I would stand behind the curtain when in Ice Capades, dressed in the next production number costume and watch Dorothy skate. Especially when I'd get home sick. She would put a smile on my face and remind me why we where there. Consistent perfection every show! A figure skater! Pure beauty. She'd light up that ice!
LOL! But all joking aside, Dorothy's moves like the Hamill Camel were considered hair-raising at the time, even though they seem laughably easy now. But skating has lost so much grace and artistry in favour of huge jumps . . . I miss those days. . .
Quentin 33 No she doesn’t do her camel in an exhibition that’s just beautiful artistry. Camels are primarily found in competition skates because it’s a required element. Go to her 1976 U. S. Championships performance. At the 4:10 mark she goes into the camel, and then takes it directly into a sit spin. That’s a Hamill Camel. Dick Button is the commentator and he talks you through her whole performance. Modern skating has lost so much of the emphasis on beauty and lyrical movement. Triples, how high and powerful can they get has taken over. These were the days. Simpler but so beautiful.
60s teen a Hamill Camel is Dorothy’s trade mark and has nothing to do with a sit spin. The Hamill camel is when the body which normally faces the ice with the leg extended behind in the spin is opened up with the body hips and leg on its side.
Dorothy is beautiful! Perfect performance!

They are missed because the art of figure skating is lost. And sadiy; so is the beauty and simplicity.
What exactly is the Camel Spin or Hamill Camel? Does she do it here?
