I was like this too. I mean, I don’t just speak English. I already speak two languages, which are Bulgarian and Spanish, but I’ve kinda known them since I was a baby as they’re my parents languages so it didn’t really feel like I “learnt” them yk?? But I decided to actually learn a new language last year, which is mandarin. For a few months of learning the language, I felt like I wasn’t making any progress, so I started watching movies and listening to music in the language. If I happened to watch a movie or show in English, I’d put the captions in mandarin, and doing that for a month made me gain so much more progress than what I was doing before. This is what I really recommend doing.

If I interlace German words into a mostly English poem, I have to stop and think... since the structure and metaphoric meanings may be lost in the translation. Everyone was blown away by your linguistic skills.:) Amazing! I think the Chinese sign you held in the beginning of the video reads from right to left, thus 五福临门 or "five happiness arrive at the door." When you lived in China, you might have seen this kind of signs written this way on public gates/walls-an ancient way. But once the writing becomes an article, it would go from top to bottom and right to left. Only modern Chinese reads from left to right. Great video!

That is so quick, a few phrases and kind words or compliments or even a joke here and there, and all of a sudden you are in a completely different position to their souls. Vietnamese will definitely be interesting to learn in the future. A lot of ppl don't know that there's a huge borrowing of Chinese vocabulary in the language. Lots of traditions are also similar such as giving out red envelopes on Lunar New Year and eating mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival.

As a fellow Michigander I want to convey to you how much I appreciate your videos, I live vicariously through you, and also work on my social anxiety through your videos by imagining myself in the same scenarios you put yourself in. It also helps with my social anxiety to see you put yourself out there and nothing bad happens. so it helps me build up my courage. So thank you for your videos! I also love languages and have learned some in high school, and small amount through Anime, K--dramas , J-dramas, and their T.V. shows that I can find on RUclips ( like love letter). My husband and I had planned years ago to visit Japan, but I got sick and started to have seizures, then after taking meds and them helping me I found out I was pregnant. After having our son I stopped having seizures and am slowly getting back to health, So maybe we will be able to visit Japan in the future. With all that said, What would you recommend for us to do in Japan, or really any of Asia, with a child. I worry our son won't find culture as interesting as we do. Thank you again! I Will see you in your next video!

Hi just want to point out that it's 五福臨門, and not the other way around. Traditional Chinese is written from right to left, so in the past, even horizontal writing was in this right to left form, and only in recent decades it's getting more common to see from left to right, in horizontal writing (and also, traditional Chinese writing was top to bottom vertically, then right to left). Since that banner was for Chinese New Year, it was written in the old style way (right to left).
And for the roast duck, my guess is that it is a Cantonese style roast duck, and not a Peking (roast) duck, based on the shop and the Cantonese lady there.
I wish you would try the Cantonese language one day, but of course Vietnamese is also very cool. (9 tones vs 6 tones.)
Sugoi on your videos! Keep it up! And thanks!
    Cheers,
    From Vancouver, Canada
