Exploring Oregon's Desert | Hiking and Camping Trip to Escape the Rain

  • I’m traveling to the Bend area to escape the spring rains and soak up some Oregon desert sun. We will be hiking and camping around some iconic spots and scenic destinations. We will learn about native plants, geology and the mountain weather patterns that make travel and road trips in the Pacific Northwest so naturally beautiful, diverse, and exciting. We are always learning about nature while road tripping in the van, and this adventure is no exception. Oregon is truly a natural wonderland of forests, pines, rivers and campsites for swimming and adventuring all day in the great outdoors.

    The quick change in rainfall totals in Oregon is amazing and its not just East of the Cascades, in Southern Oregon the Drain area at the North end of the Umpqua Basin gets around 46-48 inches per year but 30-35 minutes South around Roseburg its 30-31 inches per year and completely different vegetation in the valleys.

    I used to head to eastern Oregon from Tacoma to get a more "desert" vibe. The Painted Hills unit of John Day Fossil Beds is outstanding. Another secluded but remote gem is the Alvord Desert (a dry lake bed) southeast of Burns. And just past Klamath Falls in northern California is Lava Beds National Monument, which has amazing juniper smells, lava formations and even caves to explore (if that is of any appeal)
    I'm now back in Arizona so I can get my desert vibes year round.

    FWIW, the weird weather pattern was forcing rain up from the storm track hitting Cali. We were further out in the Great Basin watching it snow from the comfort of a tub at a hot spring. Usually the showers blow through and it's nice again in 20 minutes but the beginning of May saw incessant rain and wind followed by snow down to the valley floors -- amazing! I was glad we had brought my buddy's big Dodge AND that we had stayed at the springs. Our intended destination was further east and the roads are clay -- absolutely impassable when wet.

    • @kaylanrosa
      @kaylanrosa  Год назад +1

      The weather patterns have definitely been wacky lately! Oregon/Cali had really late rains and snow, followed by crazy heat waves that shouldn’t be here for another month! Although a Hot Spring sounds like a wonderful way to enjoy that. I’ve definitely missed them since coming back from the East Coast and haven’t gotten a chance to get in one since.

    7:15 Agreed, camping does make everything better. I hit the road last summer in search of serenity after an awful family drama. I traveled up and down the Eastern Seaboard, Georgia to Vermont. Saw most of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Now I'd love to travel out West, but I have to wait for my finances to allow it. (One thing I discovered is that camping isn't as cheap as one imagines it to be.) In Australia we do not call that a Desert it has rivers rainfall and absolutely where you went no Sand Dunes though surprisingly there are sand Dunes and quite a few in Michigan and other states bordering the great lakes not just in California and points toward Mexico.
    We have the Great Sandy desert, The Simpson desert, Tanami desert, Gibson desert,Victorian desert, Little Sandy desert, Strzeleski desert, Sturt desert,Pedrika desert and finally the Tirari desert and ranging in size from 348,750 square Kilometers to 1250 square kilometers.
    That is just conventional terrain in a rain shadow behind a mountain range it may be arid but it is not really a desert like we have or such as the Sahara in Northern Africa.

    • @kaylanrosa
      @kaylanrosa  Год назад +1

      There are sand dunes in plenty of places not considered desert! Also many deserts can have riparian areas like the ones in this video. The majority of the land here is dry and characterized by very little rainfall :) I’m from the Arizona Sonoran desert and it’s got lots of sand, rocks and cactus but even a few regions like this along seasonal creeks/rivers. They come in so many different shapes and sizes! Can’t wait to see Australian desert though :)

    • @stephencox4224
      @stephencox4224 Год назад +1

      @@kaylanrosa THis is one about crossing the Simpson Desert in Australia on a track known as the Madison line, Many of our deserts have famous tracks from the early explorers who often used Camels as transport
      Australia in the very early days imported camels and Afghans who rode them as sort of packhorses in Desert exploring in the early days.
      A legacy of that is we export many of our wild camels to the Middle east as they are highly prized purebreds not available easily over there.
      We also export Dates because once again we have premuim date palms the Arabs prize very highly as they are also pure unaltered stock bought here hundeds of years ago and planted in different Deset Oasis for food by the Afhgans and they really suit our climate.
      So as you will see what we call Desert in Australia is vastly different from Arid semi desert lands caused predominately by Rain Shadow effects in many places aropund the world.
      Our open spaces are vast beyond belief and for instance the Highway from South Australia to Western Australia across the Nullabor plain on the Eyre Highway takes about four or five days with almost no directional change it is pretty much dead straight.
      Nullabor is Latin for Treeless plain and it is about 750 Km wide and takes as noted the best part of a week to travel across because it is almost 1700 Kilometres long on the Road trip.
      Hoping I did not come across too harsh in not considering that terrain a desert as we know it and the linked Video might explain how we view Deserts differently then others.
