  • There isn't much left of the former town of Bowgada and it is considered to be a ghost town, however the Shire of Perenjori's website says there are 40 people living there, we didn't see anyone. We think this must mean on the surrounding farms because there isn't any infrastructure to support even a population of 1 let alone 40. There's very little evidence of a town, other than remains of a house, shed and some footings.
We were there in August, mid wildflower season, and there were some wildflowers on display, most notably everlastings and some grevillea bushes. It was interesting to see, as the afternoon approached dusk, small insects started to settle on the flowers as if bedding down for the night.
Bowgada Town was originally named Chubble when the town was gazetted in 1913, however by 1914 it was changed to Bowgada after the Bowgada Wattle found in the area. Although Bowgada is the Aboriginal name for an Acacia bush found in the area, we couldn't confirm if it is a Badimia word.
Bowgada is just off the Mullewa-Wubin Road about half way between Perenjori and Morawa. Bowgada was a rail siding and to the north of the railway line is the Bowgada Nature Reserve. Research indicates the reserve was created in 1969 and is within the boundaries of the former Bowgada townsite.
In 1910, Mr Jim Campbell and son Harry settled the area and after roads were cleared more people came the area. A small school was built and in 1924 a general store and post office was opened by Mr Jim Chomley and the population had exploded to 80. The store was later known as Maurice's store and in 1932 unfortunately burnt down. As happens with a lot of these small rural towns, people start to leave, government closes services and soon the towns don't exist. In the case of Bowgada, the school was closed in Oct 1941, the post office closed in 1974 and perhaps the final nail in the coffin was when the stock yards were dismantled in 1975.
Bowgada is on the traditional lands of the Badimia People in the Midwest Region of Western Australia.
