You piqued my interest, and I looked up the cowbone in sugar. TIL Apparently it just goes through bone char filters(like a water filter) and most companies aren't using the method anymore. But the sugar itself has no bone in it, however, if you care, it technically touched bone at some point. I'd also mention that there is not a 0% chance that the harvesters, loaders, and drivers didn't wear leather gloves during the process of making your sugar(nearly same as filtering through bone char). Yeah, I also call BS on this, since they claim it's to "whiten", but the process of extracting and refining sugar will not only differ by source, but you only need to "strain away" the colourants. I think it's a case of one manufacturer being used to demonize the rest of the industry. I've caught militant vegans in lies before and the refused to acknowledge that they lied. If anywhere isn't using bone char to refine sugar it's probably the US and Europe. Some other countries still use it to filter their water. I would assume a sugar company that doesn't use bone char would advertise that fact because it's "value added". It's still kosher though.
Just did a quick Google search: cow bone is used to bleach a lot of sugarcane-based sugars and the molasses used for brown sugar. Because of this, “strict” vegans consider sugar on the whole to be not vegan. Notably, granulated sugar from sugar beets usually does not use cow bone, and is therefore vegan.
