have to sell up and start from scratch again.
    Weight is a huge issue for me these days, I have back issues and am over 50 so................... Andy Rouse has been doing amazing things with his Oly system 👍

    I received my 150-400 today 😬 waited 6 months ! I am using it on the em1 Mark iii, I didn't want the X due to the size and I wanted starry sky af. Most people I know using the X still use C-AF for birds in flight rather than the tracking af. I came from a Sony full frame and the Olympus is much nicer to use. Looked at going back to a full frame Canon DSLR but the size put me off and even a used 500mm f/4 cost more than the Olympus 150-400.

    For this lens and for optimised focus features for wildlife and BIF in particular it has to be the EM1X. The firmware upgrade does not add the focus improvements to the EM1-iii. As an EM1-iii owner I'm a bit disappointed to see that, but as I'm not a fan of the EM1X (too large for me; and I have tried one) I'll have to live with it. Other Olympus users on this platform have speculated that because the EM1X has a dedicated processor for autofocus it has the power to run the algorithms needed, whereas the processor in the EM1-iii would struggle at best and fail completely at worst with the BIF function.

  • @Jay19876
    @Jay19876 3 года назад +3

    I hope OM Digital Solutions takes a slightly different approach on differentiating their "Olympus" cameras. I truly believe the EM1 mark iii is capable of running the AI bird autofocus tracking at least to a certain extent, even with it's single 8 core processor since it has the brand new Truepic IX configuration. Yes, the EM1-X has two 8 core Truepic Viii processor configurations in it but apparently they are substantially slower than the new Truepic IX processor. Many of the features included with the EM1-X such as Live ND and hand help high-res mode were said to be impossible on cameras like the EM1 mark ii or the EM5 mark iii, since they only have a single Truepic Viii processor in them. Interestingly, the EM1 mark iii handles these features just as effectively as the EM1-X does which leads me to believe there is enough processing power available to run the intelligent subject tracking modes as well, but they would need to optimize the software to run it on the EM1 mark iii's fewer but faster processing cores.
    Furthermore, I find it strange that Olympus did not update the EM1-X with the Stary-Sky AF mode or the new and improved eye and face tracking mode which the EM1 mark iii has for stills! My speculation is that they did this to encourage some Olympus owners to buy both the EM1 X and EM1 Mark iii. That may be a good solution to increase camera sales on the short term, however, if they were to focus on maximizing each of their cameras capabilities, they would likely attract more users to their platform in the long run, regardless of cannibalizing camera sales within their lineup (sell more cameras and lenses through time).
    Lets keep our fingers crossed and hope OM Digital Solutions decides to unlock the true capability of all cameras they sell!

      The thing with the m1x, is the specific extra cpu. Exactly for the ai recognition and tracking.
      Mk3 has faster cpu, but still only 1 cpu. It doesn't have the tracking recognition that m1x has.

    I am an M43 user since 2010 but jumped with Olympus fully only this March with E-M1 III even though I knew E-M1X was coming out with Bird Detection. I could get the E-M1X but I went with E-M1 III because I needed something nimble for landscape photography, being smaller and lighter. My thought process was that E-M1X will get cheaper with time and I have yet to know the effectiveness of the Bird AI AF. Now that I have seen how good it is I absolutely want it and will get it with 150-400mm Pro, hopefully, end of next year. I don't mind carrying 2 cameras with me because that would be actually ideal, E-M1 III with 12-100 Pro for landscape or with 40-150mm Pro for big wildlife (like deer) or low light and the E-M1X with the 150-400mm Pro (to be honest I think that camera will be permanently stuck with that lens from now on :P ).
    PS. The reason why you don't see the 150-400 Pro for lending from Olympus is, as an official seller in the UK told me, there are only 7 lenses were supplied by Olympus for Pre-order nationwide. I think the production of this lens is going to be very slow and low quantity, potentially to be back-ordered for the whole of 2021. (But if one waits long enough it's going to be fixed and lower-priced down the line).

  • @theosolberg
    @theosolberg 3 года назад +4

    I'm not a wildlife photographer, still I have pre-ordered the lens as I can see it a great lens for shooting music festivals and concerts (perhaps also kind of "wildlife"? ;) ) which I do mainly. At least used to, until early 2020. I intend to use it with the E-M1 III, I don't have an E-M1X. The E-M1 III has great face and eye recognition, so for me the combination of this body with the new lens should be great. For you as a wildlife photographer the E-M1X will have an advantage with the new firmware. Question for you is, how crucial is that new firmware for you?

    • @BenFitzcosta
      @BenFitzcosta  3 года назад +1

      I am happy for you that you have got this lens on pre-order. I really do think this will be the perfect lens for any wildlife photographer and due to how vesitle it is you will hardly ever need to use any other lens! I don't think the new firmware is that cruicial if im am honest and I dont really have any issues tracking birds in flight myself so I dont think I need the bird AF. Thanks for watching. All the best, Ben.

I've been shooting this camera with the 300 f/4 since Mar 2020 and switched to the Cluster Area in my C1 Mode which I also made accessible with the middle finger button right hand - can't do that with my E-M1 Mk II .......... :-)

    Hi Ben: First time I have found your channel and watched an episode. I am in a very similar situation as you. I owned the EM1-ii and tried the EM1X on a bird photography tour, as i was interested in the HH Hi Res mode. It seemed too bulky and heavy (granted I was still healing from broken ribs in a bike accident 6 months earlier) to me, and I eventually upgraded to the EM1-iii, like you. I mostly do bird photography with the 300 mm F4 lens, but am interested in the 150-400 mm (who isn’t?). Very disappointed to find the upcoming firmware update for bird tracking AF only for the M1X 😞. I could trade in my EM1-ii I keep as back up to get M1x, as M1X is $1000 discount now ( I don’t think Olympus sold very many and trying to get rid of surplus). I am also looking at Canon R5 + 100-500 mm Canon lens, as the combo is lighter than the Olympus set-up and everyone is raving about the bird eye AF on the R5. I don’t think the 100-500 mm Canon will be quite as good as the Olympus 150-400, especially since it will need a teleconverter to get decent reach, but the R5 45 MP sensor and its video capabilities are strong arguments for trying a different format. I have only ever shot Olympus, and it seems many people on your channel have switched from FF -> micro 4/3 🧐. I will likely wait until the new lens and the firmware are out and see what people are saying. However, if the firmware update applied to the EM1- iii, it would be a “no-brainer” to go ahead with the Oly 150-400 mm for me and stay with a system I already know.

    Hi Ben,
    I would invest in an electrically connected Canon EF to M4/3 adaptor and try your excellent Canon 100-400mm lens on the em1-iii. All of my Canon brand lenses work well including auto focus on my em10 mk3 using a viltrox adaptor that I bought for £108. In fact the only lens I have that needs to have my em10 set up to work as though it is without a lens is a Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 I think it's just an issue with my particular lens though as a Tamron 75-300mm lens works fine with it.
    The Olympus 150-400mm is only a few grams lighter than the Sigma 150-600mm. The Sigma costs a tenth of the Olympus 150-400mm and has more reach, will hopefully work on both your systems and at the longer end actually has a better F stop than the 150-400 with a 1.4x teleconverter.

    • @malcolmwright6948
      @malcolmwright6948 3 года назад

      The 7d Mk2 weighs 910g the EM1X weighs 997g. The Sigma 150-600mm contemporary weighs 1,930g the Olympus 150-400mm weighs 1,875g. So your 7D mk2 with the Sigma would be 2,840g and the EM1X with the 150-400 would be 2,872g so actually weighs more. I'm thinking of getting the Sigma lens and trying it out on my EM10 mk3.

      I think the 300f4 is a great lens as I have had experiance using that lens and I know it performs really well. I was in the opposite situation to you. I bought an EM1x when it first came out and since then the new price has gone down and down and then the EM1 mkii got the firmware upgrade that brought it up to almost EM1x spec in a smaller, lighter and cheaper package. I was not impressed. Then the mkiii came out and it had much improved human face and eye detection over the EM1x and still has. So I was not a happy bunny and nearly sold the camera to buy a mkiii . Finally, the Em1x is now going to get the bird eye Af which will utilise the twin processors of the EM1x so at last there is a reason to keep the EM1x for me.
    I recently hired a Canon R5 and 100-500 lens and I was very impressed with the bird Af on that camera. It would revolutionaise the way I shoot. I am just hoping the EM1x system can compete with it for speed and accuracy. The Canon package is also actually lighter than the EM1x plus a 300mm f4.
    For people who just want more focal length than the 300mm f4 there is the 100-400 at about £1000 that will give you 800mm equivalent focal length. The 150-400 f4.5 with inbuilt tele is in another league to the 100-400. Made of magnesium and carbon fiber, very high quality lens elements, the inbuilt converter and an equivalent range of 1000mm before adding external converters. It is expensive but not when compared to a Canon 200-400 with inbuilt converter £10,919 .
